My sister Megan Johnson and I are twins. I’ve been frail since childhood and was sent to Grandfather’s ranch to learn combat skills, which made me hot-tempered. Megan grew up with our parents, excelled academically, had a gentle personality, and never argued with anyone. In my previous life, she married veteran William Nelson, who’s now an automotive factory executive. Neither of them was good with words, and eventually Megan died young due to misunderstandings between them. I married middle school teacher Vincent Taylor. Vincent found my behavior crude and would rather stay at school than come home. This time we were reborn on our wedding day. Seeing Megan’s worried expression, I asked, “How about we swap grooms?” Megan nodded frantically, “Yes!” ***** The church bells woke me up. I opened my eyes to see a room full of flowers and Megan looking troubled. During our previous wedding, she was shy and sweet, but seeing her like this now, I guessed she’d been reborn too. In her past life, she married automotive executive William and should have been happy. But after marriage, they lived like strangers, and eventually Megan died due to a misunderstanding. After I married Vincent, he found me insufficiently elegant and refused to come home. I ended up dying alone. I grabbed Megan’s hand, “Megan, let’s switch grooms.” Megan nodded, “Okay!” Then she hesitated, “No, William isn’t a good man.” Seeing Megan’s concern, I was touched. Though we’re twins, I was weak as a child and sent to Grandfather James Cooper’s place to learn self-defense. Megan and I didn’t have many chances to meet, but she always saved her allowance to buy me clothes and cared for me. I said, “Sis, I know how to deal with someone like William who’s not good with words.” Megan smiled through her tears. Unlike Megan’s gentle kindness, I’ve been hot-tempered since childhood. I said, “Megan, help me out. You handle Vincent, that bookworm.” Vincent was my husband in my previous life, a middle school teacher. Our personalities were completely incompatible. In the past life, he was gentle with others but found me crude, and we got along terribly. Megan patted my head, “Alright, let’s switch grooms!” By the time the wedding began, we’d already swapped wedding dresses and used veils as head coverings. Though our family was puzzled about why we were wearing veils, they didn’t ask many questions. Amid the blessings, I got into William’s car and went to his apartment. As an executive, even though William was reluctant, his mother Margaret Nelson still threw a grand wedding. William had finally agreed to marry, and she wanted everyone in the community to know about it. Honestly, there was a huge gap between our family and the Nelsons. But everyone knew William was obsessed with his ex-girlfriend Janet White and had refused to marry for many years. Finally, Margaret threatened suicide, and he compromised. So they chose the gentle and intelligent Megan. In her previous life, Megan was unaware of this and only found out when it was too late. Vincent and I had an engagement arranged by James. James insisted on honoring the agreement despite my objections. Eventually, we began our unhappy marriage. Thinking about this, I hit William.
Through my white veil, I could see William’s expression barely changed—he just frowned slightly. Just as Megan had said, he was indeed an unromantic tough guy. “William, congratulations on your wedding. I wish you happiness.” A gentle voice drifted over, and I looked up at the speaker. A blonde girl in a white dress stood there, looking delicate and charming. Her eyes glistened with tears as she smiled at William, putting on a pitiful appearance. No wonder Megan had died of heartbreak in my previous life. Janet clearly knew how to manipulate situations. Speaking to the groom like this at someone else’s wedding was incredibly rude. “Janet, we didn’t invite you!” Margaret’s furious shout echoed throughout the garden. “Margaret, I just came to offer my blessings. If I’m not welcome, I’ll leave right now.” With that, Janet cast another pitiful glance at William. Before he could react, I lifted my veil, stood on my tiptoes, and kissed William on the cheek. “Of course we welcome you,” I said. “It’s our honor that Janet came to bless William and me. Isn’t that right, darling?” I looked at William tenderly. This usually composed man seemed a bit flustered. “Yes, but wait—who are you? Where’s Megan?” While the guests were still whispering about my bold move, William finally stammered out the question. “From today on, you’re my husband,” I said. “I’m very reasonable, but I absolutely despise unfaithful men. If I ever catch you cheating after marriage…” I glanced around, spotted a baseball bat in the chapel, walked over, picked it up, and snapped it in half. “This will be your fate!” I declared. I stared directly into William’s eyes. Whether it was my imagination or not, I thought I saw him smile briefly before his expression returned to calm. Meanwhile, Janet’s face had turned deathly pale as she looked at William pitifully. “The bride is so beautiful,” Janet said. “William is so lucky. But isn’t it inappropriate for them to marry so hastily?” She put on a sad yet understanding expression. “Abigail, I support you,” Margaret said, stepping in front of me and looking at Janet with disdain. Since Margaret was backing me up, I could be even bolder. “Janet, thank you,” I said. “But this is our wedding, and it has nothing to do with you. If you care so much about William, then you should marry him yourself. Your behavior is completely out of line.” With that, I linked arms with Margaret, preparing to leave. I wanted to see whether William would go comfort his ex-girlfriend or choose to leave with me. If he really was that clueless, I’d divorce him on the spot.
Outside, the spaghetti dinner was in full swing. I sat in the bedroom eating the meal Margaret had prepared, taking in my surroundings. The Nelson family was clearly well-off. If it weren’t for Janet’s presence, William probably would have married long ago. Just as I was getting drowsy, William pushed open the door and walked in. Seeing his hesitant expression, I cut straight to the point: “I heard you have a former girlfriend you’re deeply in love with. I didn’t want Megan to suffer, so I came in her place.” “You’ve misunderstood my relationship with Janet. I do help her often, but there’s a reason for that. I don’t love her—don’t worry.” Under the dim lamplight, William explained earnestly. Honestly, I didn’t care whether he loved someone else. I had to get married eventually anyway. If William was a good man, that would be my good fortune. If he wasn’t, I could still make it on my own. But since he’d said as much, I decided to take him at his word for now. With that thought, I moved closer to William, rising on my tiptoes to whisper in his ear: “Mr. Nelson, would you like to develop a romantic relationship with me?” My fingers traced slowly down from his cheek, gently brushing over his Adam’s apple as I felt his breathing suddenly quicken. William froze, but his body temperature kept rising. I laughed softly and said, “Tonight is our wedding night. Don’t you plan to do something about it?” William stared at me with burning eyes. Suddenly, he swept me up and tossed me onto the bed. “I’m sorry. I won’t let this kind of thing happen again.” William’s voice was husky as he gazed at me with excitement. Unable to resist the atmosphere, I reached up to wrap my arms around his neck and gently kissed his Adam’s apple. I said, “I hope you can keep that promise…” In the flickering candlelight, I looked at William with some shyness. William truly lived up to his Marine background—his physical condition was impressive. William trembled as he carefully unbuttoned my clothes. As his breathing drew closer, I closed my eyes. The shrill ring of the telephone suddenly pierced the air, and William’s movements stopped. “It might be something from the company. Give me a moment, darling.” With that, he answered the persistently ringing phone. The old phone had poor sound isolation, and I could clearly hear Janet’s sobbing voice on the other end. She said, “William, I can’t breathe. Could you take me to the hospital? My parents aren’t home…” I frowned and sat up, buttoning my clothes while watching William’s conflicted expression. I said, “Tonight is our wedding night, and you’re going to abandon me to see another woman?”
