My husband Andrew Erickson passed away unexpectedly, and I discovered I was pregnant. On the day I was in the hospital waiting to give birth, a strange woman suddenly burst into my room, accusing me of being the obstetrics department director’s mistress. “You’re the slut who seduced my husband, aren’t you? You even got pregnant!” The onlooking patients began whispering among themselves. “No wonder Mr. Erickson visits her room every day and personally brings her food. They’ve been dating!” “Shame on her! She deserves to be scolded by Mr. Erickson’s wife!” I thought to myself, “Are they referring to Scott Erickson, the obstetrics director? He’s Andrew’s brother, he’s family…” ***** “Ma’am, please calm down! She’s still on an IV…” the nurse hurriedly stepped forward, trying to stop the well-dressed woman. Before I could react, the woman had already yanked the needle out of the back of my hand. Blood immediately gushed from the puncture site, and the intense pain made me gasp. Ivy Nichols’s voice was piercingly shrill. “So what? Does being on an IV give her the right to seduce my husband?” I was completely stunned, not understanding why anyone would think I was having an affair while pregnant. Besides, what man wouldn’t mind that I was already this far along in my pregnancy? So I frowned and said, “I’m almost nine months pregnant. Look at my belly. How could I possibly be involved with your husband?” Seeing this, someone chimed in, “Are you sure you haven’t made a mistake? Pregnant women don’t have it easy.” Ivy spat viciously and cursed, “Yuck! It’s definitely this room, I couldn’t possibly be wrong! My husband is the obstetrics director, he barely comes home anymore, and every time I come looking for him, he’s here. If you two aren’t secretly dating, what are you doing here?” Hearing this, I finally realized she was Scott’s girlfriend. Just as I was about to explain, a middle-aged Chinese woman suddenly rushed over and slapped me hard across the face. “You slut! You dare seduce someone else’s husband while pregnant? Aren’t you afraid of karma?” Since becoming pregnant, I’ve been more sensitive to pain. After the woman slapped me, half my face went numb. “If you continue like this, I’m calling the police!” the nurse stood in front of me nervously. Ivy ignored her completely and continued her aggressive accusations, “My husband never sets foot in the kitchen at home, but he’s been cooking for you every day!” Then, she pulled out her phone and played a recording for everyone to hear. “Taking care of you is the most important thing to me. If anything happened to you, I would never forgive myself.” Those were words Scott had said to me over the phone. At Andrew’s funeral, Scott had sworn he would take care of me and our child in Andrew’s place. Yet now, I was being slapped by his girlfriend. Furious, I gritted my teeth and said, “Why can’t he care about me? It’s his duty!” I was still part of the Erickson family. Even though my husband died young, the child I was carrying might be the Erickson family’s heir. Scott’s parents had specifically instructed him to take care of me at the hospital, and the food was sent by his mother. However, as soon as I finished speaking, the bystanders erupted in commotion. “Wow, I’ve never seen a woman so proud of being a mistress!” “I thought this girl seemed kind, but I never expected her to be so shameless. We really can’t judge a book by its cover!” “Let’s see how long this mistress can keep acting so arrogant!” Ivy suddenly turned and threw herself into her mother Rosanna’s arms, her voice trembling, “Mom, I can’t live like this anymore! A mistress is humiliating me like this.” Rosanna glared at me fiercely and said, “My daughter is about to get married, but you’re destroying their relationship. Don’t you feel guilty?” I was completely speechless with these two women; they wouldn’t listen to anything I said. Scott had mentioned before that because Andrew had died unexpectedly, Scott’s parents insisted that Ivy must get pregnant before marrying Scott. They needed to have at least one child. But Ivy had failed several IVF attempts. Afterward, she became extremely sensitive and suspicious about everything. Today, I finally witnessed just how crazy she could be. “Scott and I are not dating! If you don’t believe me, go ask him instead of causing trouble here. This baby is important to our family!” Ivy instantly became furious and lunged at me, yanking me off the hospital bed. “Is the baby you’re carrying Scott’s? How dare you do this?” Her screams nearly pierced my eardrums. My face turned pale as I struggled to shout, “No! It’s not his!” However, Ivy had completely lost her mind. She straddled me, one hand grabbing my hair while the other slapped me repeatedly across the face. Her entire body was pressing down on my belly, and an unprecedented pain shot through my lower body. “She’s bleeding! Is she going into labor?” someone exclaimed. I looked around in terror, trembling as I begged the people around me for help. “Please help me! My baby is coming!”
Seeing this, the nurse hurriedly pressed the call button, but Rosanna stopped her immediately. Ivy sneered, “You slut! I’ve given birth before, so don’t put on this act to fool people!” The onlookers immediately broke into murmurs of disapproval. Someone was so angry they picked up a basin of water from the floor and threw it at me. The ice-cold water soaked through my thin hospital gown, making me shiver uncontrollably. “Get out of here. I don’t want to stay in the same room with such a filthy woman.” This comment seemed to embolden both Ivy and Rosanna. Ivy grabbed my hair and started dragging me toward the door. I struggled desperately, using both hands to protect my belly, pleading, “This baby has nothing to do with Scott. Please leave me alone! I’m begging you.” But Ivy snarled through gritted teeth, “You’re trying to complain to my husband, aren’t you?” “Now you’re begging? It’s too late! Today, you won’t be giving birth to this bastard child!” I retorted, “You’re not even a member of the Erickson family. What right do you have to harass me?” As soon as I said this, the surrounding patients and visitors began whispering among themselves. “She’s right. I’ve never seen Mr. Erickson wear a wedding ring.” “If they’re married, why have I never seen him with her at the hospital?” The murmurs made Ivy’s face flush red with anger. She could only maintain her composure by saying, “We just haven’t had the wedding ceremony yet. Our parents have already met!” After Ivy finished speaking, Rosanna immediately nodded in agreement. Seeing that everyone still looked doubtful, Ivy frantically pulled out her phone and found intimate photos of her and Scott, including several nude pictures, which she displayed one by one in front of everyone. Ivy declared shamelessly, “Open your eyes and look carefully! Do you still dare to doubt my relationship with my husband?” By now, Ivy seemed to have completely lost control. Rosanna, concerned for her, rushed forward and slapped me hard across the face several times. Seeing the convincing evidence, some onlookers became indignant and surged forward to punch and kick me. Many people tore at my clothes and limbs, so I desperately curled up to protect my belly, looking toward the nurse in terror, begging for help. But the only nurse willing to help me was blocked by the angry crowd. They helped Rosanna drag me outside, laughing dismissively. “In the past, sluts like you would have been publicly punished! Now we’re just throwing you out. What are you afraid of?” Amid the jeering crowd, Ivy walked over arrogantly and kicked me hard in the stomach. Excruciating pain instantly swept through my entire body, and I felt warm blood flowing between my legs. Seeing the blood staining the floor, I desperately shouted at the obstetrician watching from the doorway, “If my baby and I die here today, your hospital won’t be able to avoid responsibility!” The doctor suddenly looked panicked. After all, news of similar medical disputes was all too common. After hesitating for a moment, he finally intervened, “Everyone, calm down! How about I call the director first? Anyway, we’ve already confirmed once.” Upon hearing that he could contact Scott, the triumphant Ivy immediately agreed without hesitation. She dug her sharp nails into my chin and sneered, “Call him now! Let this slut see with her own eyes who my husband truly loves!”
Ivy clutched her phone, repeatedly dialing several times, but Scott never answered. The atmosphere in the hospital room instantly became awkward. Seeing Ivy’s forced smile, Rosanna quickly consoled her: “He must still be in surgery. You should wait a bit longer—he’ll definitely call back!” While everyone’s attention was on the phone, I quickly shot a glance at the nurse. She understood immediately, nodding slightly before slipping out through the doorway. I had just secretly sighed in relief when Ivy keenly caught my expression. She suddenly grabbed my throat in fury, shouting, “You were smirking just now, weren’t you?” Ivy’s eyes were filled with rage. Then, she glanced at the kettle of boiling water steaming on the bedside table. As I watched her pick up the scalding kettle and approach me step by step, my eyes filled with terror. “Ivy, have you lost your mind? If you dare touch me, the Erickson family will never let you get away with it!” Among the onlooking patients, someone who couldn’t bear to see me bullied said, “Isn’t she going too far?” Rosanna immediately shouted back, “Did this woman consider my daughter when she destroyed her family?” Her tearful performance quickly won everyone’s sympathy, and someone consoled her, “You’re doing nothing wrong!” “Yeah, what’s wrong with teaching the mistress a lesson? We support you!” They were blinded by rage, helping Rosanna pin down my limbs tightly to prevent my escape. I was delivered to Ivy’s side like a lamb to slaughter. I thought she would splash the boiling water on my face. However, I never expected her to pour it directly between my legs. Hearing my piercing screams, Ivy laughed triumphantly. “You deserve this. After you’re injured, no man will want to sleep with you.” My lower body was covered in blood. Just as I worried about my baby’s safety, a tearing pain suddenly shot through my pubic bone. The pain, surprisingly, filled me with both shock and joy. Realizing my child was still alive, I took advantage of their distraction and broke free with astonishing strength. However, after running just a few steps, I received a vicious kick to the back of my knee. With a sharp crack, I collapsed heavily to the floor. Ivy grabbed my long hair and dragged me back, instantly leaving a horrifying trail of blood on the floor. I cried out in agony, not just from my injured knee, but because I felt something sliding out from between my legs. A patient suddenly exclaimed, “She’s giving birth! I can see the baby’s head!” Ivy and Rosanna instantly became even more furious. When Ivy crouched down to look between my legs, her eyes filled with jealousy. Then, she turned to Rosanna and said, “Once her baby is born, we won’t be able to handle this. We absolutely cannot let her deliver this child!” Ignoring the excruciating pain, I desperately grabbed Ivy’s pant leg, begging, “Please. The baby is innocent.” Ivy violently covered my mouth, hissing in my ear, “You and your bastard child are not innocent. You both deserve to die!” In my desperate struggle, I saw Rosanna reach between my legs. She precisely pressed on my baby’s fragile head. Before the infant could cry, she cruelly shoved it back into the birth canal. She was utterly merciless. My already severely torn wounds became a bloody mess under her brutal actions. I could clearly feel the baby, who had been fighting to come out, gradually stop struggling. Until finally, my belly became completely still. I couldn’t control the heart-wrenching cry that escaped me. However, at that moment, a familiar voice came from outside as the nurse burst in with the Erickson family. Scott, still in his surgical scrubs, saw the scene and his eyes widened with fury. “STOP!” When Cecilia Moore first married into the Erickson family, Scott was just a high school freshman. He attended a prestigious high school, was introverted, studied diligently all day, and had almost no friends in his class. His classmates didn’t know about his family background; they just thought he was weird and intentionally isolated him, with some occasionally going out of their way to give him trouble. Scott became increasingly withdrawn throughout high school, with books becoming his only refuge. During that time, he barely spoke and would retreat to his room as soon as school ended. Scott’s parents were at a loss with him, and Andrew was too busy with company matters to pay him any attention. It was during that summer vacation when Cecilia moved into the Erickson home. She had a gentle personality but wasn’t particularly talkative. With this boy who was seven or eight years younger than her, she didn’t know how to interact with him at first. Scott’s parents had always advocated for a relaxed approach to education and didn’t interfere much in his life, even taking the opportunity during summer vacation to travel abroad. During the day, the spacious mansion was left with only Cecilia, who didn’t have to work, and Scott, who stayed cooped up in his room. Cecilia could only do her best to take care of Scott, like calling him for breakfast or bringing him some game cartridges. Sometimes, she would also ask with concern if he was happy at school. Although her concern was somewhat awkward, Scott could feel that this newcomer was very kind. After that, they lived together peacefully for a while. One day, Scott, who didn’t have to go to cram school, suddenly approached Cecilia and asked her to go out with him. “I want to go to a bookstore to buy a book. Could you come with me?” Scott was simply asking Cecilia to accompany him to buy a book, and she couldn’t find any reason to refuse. Besides, for Cecilia, going to a bookstore to buy books was something she hadn’t done in a long time. Thinking back to when she was a student, she loved going shopping with friends, visiting boutiques, stationery stores, and bookstores. With nostalgia for the past, Cecilia nodded and agreed to Scott’s request. However, she hadn’t expected that the bookstore Scott mentioned wasn’t an ordinary bookstore but a lounge bar. Scott insisted that they had the book he wanted to buy inside, and Cecilia reluctantly followed him in. Minors certainly couldn’t enter bars, but Cecilia felt that Scott wasn’t the type of kid who would lie. So, the following scene unfolded: a young man in a clean school uniform followed by a well-dressed woman. If Cecilia were Scott’s mother, she would be too young. Besides, what mother would take her son to a bar? If she were his sister, they were interacting as awkwardly as strangers. The surrounding patrons cast curious glances their way, whispering and guessing about their relationship. Cecilia felt uncomfortable under those stares, standing awkwardly in place. Scott walked naturally toward the book corner in the back of the lounge, as if he were browsing a bookstore with classmates. Indeed, there were several shelves of books for sale. Scott enthusiastically flipped through them, occasionally calling Cecilia over to look at this book or that. Not wanting to dampen his spirits, Cecilia reluctantly played along. However, after taking her around, Scott finally picked a book about loneliness. After he paid, Cecilia followed him out of the lounge and finally couldn’t help asking, “Why did you choose this book? Do you like this kind of subject?” She thought to herself, “Scott is only sixteen; how could he be interested in such profound philosophical books? Is he lonely?” Scott stopped, turned to look at her, and said honestly, “Of course not.”
