  • I’ve really been in the rain with him

Deep inside the plush Maybach, I was utterly lost in Julian’s dizzying kiss. My clothes were gone, scattered around us, yet Julian remained impeccably dressed. The stark contrast made a blush creep up my neck. He reached out, pulling my waist closer. A low chuckle rumbled from him. “The privacy screen is up, the driver can’t hear a thing, and wouldn’t dare to anyway. What are you blushing about, huh?” Watching the usually aloof man’s movements grow more fierce beneath me, I embraced him, my eyes full of love. Just as the tide of pleasure surged, rapidly climbing towards its peak, a sudden, jarring phone ring shattered the moment. Interrupted like that, Julian’s brow furrowed. But seeing the caller ID, he answered. I caught my breath, glancing at the contact name. It was Caleb, his closest friend in his circle. “Julian, you’re insa—” Julian cut him off, speaking in fluent Italian, “Not convenient. Speak Italian.” A deep breath echoed from the other end, followed by a long pause before Caleb spoke, also in Italian: “You actually married Serena? What in the world are you thinking?! You went blind saving her back then, and she abandoned you at your lowest point, running off with another man, almost destroying you completely! And now you’re getting back together with her?!” Those unfamiliar words automatically translated themselves in my mind. Once I pieced together what was being said, a cold dread washed over me, plunging me into an ice-cold despair. Julian, however, didn’t notice my abnormal reaction. “If I don’t marry her, her family will force her to marry a man old enough to be her father. I can’t bear to see her suffer that kind of humiliation.” “What about Vivian then? When you lost your sight, she was the only one by your side. She’s been with you for years, loved you so fiercely, almost giving you her very soul! All of us, your friends, we’ve seen it!” Listening to the unconcealed fury in Caleb’s voice, Julian remained coldly indifferent. “I’ll find a way to keep it a secret. She’ll never know about this.” “How long can you hide it? A lifetime? Doesn’t Vivian want to marry you?” The more he listened, the more irritated Julian became, his tone growing hurried. “Block the news of me and Serena getting married. Don’t tell anyone. In a while, I’ll prepare a fake marriage certificate for Vivian.” With that, he hung up, not wanting to hear any more of Caleb’s pointless chatter. Lowering his gaze, Julian tossed his phone aside and continued to claim me. I trembled uncontrollably. After we both reached ecstasy and started to get dressed, my lips parted, about to speak, when his phone chimed again. It was a SnapChat notification, a special one. Julian picked it up, glanced at it, and then told the driver to stop. “Vivian, something urgent came up at the company. Could you get off here and take a cab home?” I said nothing, just nodded silently, and opened the car door. The black Maybach sped away like a black streak. I stood by the roadside, staring blankly at the busy street, teeming with endless traffic. I couldn’t hold back anymore; tears streamed down my face. No one knew that to close the distance between Julian and me, I had learned Italian long ago. So, every word he and Caleb spoke, I understood. Every single word echoed in my ears, piercing my heart like countless razor-sharp blades. And long-buried memories, along with my shattered, disillusioned love, surged through my mind all at once. Julian was a golden boy, born into privilege, while I was a housekeeper’s daughter. That year, I followed my mom into the Albright family’s luxurious villa and saw Julian gracefully playing the piano in the sunlight. I had never heard such beautiful music, nor had I ever seen such a handsome boy. So, with just one glance, the name Julian was deeply etched into my heart. I never told anyone that I harbored a secret love for someone. Not just because of the vast social chasm between us, but also because I knew Julian had a girl he liked. Her name was Serena, his childhood sweetheart, who grew up with him. He never hid his affection for her, cherishing her like a precious gem, fiercely protective. Even at seventeen, to save Serena, Julian accidentally lost his sight in a car accident. But from that day on, Serena vanished into thin air, never setting foot in the Albright household again. She even got a new boyfriend. The Albright family had more than one grandchild, and Mr. and Mrs. Albright were constantly busy with their careers, with no time to care for their now-blind son. Julian was relegated to the old estate, utterly alone and forgotten. I volunteered to move back to the old estate and personally cared for him for seven long years. When I was twenty-three, I even camped out for three days and nights outside a renowned doctor’s office, pleading until he finally agreed to take Julian’s case and cured his eye condition. The tarnished gem regained its brilliance, making a stunning comeback and astonishing everyone. It only took him a year to return to the top, becoming the heir to Albright Industries. It was *me* who stayed with him through harsh winters and scorching summers, *me* who comforted him from midnight to dawn, *me* who helped him endure those grueling seven years. And it was *me* he kissed, embraced, and slept with… But I never imagined that the first thing he’d do after regaining control was to marry Serena, the very woman who had abandoned him! All these years, I’d worked tirelessly, pushing myself to the limit to keep up with him. But no matter what I became, Julian’s parents always felt I wasn’t good enough for their son, repeatedly trying to pay me off and get rid of me. Julian always argued with his family for me, and I didn’t want to let him down, so I never thought about leaving. Until today. I didn’t want to stay by his side anymore. So, I wiped away my tears, pulled out my phone, and dialed a number. “Mrs. Albright, I accept your offer of fifty million dollars. I will leave Julian forever!” ### Chapter 2 On the other end of the line, Mrs. Albright instantly became ecstatic. “You finally came to your senses? Good. How could a housekeeper’s daughter like you ever be worthy of my Albright heir? Where are you now? Come over quickly, and we can sign the contract.” Looking at the address she impatiently sent, I gave a bitter, self-deprecating laugh and hailed a cab. Upon arriving at the coffee shop, Mrs. Albright asked me many questions. After I answered each one, she showed a satisfied expression and pushed a stack of papers across the table. “It’s all in black and white. Once you sign, there’s no turning back. I’ll transfer half the money to your account as soon as you sign, and the other half on the day you leave. You must promise that once you have the money, you will never appear before Julian again, understood?” My eyelashes fluttered as I looked at the truly astronomical sum for compensation on the agreement. Of course, I wouldn’t appear again. Not in this life, nor the next, did I ever want to see Julian again. So, without hesitation, I picked up the pen and signed my name decisively. Mrs. Albright finally looked relieved. She gathered the agreement, stood up, and delivered one last instruction. “I’m only giving you two weeks. Go off-grid or leave the country, whatever you prefer. You must find a way for Julian to never see you again.” “I understand, Mrs. Albright. You have my word.” After seeing Mrs. Albright off, I returned home. Making Julian never see me again was simple. Their powerful family had certain restrictions, making international travel nearly impossible for its members. As long as I immigrated, Julian would never be able to find me again. After sifting through piles of overseas information for most of the night, I finally decided to immigrate to Australia. Once decided, I picked up my phone to check the time, only to see a new SnapChat notification. Tapping it open, it was Serena’s photo dump. The top three photos were selfies of her holding roses. In the center were three photos of two marriage certificates. Below those were three photos of two hands, fingers intertwined. I knew that since Julian wanted to keep their marriage a secret, he would never have allowed Serena to post this. But she had posted it, and she’d set it to be visible only to me, purely to gloat. I discreetly ‘liked’ the post. As soon as I exited, I received a message from Julian. “Vivian, I’m going on a business trip. I won’t be back for a few days.” I replied with an ‘Okay’ and put down my phone to wash up. The next day, I woke up early to handle my immigration paperwork. Because I was pressed for time, I specifically applied for the expedited process. The staff promised it would be done within half a month, and only then did I breathe a sigh of relief. After getting in the car, I scrolled through Serena’s SnapChat again. This time, Julian’s half-body was visible. They were holding hands, looking at new homes, and finally settled on a villa in a high-end coastal development. Just like yesterday, I liked the post. On the third day, I went to my company and resigned. After carrying my belongings home, I saw Serena’s SnapChat again, where she was already wearing a wedding dress, with a dazzling diamond ring sparkling on her ring finger. As always, I liked the post, then buried myself under my duvet. On the fourth day, I woke up to a fresh update on SnapChat. This time, the camera was focused on wedding photos hanging in their bridal suite. I stared for a long while before snapping back to reality. I liked the post as usual, then put on some makeup and went out for a farewell dinner with my closest friends. In the evening, I returned with several boxes and threw away everything related to Julian. All the gifts he had given me over the years, the matching toothbrushes and mugs, the photos we took together… Nothing was left. It all went into the trash. By the time I finished, it was late at night. I was about to turn off the lights and rest when Julian suddenly returned. He froze the moment he saw the empty room, his brow furrowed deeply. “Why are so many things missing from the house?” “I didn’t like them anymore, so I threw them out. I’ll buy new ones later.” Julian nodded, took off his clothes, tossing them onto the sofa, but his gaze was drawn to a box nearby. “You resigned?” He paused, then noticed something else on the coffee table. “Why did you suddenly take out your household registration book?” “I was too tired, wanted to rest for a while, so I resigned. And the household book, well, I have some paperwork to take care of.” I explained everything, putting my things into my bag. Seeing my composure, Julian didn’t think much of it. He pulled me into his arms, his voice gentle. “I’ve been busy these past few days and haven’t had time for you. Your birthday is in a couple of days. How about I take you to an auction tomorrow to pick out some gifts?” I didn’t refuse. The next day, as we settled into our seats in the main hall, I saw Serena. She sashayed over to us, sitting in the empty seat next to Julian. All evening, Julian kept his head turned towards me, talking, not sparing her a single glance. After the auction ended, he didn’t linger, pulling me downstairs. Before heading home, I went to the restroom. As I came out, I saw Serena cornered in the stairwell by a group of men, openly mocking her. “Well, well, isn’t it our Miss Serena? Betrayed Julian back then, and now you’ve fallen so low. Is this karma?” “I heard your father’s forcing you to marry a decrepit old man with one foot in the grave. You’re still pretty, why not join us? We’d treat you with kindness—” The rest of his sentence was cut off. Julian came down the stairs, his face deathly pale. He kicked the playboys, sending them sprawling. ### Chapter 3 Then, he pinned the ringleader to the ground, delivering punch after punch, relentlessly, leaving them bloody and bruised, begging for mercy. “We’re sorry, Mr. Albright, we were wrong! Please, have mercy on us!” “Get out! If any of you dare to show your faces in front of her again, you’ll face the consequences!” His furious roar sent the men scurrying away like terrified mice. Many onlookers had gathered in the stairwell. Julian ignored their prying eyes, helping Serena to her feet. “Are you hurt?” Serena threw herself into his arms, tears streaming down her face, looking utterly broken. “I twisted my ankle, it hurts so much.” Julian’s eyes darkened. He scooped her up, pushed through the crowd, and quickly left. To shield the woman in his arms, he braced his arm, even accidentally pushing me to the ground. My head hit the hard steps, opening a gash that bled profusely, startling the onlookers. “Your head’s bleeding! Quick, call 911!” My face crumpled in pain, cold sweat breaking out all over me. Warm blood seeped between my fingers, dripping onto my eyelashes, heavy as a thousand pounds. I watched Julian’s retreating back, unable to turn his head, my mouth filled with a bitter taste. Before, if I cut my finger while cooking for him, he’d be distraught for ages, insisting on calling a doctor, terrified I’d be left with a scar. I thought he was making a mountain out of a molehill, but he’d lower his head, kiss my hand, and gently tell me, “Vivian, you’re the apple of my eye. When you get hurt, I feel it more than you. Our life is getting better now; you don’t need to do these things anymore. Your hand will wear my ring one day; scars won’t look good.” Now, I was injured, and he looked right through me. And the ring he promised me? It was on someone else’s finger. The ambulance took me to the hospital. I registered, saw the doctor, and picked up my medication all by myself, only getting home late at night. That night, I was in so much pain I couldn’t close my eyes, tossing and turned all night. Julian didn’t come home. The next morning, I dragged my tired body out of bed to change my dressing and saw Serena’s SnapChat. It was a video of Julian kneeling, massaging her ankle and applying medicine. I watched it several times, my eyes red-rimmed, and unknowingly drifted off to sleep. When I woke up again, it was dark outside. My phone on the pillow vibrated incessantly. I answered the call and heard Julian give an address. “The Riverside Manor, Private Room 703. Come now.” I hesitated for a moment before getting out of bed. I washed up and hurried over. The moment I pushed open the private room door, the first person I saw was Serena. Her eyes were red, looking pitifully vulnerable like a wronged little bunny. Julian watched her intently, silent, his face etched with a meaningful, heavy expression. The room was quiet for a long time before I finally couldn’t help but speak. “Why did you call me here?” Julian straightened up, clasping his hands, adopting the posture of a man accustomed to power. “Vivian, were those ruffians yesterday, the ones harassing Serena, sent by you deliberately?” I froze. I instinctively glanced at Serena and caught a fleeting flicker of triumph in her eyes. In that instant, I understood that this was all likely Serena’s own doing. I gave a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. “It wasn’t me. I don’t know them, and I have no interest in doing such a thing.” Julian’s expression didn’t soften with my explanation. He lowered his gaze, his voice calm. “Vivian, the moment Serena decided to abandon me, I completely let her go. You’ve been with me for seven years; you should know who’s in my heart now. Serena’s family is down on their luck, anyone can step on them, but it shouldn’t be you. You don’t need to make things difficult for her for my sake.” At that, my heart gave a sharp, painful jolt. I couldn’t help but remember the nights he’d lash out in pain, the times I’d rushed around with him, seeking doctors and remedies, his silent expression when he was misdiagnosed and told he’d never see again… A golden boy, losing his sight entirely for a girl. But those desperate days and nights, those seven whole years, he now lightly dismissed, as if they had never happened. Finally, I remembered the marriage certificate with his and Serena’s official seals, and my eyes welled up with unshed tears. “Yes, seven years together. How is it that I’m only just finding out who’s truly in your heart now?” Hearing that, Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What do you mean?” I shook my head, a self-deprecating smile playing on my lips. “It means, I’m just a housekeeper’s daughter. What power or connections do I have to round up a bunch of thugs to bully a rich girl?” Even though I spelled it out clearly, Julian still didn’t believe me. I was tired. I took a deep breath and gave up on explaining. “Since you don’t believe me, then just tell me directly, what do you want me to do?” Julian pinched the bridge of his nose. “Apologize, Vivian. When you do something wrong, you should say sorry.” At that moment, Serena, who had been looking pitifully vulnerable for a long time, suddenly spoke. “Oh, an apology isn’t necessary. If you’re truly sorry, just drink all these.” ### Chapter 4 On the table, rows of amber whiskey bottles sat. My gaze moved up, landing on Julian, wanting a definitive answer from him. But the lights were dim, obscuring his expression. In the boundless silence, I felt a sense of breathlessness. I gasped, and many past memories flashed through my mind. When he first moved into the old estate, Julian, unable to see, would numb himself with alcohol every day. I worried about his health and constantly urged him to stop, but he wouldn’t listen. Until one time, when he was drunk, he sneered and pushed several bottles towards me. “Now even a housekeeper’s daughter dares to lecture me. Am I truly a tiger fallen to the plains, bullied by dogs? Fine, if you drink all of these, I’ll listen to you.” I wanted to tell him that wasn’t what I meant, that I wasn’t lecturing him, I was… worried about him. So, even though I was allergic to alcohol, for his sake, I didn’t hesitate for a second. I picked up a bottle and drank it all. Within minutes, I was rushed to the hospital. When I woke up, I saw him sitting by my bedside, his face dark. “*I* was the one who was drunk, not you! You knew you were allergic to alcohol, why would you gamble with your life?” I only answered with one sentence. “Because I was worried about you, Julian. Your eyes will see again eventually. Even if they don’t get better, I’ll stay with you for life. So, please, don’t give up, okay?” From that day on, Julian quit drinking. For years afterward, not even an empty bottle could be found in the house. Thinking back, I started to laugh, but tears glimmered in my eyes. I didn’t explain further. I leaned over, picked up the mustard powder sitting nearby, and poured it into the glass, my voice resolute. “Just these drinks? How can that show sincerity? I’ll add some self-penalties. Is that enough?” With that, I picked up the glass, tilted my head back, and poured it down, one glass after another. The burning, bitter taste spread down my throat, filling my stomach, but never reaching my heart. It wasn wasn’t until the seventh glass that Julian, unable to bear it any longer, finally called out. “Enough!” Looking at the dozen or so unfinished glasses, I smiled. “Is that enough? Have I completed my apology? Have I pleased your beloved enough?” Hearing this, Julian abruptly stood up and grabbed my hand. His usually expressionless face was now dark enough to drip acid. “You know I don’t mean it like that! Vivian, I told you, Serena and I are completely over. The Albright family disapproves of you, and if you do something so outrageous, people will seize on it. I just don’t want you to be cornered or criticized!” Julian spoke with conviction, and it all sounded perfectly logical. But I laughed out loud. The Albright family disapproved of me, a housekeeper’s daughter with humble origins. But did he really think they’d welcome Serena, who repaid kindness with malice, into their family? Yet, despite a thousand difficulties ahead, he still married her simply because Serena asked him to, didn’t he? It was all just an excuse for not loving me enough! I didn’t want to say any more pointless words. I shook him off, turned, and walked away. Just as I reached the door, my body swayed, and I passed out. “Vivian!” Julian’s heart seized. He rushed forward without hesitation, scooped me into his arms, and turned to leave. Serena quickly grabbed his sleeve, calling out with a sob, “Julian, I feel a little dizzy.” Julian paused. But only for a few seconds. He then strode away swiftly, leaving only one sentence behind. “I need to take Vivian to the hospital. Call my assistant to take care of you.” When I woke up again, I found myself in the hospital. Julian, who hadn’t slept all night, finally breathed a sigh of relief when he saw my eyes open. We stared at each other for a long time, saying nothing. Julian poured me a glass of warm water, handed it to me, tucked in my blanket, then got up to call the doctor for a re-examination, patiently taking note of all the instructions. He pushed off several urgent meeting requests. Seeing his assistant waiting by the door, looking troubled, I finally spoke. “You should go. I can take care of myself. These things aren’t your responsibility anyway.” Julian paused, the hand holding the knife still. His voice was slow. “Everything I do for you is my responsibility, Vivian. Have you forgotten? Back then, you took care of me the same way.” A flicker of haze crossed my eyes. Back then, because of his blindness, he was abandoned by his powerful family like a discarded pawn. Only I taught him Braille, studied with him, took him out to sunbathe, prepared all sorts of delicious food for him every day… It was like privately possessing the moon; my once gray life became bright as day. And those seven lost years were some of the most precious, joyful times of my life. Unfortunately, the moon didn’t belong to me, and I couldn’t go back to the past. In the afternoon, the doctor took me into the examination room. Half an hour later, a nurse helped me back to my room. The moment the door opened, Julian was holding my phone, his brow furrowed, speaking in a chilling voice to Mrs. Albright. “I told you, Vivian and I are truly in love, we like each other. I don’t care about her family background. You don’t need to waste any more effort. I will marry her, and she won’t leave me.” Hearing the movement, he looked up at me. The next second, Mrs. Albright’s confused voice came through the phone. “What do you mean, she won’t leave? Don’t you know? Vivian already agreed a few days ago to go abroad…” ### Chapter 5 The words stopped abruptly. I dragged my faltering steps forward, snatched back my phone, and hung up. Julian looked at me in astonishment, not understanding why I was so agitated. “What’s wrong?” Seeing his clueless expression, I knew he hadn’t heard Mrs. Albright’s entire conversation. I breathed a sigh of relief, looked away, and tried to make my voice sound calm. “Nothing. I just don’t want you all fighting over me anymore.” Indeed, the Albright family had been constantly arguing about Julian and me, always trying to break us up, and he had fought with them several times. Hearing me say that, Julian didn’t suspect anything further. He then asked about my test results. “The doctor said there are no major issues. I can be discharged.” After returning home, Julian didn’t go out much for the next few days, staying by my side. I wasn’t as lively and cheerful as before, often sitting in a corner, lost in thought, looking unenthusiastic. Julian couldn’t figure out why. He hugged me, wanting to coax me, but I got up and went to the bedroom. “I’m not feeling well. I’m going to rest for a bit.” Watching my retreating back, Julian seemed surprised. He thought I was still dwelling on the apology incident last time, so he asked his assistant to prepare a surprise. On my birthday, he specially hosted a banquet to celebrate. Out of respect for Julian, most people in his circle attended. In front of him, they were civil to me. But the moment he left, they would gather, whispering and judging, their gossip never-ending. “If it weren’t for Julian, I’d never come to a housekeeper’s daughter’s birthday party. It’s so degrading to even say!” “I wonder what Julian sees in her. Look at that cheap and tacky, reeking of poverty vibe. It’s suffocating!” “Julian truly is a man of honor. If it were me, I’d just pay her off. If he really marries her, it’ll disgrace the Albright family name!” Despite being the guest of honor, I stood alone, unnoticed. Listening to the undisguised insults and mockery from all directions, I felt utterly exhausted. If it weren’t for fearing Julian would notice something amiss, I wouldn’t have come here. Because of this deliberate exclusion, every single minute dragged on unbearably. It wasn’t until seven o’clock that the banquet hall suddenly buzzed with excitement. All the guests turned in unison towards the main entrance, their expressions of disgust instantly morphing into fawning smiles. News travels fast in these circles. Who didn’t know about Julian’s outburst for Serena last time? This sight confirmed he still cared, so they quickly scrambled to curry favor. “Mr. Albright, so you left earlier to pick up Miss Serena! So many years have passed, and your feelings are still so strong!” “Of course! They’re true childhood sweethearts. Look at Miss Serena’s elegance and beauty; she’s such a perfect match for the extraordinary Mr. Albright.” Amidst all the speculation, I looked at Serena, who entered arm-in-arm with Julian, and a sudden understanding dawned on me. She wore a magnificent haute couture gown, a dazzling diamond necklace accentuating her graceful posture. Her delicate, refined face exuded an air of refined elegance, born from wealth and privilege. Even standing beside the imposing Julian, she showed no hint of inferiority or nervousness. Randomly, I remembered a sketch Julian had drawn after regaining his sight, a sketch without a clear face. Back then, he said he just drew it out of boredom, and I only thought it was pretty, not thinking too much of it. But today, seeing Serena, I knew exactly who was in that drawing. It wasn’t a reunion after all, but a love he’d simply never forgotten. I lowered my gaze, turning silently, but Serena called out to me. “Miss Vivian, I heard it’s your birthday today. I came uninvited, I hope you don’t mind? I even brought a gift!” With that, she signaled someone to bring in a small, pure white puppy. “Its name is Ari. Isn’t it adorable?” Seeing the playful puppy leap towards me, I recoiled several steps in alarm, bumping into a table. My face paled, and my eyes filled with fear and panic. “Please take it away. I don’t like dogs.” ### Chapter 6 Hearing my words, Serena’s face fell. “Julian, is Miss Vivian still mad at me about last time? Then I’ll just leave now, I don’t want to bother you two.” With that, she turned to go, but Julian quickly grabbed her arm, frowning as he looked at me. “She meant well, Vivian. Don’t you usually love animals? Just accept it.” Seeing the displeasure in his eyes, I clenched my hands tightly, only able to turn to his assistant. “Mr. Hayes, I’m wearing heels, so it’s inconvenient. Could you please help me hold the puppy?” The people around me started to murmur sarcastically again, saying I was ungrateful and liked to put on airs. Julian also assumed I was deliberately giving Serena a hard time again. His face darkened, and he led Serena into the inner room. The main hall quickly emptied, leaving just me. I poured a glass of water and drank it, slowly calming my panicked and anxious emotions. I used to love dogs. But five years ago, on a stormy night during a power outage, Julian came down with a high fever. I braved the pouring rain to go out. A neighbor’s large dog chased me all the way, biting a chunk of flesh from my calf. Finally, I endured the pain to bring a doctor back. Only after confirming Julian was safe and sound did I get my own wound treated. That incident left me with a fear of dogs, but I never told him about it so he wouldn’t worry. Even through my dress, I could still feel the outline of that scar. The guests at the banquet were masters of opportunism. Seeing Julian’s attitude, they openly started giving me the cold shoulder. During the celebration, everyone crowded around Serena, as if it were *her* birthday. Julian’s anger had subsided somewhat, and he finally called me over to blow out the candles. I walked over silently, and just as I was about to make a wish, I heard Serena exclaim with delight. “Oh, what a coincidence! Miss Vivian, you and Ari have the same birthday! Why don’t we celebrate together?” At her words, everyone around me covered their mouths, stifling snickers. Seeing the taunt in her eyes, my fingers dug deep into my palms. I took a sharp breath, my voice laced with coldness. “In that case, let the puppy blow out the candles, and everyone sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to it. I won’t intrude.” Seeing that I was actually leaving, a vein throbbed in Julian’s forehead. He called out to me in a low voice. “Vivian! This is *your* birthday banquet. What kind of impression does it make if you leave first?” I ignored him and continued walking towards the door. Julian, at his wit’s end, chased after me and grabbed me. He whispered something close to my ear, then pushed me back towards the cake. “Listen to me! Everyone here today is from our circle. If you abruptly leave, it’ll cause trouble with the Albright family, and they’ll be even more against us.” Against *us*? What ‘us’? Hadn’t he already married Serena…? Happy birthday songs began to echo around me. But I just twitched my lips, stiff and numb like a statue, showing no trace of happiness. Until someone suddenly picked up the puppy and thrust it into my arms, making my skin crawl. Mid-song, the puppy started to squirm restlessly and then leaped out of my arms. The towering champagne pyramid was knocked over, crashing directly towards Serena and me. Screams erupted throughout the venue, and the falling glasses blurred in my vision. I watched, helpless, as Julian shielded Serena and moved away, as countless shards of glass and spilled wine crashed down on me. My pale shoulders were grazed by the fragments, leaving long, bleeding cuts. Streaks of blood dripped down, staining my soaked white dress red. I collapsed to the ground, a pained moan escaping my lips, cold sweat beading on my forehead. Julian heard it and turned back. Seeing I was injured, he was about to return when Serena shrieked beside him. “Ah! Julian, Ari scratched me! What if I get rabies?!” Looking at the tiny scratch on her ankle, Julian hesitated for a moment, then instructed his assistant. “You take Vivian to the hospital to get her wounds treated.” With that, he hurried away with Serena. The other guests also left, not forgetting to kick me while I was down as they departed. “Ari, Vivian… Miss Vivian is quite good at naming things! Look at some people, don’t they just look like a stray dog?” “Don’t insult Ari! Ari is so cute; it’s nothing like a mangy dog trying to climb the social ladder!” Every word, every syllable, landed clearly in my ears. I looked at my utterly disheveled state, my nose stung, and tears welled in my eyes. The birthday sign swayed and fell, landing in front of me. I picked it up, and looking at the chaotic scene of an empty hall, my tears finally fell unchecked. My twenty-third birthday ended like this, in miserable, humiliating end. ### Chapter 7 It was past midnight when I finally dragged my exhausted body home. After turning on the lights, my phone chimed a few times. It was a message from Serena. “You’ve been liking all my SnapChat posts every day, so you must know Julian and I are officially married by now, right? He also said he’s giving me a wedding in the Maldives. I saw the setup; it’s magnificent. Every single detail is exactly what we dreamed of when we were young. I can’t believe he never forgot.” “I also have you to thank. If it weren’t for you, Julian’s eyes wouldn’t have seen the light of day again. I really should thank you for taking care of my husband for seven whole years.” Looking at this unbridled mockery, I was too tired to even be angry. I went back to my bedroom, lay down, and fell into a deep sleep. Julian still didn’t come home that night, only sending a message. [Vivian, I still have some things to deal with. Are your injuries serious? If it hurts a lot, tell me, and I’ll come back immediately.] I stared at the lines of text, my gaze flickering. After a long moment, I replied. [No need.] Julian, from now on, I no longer need you. After the wound on my shoulder scabbed over, I went back to the Albright family’s old estate alone. When Julian was blind, the place where he and I lived was just the two of us. I found a shovel and walked to the still-lush peach tree in the courtyard. Beneath it, buried since Julian’s eighteenth birthday, were the wishes we had made. I dug it up. The iron box was rusted, and moisture fogged the sealed glass bottle. I pulled out the paper folded into a star shape, unfolded it, and saw my own handwriting. “I wish Julian could see the world again. I wish Julian peace and happiness. I wish I could stay by Julian’s side forever.” The future I wished for was all about Julian. Some came true. Some would never come true in this lifetime. Next, I unfolded the other paper, written by Julian. “I wish to regain my sight. I wish Serena all the best.” Every word was about him and Serena. There was no mention of me. It turned out he truly never blamed Serena for abandoning him. He was even willing to suffer the car accident for her, without any regrets. I gave a bitter, sorrowful smile, crumpled the note I had written, and threw it down the drain. Then, I took off the necklace from my neck. This was a gift Julian bought me with the money from his first business deal after returning to the Albright family. I felt bad that he spent so much, but he just held me, kissing me incessantly. “Vivian, they say it’s lonely at the top, but as long as you’re by my side, I’ll have the courage to keep climbing. This is just a necklace. Everything I’ll ever own, including myself, is yours.” I buried this necklace, and everything related to our past. After filling the pit with earth, I turned to go home. But just as I reached the door, I ran into Julian and Serena. Seeing me there, a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes. “Vivian, what are you doing here?” I didn’t answer, but instead countered with a question. “What about you? What are you and she doing here?” Julian hadn’t spoken yet when Serena laughed and said, “I haven’t heard Julian play the piano in ages. He said the piano is at the old estate, so we came back for it. Miss Vivian, you know your way around here, could you lead us?” With that, she didn’t even wait for my consent, pulling me towards the villa. ### Chapter 8 The moment the door opened, countless memories flooded my mind. The furniture and decor in the room were exactly as they had been the day we left, no different. Perhaps from living there for so long, Julian too seemed touched by revisiting the old place. He turned to me. “Vivian, do you remember when we…” “I don’t remember.” I lowered my head, my voice barely a whisper. Julian paused, then pointed to a LEGO model in the corner. “Didn’t we put it in the study after we finished building it? How did it get moved here?” I didn’t follow his gaze, answering flatly, “You couldn’t see then. Many memories are like illusions, all mixed up.” Just like I thought Julian loved me. But in reality, his feelings for me were merely a mirage-like illusion, a desperate comfort born out of desperation. Because he couldn’t see, he could only rely on touch. I was like a guide cane, which was why he felt I was so important. But once his sight returned, once he could do anything he pleased, I became irrelevant. And I, too, had believed that the support we gave each other in our youth could see us through any storm. In the end, it was all like a reflection in water, a flower in a mirror—a beautiful but empty dream. Seeing the fleeting look of desolation on my face, Julian felt a knot of tightness in his chest. He wanted to ask what was wrong, but I turned and went to the balcony. “The piano is in the last room down the hallway. You two can go by yourselves.” Listening to their receding footsteps, I sat in the rocking chair, slowly closing my eyes. Before long, the bright, sunny sky suddenly darkened, and a gentle rain began to fall. I got up and returned to the living room, hearing piano music from nearby. It was the first piano piece I had ever heard in my life, “Liebestraum.” Listening to it, I felt as if I was back in that summer when I was ten. Unconsciously, I followed the sound. Through the window, I saw Julian and Serena sitting at the piano, playing a four-hand duet. Even after so many years, their chemistry hadn’t faded in the slightest; it was just as it used to be. And seven years later, the depths of his eyes still held endless affection for her. It turned out Julian loved Serena so deeply, so much that even after she abandoned him for seven whole years, he never forgot her. Yes, he was a golden boy, she was a golden girl. Why did I, a housekeeper’s daughter, insist on intruding into a world that didn’t belong to me, foolishly dreaming of owning a person who wasn’t mine to begin with? If time could turn back, I wouldn’t have fallen in love with Julian at first sight, wouldn’t have secretly loved him, and certainly wouldn’t have rushed out to care for him, blind as he was, for seven long years. The piano music gradually faded, finally falling silent. At some point, Serena’s hand rested on Julian’s, sliding upward. Through the window, I saw Serena climb onto his shoulders, offering her red lips to him. “Julian, I know you still love me…” In that moment, I couldn’t bear it anymore and turned to leave. The rain grew heavier, drenching me completely. My mind was a blur. One moment I felt like dry grass on the edge of a cliff, the next like a lone boat overturned by waves. Rootless, adrift everywhere. Even my tears were lost in the rain. Leaving no trace. ### Chapter 9 After arriving home, I pulled out a suitcase and began packing my last few belongings. I worked until early morning. Julian still hadn’t returned, but I no longer cared. The next day, I went to the immigration office and retrieved all my documents. On the way back, I booked a flight departing that afternoon. When the car pulled up to the gate, I saw Julian’s Maybach parked in the driveway, and I couldn’t help but quicken my pace. As soon as I entered the bedroom, I saw Julian by my suitcase, seemingly about to open it. In a panic, I blurted out, “Aren’t you with Serena? Why are you back?” Julian froze. He slowly turned around, and the moment he lifted his head, his eyes actually held anger. He walked over to me, his voice filled with deep helplessness. “Vivian, what crazy thoughts are running through your head now? I told you, Serena and I will never have any connection again.” Never again have any connection? But you married her to protect her. I laughed through my tears, still choosing not to expose him. “Then I misunderstood.” Seeing no unusual expression on my face, Julian slightly exhaled in relief. “Tonight, there’s a family dinner at the Albright’s. My family has agreed that I can bring you back with me.” Hearing that, I was also stunned. Mr. and Mrs. Albright… agreed? Seeing my dazed look, Julian ruffled my hair and handed me a card. “Vivian, don’t worry, one day I’ll make them accept you, and you’ll stand proudly by my side. I’m a bit tired now and want to rest for a while. How about Mr. Hayes accompanies you to pick out some suitable dresses?” I stared at the card for a long moment before taking it. “You rest. I’ll go by myself.” Julian rubbed his temples and nodded. I put the documents I had just retrieved into my bag. Julian lay on the bed, falling into a deep sleep. Looking at his face, which hadn’t changed much since he was seventeen, I felt a slight trance. I slowly raised my hand one last time, tracing from his brow downwards. Perhaps he sensed my small movement in his dream, for Julian caught my hand, murmuring softly. “Serena, stop bothering me.” Hearing that mumble, I smiled soundlessly. I withdrew my hand, picked up my luggage, and went downstairs. The villa was quiet; the housekeepers were all on their lunch break. No one knew I had left. On the way to the airport, I blocked and deleted all of Julian’s contact information. Then, I deactivated all my social media accounts. The busy airport buzzed with people coming and going. I watched the constantly changing display screen and made one last call. “Mrs. Albright, I’m at the airport as promised, about to board.” Mrs. Albright on the other end sounded very pleased, her delight unconcealed. “Good. As long as you don’t show up at tonight’s family dinner, the remaining money will be transferred to your account. Well then, goodbye.” Listening to the boarding announcement over the loudspeaker, I gently shook my head. “No, Mrs. Albright. It’s never goodbye.” Then, I hung up the phone, tossed it into a trash can, and walked into the boarding gate. Striding purposefully. Without a second thought. ### Chapter 10 Julian’s sleep wasn’t peaceful. He vaguely dreamt of past memories, the dark, confused pain resurfacing. But this time, the girl who had always silently stayed by his side was gone. “Vivian…” He murmured her name, his brow deeply furrowed. Trapped in a nightmare, his chest heaved violently. In the dream, he groped his way up, searching everywhere for the person who should have been with him, but no matter how he called out, only desolate silence answered. Overwhelmed by intense fear, his eyes snapped open, beads of sweat glistening on his forehead. The blackout curtains were effective, plunging the room into darkness. His heart hammered, and for a moment, he couldn’t distinguish reality from the dream. He sat up, his voice trembling. “Vivian?” The room was silent. He called out again. “Vivian!” When there was still no response, he stumbled out of bed, fumbling to switch on the light. The room instantly filled with light. Only when he truly saw everything in the room did he finally breathe a sigh of relief. The palpitations from the nightmare gradually receded. Julian rubbed his temples, and seeing no one he wanted to see in the room, he froze for a moment. Where was Vivian? His recently calmed heartbeat began to pound violently again. He gasped, abruptly opening the bedroom door. The villa was unusually quiet, with only a few housekeepers tidying the living room. Seeing Julian emerge from his room, they all greeted him in unison. “Where’s Vivian?” He spoke almost impatiently, his voice trembling. “Miss Vivian? We haven’t seen her. Shouldn’t she be resting in the room with you, sir?” Julian was about to say something else when his phone chimed with a familiar notification. He instinctively tapped the message. Serena’s whining voice came through the phone. [Julian, the lights in my living room are out, and no one’s home right now. Can you come help me?] Julian frowned, about to refuse, when another voice message came through. [Julian, I know you’re taking Miss Vivian back to the Albright’s tonight. I’ll be all alone tonight, and if there are no lights…] The rest of the words were left unsaid, replaced by a soft, low sob. “If Vivian comes back, give me a call. I have something to take care of now.” Dropping those words, Julian went back to his room, changed clothes, grabbed his car keys from the table, and left. Arriving at Serena’s place, as soon as he pushed open the door, he saw Serena casually lying on the sofa in a flimsy, cool nightgown, a large expanse of her chest exposed. Hearing the noise, she opened her eyes, seemingly just woken up and hazy. “Julian, you’re here.” She seemed incredibly happy, scampering forward and throwing herself into his arms. The softness of her chest pressed against him, sending tingles through him. “Why are you wearing so little? What if you catch a cold?” He instinctively hugged the woman in his arms, letting her bury herself against his chest. “I was a little scared. If you hadn’t come, I would have been alone tonight…” Her tearful voice came from below. He responded almost instantly. “Then you can come back to the Albright’s with me tonight.” But the moment he said it, he regretted it. He was about to try to backtrack when the woman in his arms looked up, her eyes red, at him. “Really, Julian?” ### Chapter 1

In that instant, the words of refusal caught in his throat. But seeing his troubled expression, Serena’s tears instantly fell. “Julian, are you very conflicted? It’s okay, I don’t mind. If it’s too much trouble for you, I won’t go tonight.” She had expected him to immediately soften his tone and coax her, but the man in front of her suddenly seemed relieved. He reached out and stroked her head. “Tonight is indeed a bit special. You shouldn’t come with me.” Serena’s eyes widened in disbelief, a flicker of hatred crossing them, quickly replaced by a pitiful, vulnerable look. The tears that were about to stop now streamed down her face again. “Julian…” Julian, however, was clearly distracted and didn’t notice. He gently pushed her away and looked up at the light fixture. “Is this the one that’s broken?” Seeing that he wasn’t following her lead, Serena bit her lip and gave a whiny ‘hmm,’ then sat on the sofa in a huff, no longer looking at him. Julian’s mind wasn’t on the present at all. The dream from earlier kept surfacing, and the dread in his heart grew, almost engulfing him. Noticing Julian’s unusual behavior, Serena still sidled up to him, sobbing as she tugged at his sleeve. “Julian, what’s wrong?” Julian snapped back to reality, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead from his violently pounding heart. He shook off Serena’s hand, frowning as he pulled out his phone, intending to call Vivian and ask what was going on. But strangely, the call wouldn’t go through. The constant ringing made him increasingly anxious. “Serena, I have to go. I’ll find someone to fix it for you later.” Hurriedly dropping those words, he ignored Serena’s reaction, opened the door, and strode out. Watching the door slam shut in front of her, Serena’s eyes were almost overflowing with venom. She didn’t need to think; she knew Julian had rushed off to find that bitch Vivian. She pulled out her phone and furiously typed a line of text. [Vivian, why are you such a slut? Do you really want to be a mistress who hides in the shadows? Why don’t you just die!] The moment she pressed send, a glaring red exclamation mark popped up! Vivian had blocked her! Instantly, a bad feeling rose in her heart. She instinctively hurried to delete the provocative messages she had sent to Vivian from her phone. Meanwhile, Julian, back home, pushed open his bedroom door, still unable to see the figure he yearned for. “Vivian? Hasn’t she returned?” For some reason, his anxious voice was trembling. “We haven’t seen Miss Vivian since noon.” “Oh, and sir, when we were tidying the room earlier, we noticed Miss Vivian’s belongings seem to be missing.” The words struck him with a chill, and he began to tremble uncontrollably. “What do you mean?” The housekeeper looked up, perplexed. “Sir, didn’t you take Miss Vivian’s things away? All her clothes are gone. I thought you wanted to buy her new ones…” ### Chapter 1

His heart violently lurched. He instinctively scanned the living room, searching for something. As if expecting Vivian to appear before him the next second. “Vivian…” Julian called her name over and over, the panic in his heart growing larger and larger. An impossible thought gradually surfaced. Vivian left him? He refused to believe it! “Vivian, are you playing a prank on me? Come out, this isn’t funny at all.” “It was my fault this morning, but Serena and I are really just friends. Please believe me, okay?” Julian spoke, his steps never faltering, his gaze sweeping around, trying to find Vivian in hiding. It was only then that he suddenly realized many things were missing from the villa. Our joint photos, Vivian’s personal belongings. All gone! How could this be? How could everything be gone? Julian was almost losing his mind. The dream from noon resurfaced in his memory. Unwilling to give up, he pulled out his phone and tried calling Vivian again. But only a series of beeps came from the other end. He sent a message to Vivian with trembling hands, only to see a large red exclamation mark! Vivian had blocked him! His pupils widened dramatically, his body trembling. A massive dread instantly consumed him. He numbly scrolled through his phone, searching for any social media accounts related to Vivian, but they were all gone. She had deactivated them, all of them! His mind went blank in waves. He racked his brains but couldn’t think of anywhere else she could be. Vivian’s father had died when she was young, and her mother had passed away from a serious illness two years ago. He could only place his hopes on Chloe’s friends. “Hello? This is Julian Albright. Is Vivian with you?” “Huh? What nonsense are you talking about? How could Vivian be here?” This conversation happened countless times. Even Julian’s own friends were asked, but no one knew where Vivian had gone. That extreme taste of despair swept over him again and again. He felt as if he had entered the nightmare where Vivian was gone. His feelings for Vivian now completely filled his heart. Her sudden departure was like a piece of his flesh being torn out. His very being felt ripped apart, the agonizing pain almost shattering him completely. “Vivian, please stop playing games with me, okay? I want to see you.” Julian roared hoarsely, his eyes completely bloodshot, like a lion roaring after losing its mate. But why? He asked himself. Every detail of his interactions with Vivian during this time replayed in his mind. At that moment, he suddenly remembered his bias towards Serena and his neglect of Vivian during this period. And that day, when she heard him speaking Italian with his friend, her body had suddenly stiffened. “Vivian, did she ever learn Italian?” The housekeeper, seeing his somewhat frantic desperation, cautiously spoke. “Miss Vivian has been studying foreign languages for years, and even hired a private tutor, sir. Didn’t you know?” *Bzzzzzz.* The tight string in his mind snapped completely. ### Chapter 1

So Vivian had understood their conversation that day! She already knew he had married Serena and that they were planning to keep it from her. Julian’s heart raced wildly. He had thought he could hide it well, that he could juggle both Serena and Vivian. He thought he was being cautious. Serena, for him, was merely a past obsession. He was furious that she had left him for another man and had become almost manic, wanting to keep her by his side forever. But she was just the one he hid, he didn’t deliberately let Vivian know about their relationship, because the one he truly loved, ever since he lost his sight that year, would only be Vivian. But he never imagined she had learned Italian. She understood that conversation, she discovered everything! But how could she be so cruel? He had only been obsessed with the past, and only felt pity for Serena. How could she deactivate all her information and disappear from his world entirely? His vision blurred, gradually obscured by overflowing tears. He remembered those years Vivian had spent by his side, in the complete darkness, only Vivian’s voice was steadfast and warm. “Don’t be scared, Julian. I’ll be with you forever.” “Forever?” “As long as you don’t do anything to betray me, then of course, it’ll be forever.” At that time, Julian held the young girl in his arms, his voice choked. “I would never betray you, Vivian. So it’s settled, you’ll stay with me forever.” But when did things change? Was it Serena’s repeated pleas, or Serena’s crying, wronged face? Gradually, he began to think that Vivian being by his side was a given. He started to remember the person who had abandoned him, and that person, by chance, was now down on her luck, waiting for him to save her. He confidently believed he could keep everything firmly in his grasp. But he forgot that even though Vivian had only him, she was never one to swallow her pride and compromise. Rather than suffer internal torment, she would rather leave him completely. Vivian understood him too well. She clearly knew that if Julian found out she was leaving, he would definitely stop her, using every means to keep her by his side. So, she abandoned everything—including every way he could find her—and utterly vanished from Julian’s world. Understanding all this, Julian suppressed the bitterness in his heart. “Vivian, no way. I can’t let you go!” He murmured Vivian’s name over and over, his eyes filled with longing for her. “Vivian, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have treated you like that for another woman.” “You can do whatever you want to me, hit me, curse me, it’s all fine, but please, don’t leave my side?” He apologized countless times, his voice growing hoarse. But the person who should have heard him was no longer by his side. Saying anything more was futile. “Vivian, I will find you. To the ends of the earth, we will meet again!” Julian’s eyes hardened, and he declared resolutely. He would never let go. Vivian would always be his. He would admit his mistakes, he would kneel and apologize, he would find a way to make her forgive him, but he would absolutely not allow Vivian to leave him. Julian’s eyes were filled with determination. He tremblingly opened his phone’s photo album, and piously kissed her photo on the screen. ### Chapter 1

The plane landed in Melbourne right at midnight. The customs officer flipped through my documents, asking some routine questions. “Ms. Vivian, how long do you intend to stay in Australia?” “Hello. I’ve received an offer from a company in Melbourne, and my work visa is all processed. I plan to work here for two years currently.” Hearing my fluent English, the officer didn’t press me further, stamped my passport, and let me through. I thanked her politely, collected my luggage, and left the airport. I used my new phone to search for a hotel’s location and hailed a cab. The driver was an Australian of Asian descent. Seeing my face, she immediately started chatting with me. Hearing my native language in a foreign land filled me with warmth. We chatted idly the whole way, and the driver, who was a bit older, gave me a lot of advice about living in Melbourne, all of which I carefully noted down. When we reached the hotel, before parting ways, we even exchanged contact information. The driver helped me carry my luggage into the elevator before leaving. I used my room card to open the door. Seeing the clean and tidy room, the tension I had been holding onto finally eased. I unpacked my things, went downstairs for dinner, then came back, washed up, and quickly fell asleep on the soft, large bed. I slept soundly through the night. The next afternoon at two, I woke up groggily. Seeing the completely unfamiliar room, I still felt a little disoriented. It took me about five minutes to finally realize I had left my homeland and arrived in a brand new country. Melbourne was in the middle of summer, and the weather was hot. I pulled out a few dresses, changed into one, went out for some lunch, then took a cab near the company, ready to check out the apartment I had booked earlier. The landlord arrived on time and handed me the apartment keys. After entering my new home, I walked around, noting down everything I needed to buy, then hired a cleaner to tidy the place. In the evening, I returned to the apartment with my luggage and settled in. Over the next few days, I bought many necessities, and the previously empty rooms slowly filled up. While unpacking, I kept in touch with my roommate, who would be arriving in a few days. Gradually, I adapted to local life. With my excellent cooking skills and several schools nearby, and being quite young myself, I naturally blended into the international student community and became friends with two girls who lived nearby. They took me shopping, introduced me to local restaurants, and showed me around the sights. I worked at my company and spent my free time exploring with them, living a rather enjoyable life. This morning, there was a commotion outside the door. Rubbing my sleepy eyes, I walked out of the bedroom and saw a girl in her early twenties pushing a suitcase, shyly greeting me. “Hi, are you Vivian? I’m Chloe, your roommate.” I remembered then that my roommate had mentioned a few days ago that she would be arriving in Melbourne today. I quickly welcomed her, helping her with her luggage and showing her around the apartment. In just one morning, the two of us, who had only chatted online, quickly became close. That afternoon, we even went grocery shopping together. Chloe was still a student and would be starting classes in a few days. I personally cooked a spread and invited a few friends I had made earlier for a get-together. After some time together, everyone’s relationships had noticeably grown closer. ### Chapter 1

Apart from me, everyone else had a few drinks. Their faces were slightly flushed, clearly a little tipsy. Someone, I don’t know who started it, suddenly began to complain about their ex-boyfriends. Some burst into laughter, others had tears in their eyes. Some of the stories were so outrageous that Chloe couldn’t stop laughing. She casually nudged me, the only sober one. “Vivian, what about you?” I looked blank for a moment, my mind involuntarily drifting back to those past events. For some reason, I found it hard to speak. After all this time, I actually didn’t feel sad when Julian’s name came up. It was just that, looking at these young girls, a few years younger than me and still students, I truly didn’t know how to begin. The atmosphere fell silent. Chloe realized something was amiss and quickly changed the subject, not putting me in an awkward position. After everyone had left, Chloe’s mind cleared a little. She came over, cautiously apologizing. “I’m sorry, Vivian. I had too much to drink, and I wasn’t thinking straight earlier.” Of course, I wouldn’t blame her. I smiled, gently ruffled the poor, sheepish girl’s head, and urged her to go rest. After tidying the room, I washed up, lay on the bed, and opened the SnapChat account I had newly registered before coming to Australia. I had only given this SnapChat to one friend. No one else knew where I had gone or what my new contact information was. Looking at the dozens of messages on my phone, and the constantly increasing red dots, my eyes widened in surprise. I tapped it open and saw that almost all the messages were related to Julian. “Julian is crazy, isn’t he? Wasn’t he perfectly happy with his ‘first love’ before? Now that you’re gone, it’s like he suddenly had an epiphany, realized how important you are. It’s hilarious; he really thinks he’s the male lead in a ‘chase-his-wife-after-burning-bridges’ drama, doesn’t he? Like a few regrets will magically win back his love?” “He comes looking for me every other day, asking where you are. But don’t worry, sis, I’d never tell him your location.” “Oh, right, a month ago Julian had a huge fight with his mom at their family dinner. I only overheard bits and pieces, but it sounded like he was blaming her for driving you away.” “That guy is definitely sick. What does it have to do with his mom? The main problem is him being two-timing and trying to deceive you!” “He’s also been drinking heavily lately. I heard he almost got stomach perforation a few days ago and ended up in the ICU. The doctors gave strict warnings not to drink like that anymore. If you ask me, he’s just too lucky. Why didn’t he drink himself to death?” “…” There were many more messages cursing Julian below. Receiving so many messages about Julian again, I felt no ripple of emotion in my heart. It felt so distant, almost as if those past events had happened in another lifetime. I pulled back the curtains. Outside, the sky was clear and vast, a brilliant blue like a perfectly polished sapphire. The warm sunshine, bright and radiant, dispelled the chill from my body. “Vivian, I’m off to class!” Outside, the cheerful shout of the young girl rang out. I smiled, told her to be careful on her way, and opened my phone, my voice filled with relief and lightness. “From now on, you don’t need to tell me any news about Julian.” The lingering sense of unreality that had clung to my heart finally dissipated completely. ### Chapter 1

When Julian woke up again, everything around him was a blurry white expanse, and his nostrils were filled with the strong smell of disinfectant. The side effects of the alcohol still lingered, his head felt heavy and foggy, and his entire stomach felt a dull, sour ache. He stared blankly at his surroundings, the模糊的景象逐渐变得清明起来。 Mrs. Albright’s eyes were bloodshot, as if furious. “What kind of behavior is this, wanting to die for a woman like that? She’s just a housekeeper’s daughter. What do you even like about her?” His friends gathered around, earnestly trying to persuade him. “Vivian’s been gone for a month, no news at all. She must have done it on purpose, Julian. Let it go.” Julian had heard these words countless times this past month. He had never listened before, and now he just ignored them. His bloodshot eyes were unfocused and empty, his thin lips pressed tightly, his face full of stubble, showing only stubbornness. Seeing his stubborn demeanor, Mrs. Albright didn’t want to say anything more to him. She didn’t even glance at him, slamming the door as she left. The room immediately fell into a dead silence. His friends exchanged glances, then cautiously spoke again. “Honestly, with your status, what kind of woman can’t you have? Julian, there’s really no need to cling to Vivian like this.” “You should let her see that you can live a better life without her, that you’ll have more women. And she’ll be nothing without you, won’t she just come crawling back in the end?” “Yeah, if worst comes to worst, we can find you a few women who look like Vivian. You can train them, isn’t it all the same? What do you say…” *Bang!* A water glass shattered at their feet, spraying water onto each of their pants. But everyone froze, too terrified to even breathe. Before, seeing Vivian devotedly stay by blind Julian’s side, they had been disdainful. A blind man was nothing but a disgraced heir, yet someone still tried to curry favor with him. But gradually, that disdain turned into envy. Each of them was a powerful family’s son, constantly changing girlfriends, but they had never encountered a woman so genuinely devoted. They couldn’t help but introduce women to Julian, yet even after regaining his sight and becoming a formidable figure in elite circles, he never showed interest in other women, doting on Vivian alone. Until Serena returned. They pretended to advise Julian while secretly creating opportunities for him and Serena. Sure enough, this time, they succeeded. Julian’s love for Vivian proved to be fleeting, and a woman like Vivian should realize that there’s no such thing as true sincerity in the world. Now that Vivian had left, they had expected Julian to completely let loose, but instead, he suddenly went mad. And now, he wouldn’t even let them say a few words. “Get out, all of you! From now on, don’t you dare disrespect Vivian again, or I won’t guarantee what I’ll do to your families!” As his chilling words fell, everyone’s faces instantly paled a few shades. One by one, they made excuses and left the hospital room. The last man to leave, still resentful, closed the door and pulled out his phone, calling his assistant and sending a picture of Vivian. “Look carefully at this woman. Go find someone who looks like her for me. The more similar, the better.” He turned, coldly looking at the closed hospital room door. He wanted to see how Julian could keep up his act now! ### Chapter 1

After staying in the hospital for a few days, Julian decided to check out early. The day after he discovered Vivian had left, he scheduled a divorce with Serena. Now that the 30-day cooling-off period had passed, he needed to get the divorce certificate quickly. That day, Serena had cried and sniffled, but ultimately said nothing. She simply obediently went with him to register the divorce. Her misty eyes fixed on him, telling him to be happy. He had initially been displeased with Serena, but seeing her compliant demeanor, he couldn’t bring himself to blame her, even agreeing not to announce their divorce to the public for the time being. He drove to Serena’s house. As he reached the door, he was about to open it directly when he heard voices from inside. “That bitch Vivian, why didn’t she just die when she saw those texts! What’s with this disappearing act? It’s been a month, why hasn’t Julian gotten over her yet?” “What’s so great about that bitch anyway? Good thing I’m already pregnant. It’s been three months now, and the baby is stable. As long as I tell the Albright family, Julian won’t be able to divorce me, no matter how much he rages.” “Why are you jealous? Of course, I’ve always loved you. Even though this baby is his, the next one will definitely be yours, okay?” The intermittent words from inside pierced Julian’s heart like a series of sharp blades. His breathing grew more ragged, his eyes tinged with crimson. The door slammed open. Serena instinctively hung up the phone, her face paling with panic as she looked at the doorway, forcing an unnatural smile. “Julian, isn’t your body still recovering? Why did you check out of the hospital?” “Who were you talking to?” His thin lips parted, his gaze chilling to the core. Hearing that, Serena’s pupils constricted. She tucked a few stray strands of hair behind her ear, forcing composure. “Julian, I was just on the phone with my friend. She was asking if I liked any new King family products. I just got a little sad thinking about having to part with you, so I just gave her some vague answers.” “What’s wrong?” He let out a cold laugh, taking step after step closer. “Who were you calling a bitch? And who was jealous of you?” Serena’s face instantly turned ashen. She grabbed Julian’s sleeve, her eyes pleading. “No, Julian, you misheard. My friend was just jealous because I’ve been spending all my time with you and not with her. She wasn’t calling anyone a bitch…” Julian ripped her hand away, his eyes involuntarily filling with a chilling coldness. “What exactly have you been doing behind my back?” “Don’t make me investigate. You must have said or done something to drive Vivian away!” She started crying again, just like before, large tears streaming down her face, sniffing and sobbing uncontrollably. “I didn’t! I only found out when you told me. I didn’t do anything, Julian!” But this time, it didn’t soften Julian’s heart. He grabbed her wrist, his expression somewhat menacing. The force in his grip steadily increased, as if he intended to shatter her slender wrist. “Serena, I don’t have that much patience to play along with your act. You’d better tell me the truth, and everything you know, otherwise…” “You know I’m not exactly a soft-hearted man.” ### Chapter 1

Serena’s tears stopped flowing. Her hands hung limply, her face utterly perplexed as she stared at Julian. She didn’t understand why the man’s attitude towards her had changed so quickly. Before, whenever she cried, he would always be the most anxious. But now, his eyes held only indifference. It was as if she could cry until her tears ran dry, and he wouldn’t be moved in the slightest. Serena didn’t dare to admit her provocations against Vivian, nor her deliberate schemes. She tightly sealed her lips, almost desperately praying, “Julian, I didn’t do anything, please believe me! Miss Vivian is such a good person, and you’ve helped me so much. I should be grateful to both of you, how could I ever treat her badly?” “Even though she never liked me, and this tantrum of hers has lasted a bit long… but Julian, please don’t treat me like this just because she left.” As she spoke, she forced out a few more tears. Julian had always been easily swayed, and she could only hope he’d soften towards her and let this matter go. Anyway, he probably hadn’t heard everything. Even if he had, she could just say her friend said those things, and she was merely trying to mediate. As long as he didn’t dwell on these things, and she then revealed she was pregnant with his child, then with their constant interaction and their past affection, she was sure she could make him care only for her! But the man in front of her, abandoning his usual indulgence, let out a cold laugh, a mocking smile spreading across his lips. “You’re truly unrepentant, even at death’s door. After all these years, do you still not know what kind of person I am?” “Serena, my patience has its limits.” With that, he slammed Serena’s head onto the table and clamped his hand tightly around her neck. “Since that’s the case, then I won’t wait for your news and will just tell your family. I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to take you back.” The pain of suffocation was perhaps less than the terror of Julian’s threat. Her mind was filled with the vile grin on her father’s face when he said he would marry her off to that old pervert. Serena was panicking intensely, almost losing her mind with fear. “No, don’t tell them! I’ll talk, Julian, I’ll tell you everything!” Receiving her answer, Julian slowly released his grip. “Speak.” “Cough, cough…” The sudden rush of cold air into her throat made her cough violently, but she didn’t dare stop. She gasped for air, whimpering, “You, you can check my phone!” As she spoke, she fumbled to unlock her phone and handed it over. “I didn’t do anything. You’ve misunderstood.” Serena was secretly relieved that she had deleted all the provocative messages to Vivian earlier. Julian only glanced at it, immediately guessing she was still unwilling and putting on an act. He snatched the phone, intending to send it to a specialist to recover all the data. Hearing Julian on the phone, Serena felt like her world was crashing down. She frantically grabbed Julian’s hand, pleading desperately, “Julian, please believe me, just this once… don’t send it to recover data…” However, this time Julian wasn’t going to give her another chance. He had given her enough chances, but unfortunately, Serena herself didn’t cherish them. Watching Serena collapse to the floor, he spoke in a low voice to his assistant, ordering him to investigate what else Serena had done to Vivian. ### Chapter 1

The investigative findings and recovered chat data were delivered to Julian’s house the next day. He had bought identical replacements for all of Vivian’s former belongings, placing them back in their original spots. Each time he returned, he felt a fleeting illusion that Vivian was still there. But gone was gone. Without Vivian, the entire villa was lifeless and somber, as if it had lost all its vitality. Julian had to do a lot of mental preparation before finally gathering the courage to open the file. The latest entry was a video Serena had secretly filmed on the day Vivian left, showing them lightly kissing at the piano. It also contained accompanying text. “You probably don’t know this, but this is Julian’s favorite place. I won’t film what happens next; I’m afraid you can’t handle it.” “Do you think acting dumb all this time is interesting? How does it feel to be a mistress who knows she’s a mistress? Anyway, you’ll be a mistress in the shadows your entire life. If you’re really desperate, beg me, and I’ll ask Julian to visit you a few more times, okay?” Scrolling further up, more mockery assailed him, filled with countless intimate photos and videos of them. And her SnapChat was filled with countless posts flaunting their affection, all set to be visible only to Vivian. Julian was consumed by towering rage. But when he opened the folder and saw its contents, the angry expression on his face froze, and all the blood in his body seemed to solidify. The ruffians at the auction? Serena had hired them herself! But that day, he had pushed Vivian to the ground, ignored her bleeding forehead, and even forced her to drink alcohol she couldn’t tolerate. He remembered her sorrowful eyes that day, and her soft laugh after hearing his passionate arguments. Julian’s heart gave a violent lurch. The next instant, it felt as if it had been brutally torn open, causing him to break out in a cold sweat from the pain. “Bring Serena here!” His voice was so dark it could drip acid. Soon, Serena was shoved into the room. Seeing the scattered pictures on the floor, she quickly understood, her face turning ashen. She knelt, crawling towards Julian’s feet. “Julian, I’m sorry. I did things I shouldn’t have, but it was all because I love you! It’s precisely because I love you that I spoke those words without thinking. But ultimately, it was only because I wanted to stand by your side legitimately, Julian!” Julian let out a cold laugh, gripping Serena’s jaw tightly, hard enough to leave a bruise on her face. “I told you more than once that you weren’t allowed to mention my help to Vivian. Did you not understand?” “Now that she’s been driven away by you, you must face the consequences!” With that, he coldly flung Serena’s body away. But Serena, her eyes red, crawled back to him, her voice trembling. “Julian, I’m carrying your child! For the baby’s sake, please spare me, okay?” The man in front of her didn’t even spare her a glance. “Of course, I know you’re pregnant. But so what? It’s just a child. I can have as many as I want. What right do you have to bear my child?” “Moreover, getting rid of the one in your belly now will make it easier for you to carry that man’s child, won’t it?” ### Chapter 20 Hearing that, Serena completely panicked. She frantically protected her stomach. The Serena family was no longer what it once was, constantly on the verge of bankruptcy. If she couldn’t keep the child, she would have no way to secure her position as Mrs. Albright. She might even be sent to that old pervert, to be toyed with by such an old creep! Her face was ashen. She instinctively snatched her phone, wanting to call Mrs. Albright. Mrs. Albright valued children above all else; if she knew Serena was pregnant, she would definitely find a way to protect her! He kicked away her phone, which was about to connect, stood up, and used the tip of his shoe to lift Serena’s chin, saying coldly. “Go quietly get rid of the child. I’ve already completed the divorce procedures; whether you agree or not is irrelevant. Don’t think about any more of your schemes.” “When I find Vivian, you’d better sincerely apologize to her. If she’s willing to forgive you, I might leave you a way out.” He gave Serena no chance to refuse. In front of him, she would always be the one begging for favor. Serena collapsed to the floor, utterly undignified, but still desperately clutching her abdomen. As long as the child could be born safely, her future life wouldn’t be too affected. However, Julian wasn’t going to give her that chance. He had already done too many things to betray Vivian. If this child remained, he and Vivian would have no chance at all! Julian’s face suddenly turned ruthless. He directly ordered his bodyguards to drag Serena to the hospital. Serena tried to struggle and resist countless times, crying and begging for mercy, but she was still no match for the bodyguards. She was ultimately pinned down on the cold operating table. As the anesthetic flowed into her veins, she gradually lost control of her limbs, and her eyelids involuntarily closed. When she woke up again, her lower abdomen felt utterly hollow; it had once been her only hope. The anesthetic in her abdomen began to wear off, and excruciating pain racked her body, making even a slight movement incredibly difficult. Tears streamed down her eyes. The child was gone. Her future reliance was completely severed! Julian, meanwhile, returned to the nightclub he frequented, angrily downing drinks in a private room. He hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in what felt like ages. The lingering scent of Vivian in his home grew fainter and fainter; he could barely tell that Vivian had once lived in that villa for so long. He didn’t dare to go back, only escaping to this place, drinking bottle after bottle. “I’m sorry, Vivian… You don’t like me drinking, do you? Come out and stop me… Vivian.” At that moment, a knock sounded at the door. He didn’t bother to respond. Besides him, only his closest friends knew about this private room, but he hadn’t told them he was here today. So, the knocker must have the wrong room. But the knocking continued relentlessly. Seeing he wasn’t answering, they even pushed the door open and walked in. “Get out of…” His harsh words were cut short. He looked up, staring blankly at the girl pushing a cart of drinks and snacks at the doorway. “Hello, did someone here order drinks?” The familiar voice rang in his ears, and his eyes instantly reddened significantly. “V-Vivian?” ### Chapter 21 The young woman in front of him, however, took two steps back, her brow slightly furrowed, as if confused. “Who are you calling?” The similar expression and movements, the almost identical face and voice—for a moment, he truly believed the girl standing before him was Vivian. But her perplexed eyes showed she wasn’t. The girl in front of him was younger, seemingly not even twenty, more like Vivian in her university days. He restrained the urge to pull her into his arms, his voice trembling. “What’s your name?” The girl seemed startled, taking two steps back. “I’m sorry, I think I have the wrong room.” With that, she turned to leave, but Julian grabbed her arm. His hand was still trembling, and warm tears streamed down his face, dripping onto the back of the girl’s hand. The girl hesitated, stopped, and rummaged through her cart, finding a tissue to hand him. “A-Are you okay? You should wipe your face.” When he looked up again, Julian’s eyes had regained their clarity. He looked at the girl in front of him with a complex expression. “Are you working here? Quit. Stay with me. I’ll give you ten times the salary.” The girl, however, recoiled two steps, abruptly shaking off his hand. “What kind of person do you take me for?!” Seemingly extremely angry, she didn’t linger this time, pushing her cart and quickly leaving. Julian was left standing there, staring blankly at the girl’s hastily retreating back. Too similar. His heart hammered. His rational mind screamed at him not to pursue this girl—if Vivian found out, any possibility of them reuniting would be completely destroyed. But a voice kept echoing in his head. *I won’t do anything to this girl. I just want to look at her face. It’s okay. Once Vivian is back, I’ll find a way to send this girl away, ensuring she never appears before Vivian again.* Finally, that voice in his head gradually overpowered his reason. He pulled out his phone and called the owner of the club. Less than half an hour later, the girl’s information was laid before him. Her name was Iris. She was a university student. Her only living relative had suddenly fallen seriously ill, leaving her no choice but to work here. Because the pay was generally higher here, she occasionally received tips. She hadn’t been here long and was only doing simple tasks like serving drinks. “Bring her to me.” Julian’s voice was low. He stared at Iris’s photo in his hand, his gaze distant, as if looking through her at someone else. Soon, the girl stood before him again. She looked at him timidly, a cautious expression he had never seen on Vivian’s face. “Don’t look at me like that. I won’t bite.” Julian’s tone involuntarily carried a hint of impatience. “Stay with me. I’ll cover all your mother’s medical expenses. The only condition is that all your clothes and appearance must be chosen by me.” Iris seemed flustered and helpless. The bodyguard behind her blocked her escape route. She could only look up at the man standing before her. “What do I need to do?” Looking at the face that was eighty percent similar to Vivian’s, he lost himself in thought again. “You don’t have to do anything. Just stay with me.” “I’ll take care of everything for you. Just do as I say.” “And the first thing is…” “Promise me you won’t leave me again, Vivian.” ### Chapter 22 After bringing Iris by his side, he seemed to mention Vivian less and less. He even allowed Iris to become increasingly audacious, to the point where she began updating her daily life with Julian online. The story of the powerful CEO rescuing a helpless girl trapped in a nightclub quickly made her account explode in popularity. Her latest post was even about Julian meticulously preparing a birthday banquet for her, and proposing to her publicly at the event. The proposal video uploaded, her short video account exploded in popularity again. In just two months, she had already become one of the top influencers with tens of millions of followers. The end of the video mentioned their wedding happening in half a month, stating that it would be live-streamed. Time flew by. Half a month passed quickly. He didn’t rush the wedding despite the short timeframe; the entire ceremony was exceptionally luxurious, even inviting many independent media outlets for simultaneous live streaming. The event even made it to the trending topics, ranking first and staying there. At noon, the wedding officially began. All the procedures followed the rehearsal until the officiant asked, “Mr. Julian Albright, do you take this woman to be your wife? Do you promise to stay by her side forever, through wealth and poverty, in sickness and in health?” Julian offered a smile, but his voice was cold as ice. “I do not.” Iris’s eyes widened in disbelief. She rushed forward and grabbed Julian’s hand. “Julian, are you, are you joking?” Julian, however, shook off the woman’s hand. He watched Iris stumble and fall to the ground due to her high heels, then looked down at her. “What right do you have? To marry me? Don’t think I don’t know who sent you.” Iris was instantly speechless. Julian, however, was remarkably calm, signaling for all the live cameras to continue rolling. The live stream chat had already exploded, countless people flooding in to watch the spectacle. The comments were flooded with exclamation marks and question marks. “This woman is a friend—no, I should say, an opponent—who was sent by a friend of mine, found to resemble my beloved. I pretended to fall for it, secretly encouraged her to create an account, and continuously boosted her reach, all for today’s live stream.” “Vivian, I truly know I was wrong. I will only have you as my wife in this lifetime.” “No matter where you are, no matter what you’re doing, I will definitely, definitely find you.” “You promised me you would stay by my side forever.” “To anyone in the live audience, if you know where Vivian is now and can provide relevant information, I am willing to offer a generous reward. Thank you.” Behind him, the large screen that had been showing videos of him and Iris suddenly flickered, then changed to a photo of Vivian. The next second, the live stream was abruptly cut off. Mrs. Albright stood below the stage, her face ashen, hanging up her phone. She was the one who had ordered the live stream cut off. Looking at the man on stage, his eyes filled with a manic desperation, she felt only disappointment. The farce ended. Iris was forcibly dragged away, while Julian, surrounded by his friends, got into a car. “Julian, why did you have to pull a stunt like this? There are many ways to find Vivian. This move has made your mother furious.” Julian, however, leaned back in the seat, smiling as he looked at the many trending topics related to him on his phone. A long-lost smile appeared on his face. “Only this way can more people see it. Netizens will also help me find Vivian. As long as she comes back, nothing else matters to me.” ### Chapter 23 Vivian was about to wash up and go to bed. She had just finished blow-drying her hair when a forceful knock sounded at her door. Vivian was a little stunned and instinctively opened the door. Chloe stood there, her lips pressed tightly together, her expression unusually serious. “Vivian, I think you’re trending in your home country.” With that, she handed her phone to Vivian. The top trending topics all bore Julian’s name, and one of them read: #JulianAlbright’sDeepConfession:VivianWhereAreYou#. The news was plastered with Vivian’s photos, but so far, no one had revealed Vivian’s current location. Vivian’s expression froze. She took the phone, somewhat bewildered, and carefully examined the trending topics, her brow furrowed. Chloe didn’t press her, only looking at Vivian with some concern. Vivian, however, didn’t have much of a reaction. She just sighed softly and acknowledged it. “It’s true. Julian is my ex. After we broke up, I left the country.” At this sudden piece of gossip, the room fell silent for a moment. Chloe spoke after a long pause, in shock. “Huh? If you broke up, why is he making such a big deal? Won’t this cause you trouble?” Vivian rubbed her temples, a little helpless. “It causes some trouble, yes. But I’m overseas, and his family, for certain reasons, can’t leave the country, so it won’t have too much of an impact.” Chloe’s expression, however, grew serious. “Still, it’s better to be careful. He seems so extreme. Someone at your company might recognize you later. Vivian, maybe you should wear a hat or something when you go out these days.” Looking at Chloe, who was genuinely worried about her, Vivian’s heart softened. She took Chloe’s hand and patted it gently. “It’s okay. He can’t leave the country anyway.” Chloe was clearly still worried. She nodded sullenly, even digging out her own hat. “Wear this when you go out. It can cover you up and protect you from the sun.” Vivian took it, wanting to lighten the mood, and joked with her. “It’s just an ex-boyfriend, no need to be so nervous.” “Julian acting so crazy on such an important occasion, he clearly has something wrong with his head. I’ve read a lot of news stories about ex-boyfriends who, driven by love turning to hate, do all sorts of extreme things. Vivian, I’m genuinely worried he might latch onto you and something bad will happen.” Hearing such concern from a girl she had only known for a few months, Vivian’s heart softened. She took Chloe’s hand and gently patted it. “I was with him for many years. Even though he did many things that hurt me, he shouldn’t be that extreme, and he won’t hurt me. Don’t worry.” Though she said this with a smile, Chloe remembered Vivian’s silence when they talked about ex-boyfriends a few days ago, and could vaguely guess that this relationship had caused her significant pain. Chloe didn’t know how to comfort her. Racking her brains, she could only come up with a few words. “It will pass, Vivian. You’ve already climbed out of that mud. Just look forward.” “And we’re here with you! I have many classmates. If he dares to cause trouble, I’ll get them and me to protect you!” Looking at her determined eyes, Vivian’s inner anxiety slowly dissipated. She chuckled. “Okay, thank you, Chloe.” She had survived those difficult times. Now, she was living abroad, surrounded by friends who were willing to protect her. What else was there to worry about? ### Chapter 24 Online, the talk about Julian’s obsession grew, with some aggressive netizens even starting to curse Vivian, believing her to be ungrateful. This continued until the friend Julian had been relentlessly targeting, now on the verge of bankruptcy, began furiously leaking all the inside information he knew. “Vivian is a truly wonderful girl. When Julian went blind for his ex-girlfriend, it was Vivian who stayed by his side, helping him out of his despair, and even successfully waited until he regained his sight.” “But after he recovered, Mrs. Albright’s attitude suddenly changed. She looked down on Vivian in every way, yet Julian protected Vivian, and they seemed quite in love.” “Sadly, Serena came back—that ex-girlfriend of Julian’s. She shed a couple of tears, and Julian, completely brainless, married her, even trying to keep it from Vivian.” “During that time, Serena framed Vivian in every possible way, while the man you all call ‘deeply devoted’ protected Serena, tormenting Vivian endlessly. This is precisely what drove her away, making her disappear without a trace.” “You netizens are foolish, believing whatever people say. Do you really think he’s so devoted? Devoted enough to marry someone else, devoted enough to get someone else pregnant, then, when things escalated, he aborted the child and personally sent his ex-girlfriend to an old pervert’s bed.” “If you love this kind of man so much, I wish you all find ‘true love’ like Julian Albright!” At this, Julian’s carefully constructed image utterly shattered. Although the Albright family was quick to pull the trending topics, netizens’ speed and ability to change their minds were even faster. He was just about to get some information about Vivian, but because of this incident, everyone who had intended to tell him her whereabouts cursed him out and blocked him. Julian went mad, becoming even more aggressive towards his former friend, who was now an enemy, even driving him to bankruptcy and massive debt. Perhaps having completely lost hope, one day, as Julian drove out, his former friend, having acquired a van from somewhere, slammed on the accelerator and crashed into him. The van was so dilapidated that its front was completely demolished, and the friend died instantly at the scene. Julian’s car, due to its superior safety features, meant he wasn’t in immediate danger, but his body suffered immense damage, with organs rapidly deteriorating. His eyes, too, were permanently blinded by the impact, with no hope of ever recovering his sight. When Julian woke up, everything was pitch black. He tried to stand, but his whole body felt light and airy, weak and powerless, as if he had fallen into a cloud. “What’s going on? What happened to me?” Having lost his sight again, he felt utterly terrified. The darkness combined with his past nightmares. He called Vivian’s name, his voice trembling non-stop. But no one answered. Only a bodyguard, utterly fed up with the noise, threw out a comment. “Stop yelling! You still think you’re a big shot? Mrs. Albright said you just need to stay alive. If you can’t handle it, then go kill yourself, just don’t show your face in public.” His voice was hoarse. “What do you mean?” The bodyguard was about to answer, but footsteps approached the door, followed by Serena’s mocking voice in his ear. “You’re blind now. You’ll never recover. Don’t you know what that means in your circles?” “Mrs. Albright rescued me from that pervert, and told me to stay and take care of you.” “After all, you’re still her son…” He couldn’t see the woman’s expression in front of him, only feel her slowly approaching, then reaching out and pinching his chin, with the same force he had used on her when he learned the truth. “Julian, how wonderful. Trash like us, we should go to hell together.” His response was a pained grunt. ### Chapter 25 The next two New Years, Vivian also spent in Australia. Every year, Chloe’s parents would come to celebrate, and Chloe would invite Vivian to join her and her family. After spending time together, their personalities and values aligned well, and their bond gradually deepened. That year, Chloe’s family had already relocated all their business operations to Melbourne and planned to settle there. Chloe even pressed Vivian about her intentions to stay. Vivian had considered this question for a long time. Her few close friends back home had all married and started their own families, and her parents and relatives had passed away years ago. She was alone, without any property or assets. From both a personal and professional standpoint, she was more inclined to stay. Her career was also thriving. She had even saved enough money to buy a house with her own funds. Earlier, she had considered returning the money Mrs. Albright gave her, but Chloe stopped her. The girl poked her angrily. “Are you crazy? You poured your heart and soul into taking care of a blind man for so long. All of this is what you deserve. Why would you give it back?” After that, she never brought up the matter again and began preparing her immigration documents. During this time, Chloe’s family helped her immensely, allowing her to overcome various challenges. With sufficient funds and a strong business acumen, she turned down a promotion opportunity from her boss and opened her own studio. Over the next two years, the studio’s scale continuously expanded, gradually gaining a foothold. Four years later, Vivian successfully met the immigration requirements and obtained her permanent residency. When she returned to her home country to complete the formalities, she met up with friends she hadn’t seen in a long time. Years had passed, and time had flown by, leaving its marks; none of them were still the carefree youths they once were. Everyone’s primary concern, undoubtedly, was her relationship status. Facing their gossipy enthusiasm, Vivian was very open and honest. “I dated someone two years ago, but we broke up due to personality differences. Now, we’re more like business partners. My current boyfriend, we got together at the beginning of this year. He’s two years younger than me, a student at Melbourne University, but he has a very mature personality…” A radiant aura of happiness shone on her face as she recounted her daily love life, sharing photos and videos with everyone. Looking at the affectionate couple on the screen, everyone showed expressions of relief and contentment. They chatted for a while longer, when someone suddenly brought up Julian. “Hey, have you heard? Julian Albright seems to be in a really bad way.” Hearing this, my heart gave a tiny jolt, and I subconsciously looked up. Over the years, I had been busy with work and adapting to my new environment, rarely inquiring about things back home. Chloe might have known something, but out of concern for me, she never brought it up. Although I occasionally chatted with my friend about old times, that period always felt shrouded in mist, not quite clear. And the name Julian felt like a faded old photograph, bearing a yellowed, antiquated feel. I thought he would slowly let go of that relationship, move on, and live his own life. But unexpectedly, he seemed to have led a miserable life, now even clinging to life by a thread? The atmosphere in the room went cold for a moment. A few people cautiously observed Vivian’s emotions. Seeing only shock on her face, everyone’s worries eased, and they relaxed into conversation. “I heard about that too, Vivian. But you said you didn’t want to know anything about him, so I never brought it up. After all, it’s a sad story.” “Sad story, my foot! He reaped what he sowed. He treated Vivian so badly for Serena, then started acting crazy later on, and ended up being crashed into by his friend, losing his sight completely. He’s completely useless. Mrs. Albright, I don’t know what she was thinking, but she actually made Serena go take care of him. Anyway, he’s been kept alive by a thread, but he’s also been tormented quite a bit.” So much time had passed that I couldn’t even remember that woman’s name for a moment. Hearing Serena’s name again, I was briefly stunned. Hearing that the two people who had completely altered the course of my life ended up with such a fate, I felt a degree of melancholy. Even if I was momentarily lost in thought, it was only for a brief second. My phone in my pocket vibrated. I snapped back to reality, pulled out my phone. It was Chloe calling. “Vivian, when are you coming back? My mom made your favorite jam. I’ll bring you two jars when you’re back.” “I’ll be back tomorrow.” Everything from the past was gradually becoming blurry and indistinct. I stared out the window, the sun shining brightly, just as it had on the day I left. When Julian woke up again, everything around him was a blurry white expanse, and his nostrils were filled with the strong smell of disinfectant. The side effects of the alcohol still lingered, his head felt heavy and foggy, and his entire stomach felt a dull, sour ache. He stared blankly at his surroundings, the blurry scene gradually coming into focus.

  • A shared memory found Dink’s husband’s illegitimate daughter

My husband, Julian, and I had been together for ten years—six years dating, four years married. We were a DINK couple, our combined income easily hitting seven figures. To everyone looking in, we were the ultimate power couple, a match made in heaven. But on a flight, I bumped into a complete stranger, and in that instant, a torrent of *her* memories, vivid and raw, showing *her* intimate moments with *my* husband, flooded my mind. In the dim light, two bodies tangled together. Julian’s agonizingly familiar face, pressed against hers, was kissing her with a passion I thought was reserved only for me! His breathless murmur echoed in my head, “Valerie, you captivate me more than Elara ever could.” I snatched my hand back, as if I’d been burned. The woman smiled at me. I stiffened, adjusting my seat, my fingers trembling uncontrollably. For ten years, Julian had been nothing short of devoted, attentive to my every need. Everyone always said we were the model couple. Who would’ve thought I’d run straight into his mistress on my flight home from a business trip? The second the plane landed, I powered up my phone and called my lawyer. “Mark, I need you to draw up divorce papers for me.”

“Ms. Stone, are you sure?” Mr. Harrison, my lawyer, replied almost instantly. “Absolutely.” My fingers trembled slightly as I typed, but I sent it anyway. Stepping out of the jet bridge, my eyes immediately found Aaron. He was holding a bouquet of my favorite champagne roses, standing right at the front of the arrivals crowd. “Jasmine, over here!” He waved, his smile radiant. Ten years. He was still incredibly handsome, impossibly charming. Dressed in a sharp suit, standing tall, his gaze on me was as focused and loving as ever. If I hadn’t just seen intimate images of him with another woman, I might still be unwavering in my belief in our relationship. I took a deep breath, plastered on an impeccable smile, and hurried towards him. “Didn’t I tell you not to bother picking me up? You’re so busy with work.” “No matter how busy I am, I always have time for my queen.” He naturally took my suitcase, wrapped an arm around my waist, and pressed a kiss to my forehead. Normally, I would have sweetly kissed him back. But now, I just felt a wave of nausea. I pretended to fix my hair, subtly evading his kiss. My fingers brushed his hand, accidentally activating my touch memory ability. In the airport parking lot, that woman was sitting in the passenger seat. Aaron had barely buckled his seatbelt before he was passionately kissing her. “God, I missed you so much,” he panted. “After she’s asleep, I’ll meet you at our usual spot.” I yanked my hand back, my heart pounding. “What’s wrong?” Aaron asked, noticing my sudden shift, his voice laced with concern. “Nothing. Just didn’t get much rest on the plane.” I forced a smile. “Let’s just go home.” In the car, Aaron enthusiastically recounted amusing anecdotes from the past few days, as attentive and thoughtful as always. It was laughable. I’d always clung to the principle of mutual trust, never once digging into his memories. Back home, Aaron mysteriously produced an elegant gift box. “Honey, guess what I managed to snag? Memory Bites!” I raised an eyebrow and took the box. These new Memory Bites from a tech company had absolutely blown up online. They claimed to use cutting-edge tech to store snippets of memories, letting you relive precious moments with every bite. Even at a staggering $1500 a box, they sold out within minutes of hitting the shelves. “Candy that stores memories? That’s a bit far-fetched, isn’t it?” I deliberately scoffed, a plan already forming in my mind. “It’s just a gimmick, but it’s kind of fun, right?” Aaron chuckled. “It’s the holiday season, so it felt right.” I opened the box. Inside were six intricately shaped candies, each inscribed with the word “Memory.” “Well, should we try them?” I picked up one, offering it to him. “You go first. Really concentrate on your happiest memory.” Aaron laughed. “Jasmine, you actually believe this stuff?” “Just for fun,” I insisted. He reluctantly took the candy, closed his eyes, and a blissful smile slowly spread across his face. In that moment, I almost believed he was reliving some sweet memory of us. I reached out, my fingertip lightly brushing the hand holding the candy. My mind was flooded with images of a strange kitchen. Aaron and the woman from the plane. All their tender moments together. Cooking and eating, feeding a cat, walking a dog. Under a snowy mountain, they cuddled, watching the sunrise. In a bedroom, two bodies intertwined. He whispered, calling her Vivian. I snatched my hand back. Even with the psychological preparation, seeing those images firsthand still twisted my gut, making it almost impossible to breathe. “So? See anything?” Aaron opened his eyes, asking with faux concern. 2. I swallowed the pain, forcing a weak smile. “Nothing at all. Told you it was just a marketing gimmick.” I took the candy he had used and bit into it. “The taste isn’t bad though.” Aaron visibly relaxed, pulling me into a hug. “Right? I told you it wasn’t that magical. But if you like them, I’ll try to snag more next year.” I leaned into his embrace, feeling the familiar yet now alien warmth of his chest. Ten years of a child-free marriage. We were both executives at a publicly traded company, earning millions a year, the envy of everyone – a perfect power couple. Ha, how utterly ridiculous. The next morning, Aaron woke up. “Hey, babe, I have a business trip today.” For ten years, he’d gone on a business trip every month or two, and I’d never once suspected a thing. “Okay, I packed your suitcase already.” I handed him his luggage, feigning reluctance as I hugged him tight. “How many days this time?” “About three days.” He kissed my forehead. “I’ll miss you.” As we embraced, I deliberately prolonged the contact, wanting to see what was truly going on in his mind. The train station exit. The woman named Vivian Lee threw herself into Aaron’s arms, and they kissed passionately. Next, a supermarket. They pushed a cart together, like a typical couple, picking out groceries. Finally, a bedroom floor, their clothes scattered everywhere. I pulled away, suppressing the rising bile, and smiled. “Text me when you arrive.” After seeing Aaron off, I immediately put on a hat and a face mask, rushing to the ticket gate. “Ma’am, your ticket?” The ticket agent asked politely. I showed my e-ticket on my phone and walked through. To avoid Aaron spotting me, I waited until the very last minute to board, choosing a seat where he wouldn’t see me. All the way, my mind was a chaotic mess. Touch memories couldn’t be used as court evidence. I needed solid proof of his infidelity. I contacted a private investigator. “Hello, I’m on train G761. Please have a car ready at the destination exit. I’ll send you the target’s photo.” “Got it, Ms. Stone.” After exiting the station, I quickly got into the back seat of the waiting car, buckling my seatbelt. Aaron soon appeared at the exit, standing by the roadside, seemingly waiting for someone. A short while later, a black Honda pulled up in front of him. He smiled and got in, his movements natural and practiced. “Follow that Honda,” I instructed. “Be careful not to be seen.” Mr. Miller, the detective, was an experienced pro, expertly weaving through traffic, always maintaining a safe distance from the target. Eventually, the Honda pulled into an upscale gated community. “This community has tight security. It’ll be hard to get in,” Mr. Miller said. “It’s fine. Knowing the location is enough.” I snapped a photo of the community name and building number. “For the next few days, please keep an eye on them and gather evidence.” “Don’t worry, Ms. Stone.” Over the next three days, the photos and videos Mr. Miller sent showed Aaron and Vivian living like a married couple—cooking, taking walks, shopping, intimately. The most ironic part was a photo of Aaron taking Vivian’s picture, that same focused expression that had once belonged solely to me. The third day, Aaron suddenly called. “Jasmine, why haven’t you called me these past few days?” I immediately switched to a sweet, clingy tone. “Oh, I’ve been a bit busy, you know. When are you coming back?” “Tomorrow,” he said. However, that same afternoon, I saw Vivian dropping him off. A flicker of confusion hit me. If he’s not going back until tomorrow, why is he leaving so early today? 3. The same car-following routine, but Aaron didn’t go home. Instead, he went to another gated community. My heart sank. Was this man seeing *another* woman? The door opened, and out stepped my mother-in-law. I froze. Wasn’t she supposed to be back home? Then, a little girl, around seven or eight years old, ran out, sweetly calling, “Daddy!” My world spun. I had to clutch the wall to keep from falling. A daughter? Aaron Davies actually had a daughter? Ten years of a child-free marriage, and he’d never once shown any desire for children. And all this time, he already had a child outside our marriage! I stumbled back to the car, my whole body shaking. Ten years of marriage. I thought we truly loved each other, that our choice to be child-free was for us, for our careers. Turns out, he just didn’t want to have kids *with me*? I went home early, pretending to know nothing. Aaron arrived on time, bringing me a gift – a Tiffany necklace. “How was your trip?” I helped him take off his jacket, asking casually. “It was okay, just tiring.” He massaged his temples. “What about you? You didn’t call me at all these past few days. That’s not like you. Don’t you love me anymore? Tell me, do you? Do you?” He wrapped his arms around my waist as he spoke. “Of course not… The merger case has been really tricky lately, I’ve been swamped. Of course, I love you the most.” I leaned in and purposefully kissed his cheek. “And you? Did you miss me?” “Of course, I did.” He leaned in to deepen the kiss, but I deftly turned away. “Hungry? I’ll make you something to eat.” That night, Aaron tried to get intimate, but I pushed him away, citing exhaustion. He looked displeased but didn’t force it, only complaining about how our married life wasn’t as passionate as before. I turned my back to him, biting my lip hard, terrified that if I opened my mouth, I’d blurt out every accusation. A few days later, the detective called me. He said only my mother-in-law picked up and dropped off the child every day; he’d never seen Vivian or any other woman. This didn’t make sense. Where was the child’s mother? Just as I was puzzling over this, the Memory Bites suddenly hit the trending topics again. A quirky online influencer, a month after the candies were released, crunched the numbers and discovered that divorce filings had spiked dramatically, showing an unprecedented surge compared to the previous month. Suddenly, the internet went wild. Some claimed they really saw hidden memories of their partners through the candies, while others firmly believed it was just a coincidence. That evening, Aaron came home looking somewhat uneasy. “Jasmine, when you tried the Memory Bite that day, you really didn’t see anything?” he asked, testing the waters. My heart skipped a beat, but my face remained calm. “No, why? Wasn’t it just a gimmick? Now that the holiday season is over, and sales for Memory Bites are slowing down, they’re just trying to clear inventory, right?” He didn’t look entirely convinced. “How about you try again? Inject a memory into one for me?” I smirked internally, but on the surface, I agreed. “Fine, I think it’s silly, but if my husband wants to play, I’ll humor you.” I picked up a Memory Bite, pretended to focus intently on injecting a memory, then handed it to him. Aaron nervously took a bite, savoring it carefully, then visibly relaxed. “Okay, I was silly too. There’s really nothing.” He put his arm around me and whispered in my ear, “Honey, your birthday is coming up. What do you want this year?” I suppressed a wave of disgust and deliberately asked, “Aaron, we’ve been child-free for ten years. I’m suddenly thinking I might want a child now. What about you?” He froze for a moment, then chuckled. “Why the sudden thought? I think our life together is perfect, just the two of us. I don’t want anyone disturbing that.” The words almost stole my breath. He didn’t want a child with *me*, but he had one with someone else? 4. I wasn’t playing his game anymore. I took action immediately. The next day, I went to the girl’s school entrance, pretending to accidentally bump into her. “Oh, I’m so sorry, sweetie, are you okay?” I steadied the girl, quickly and subtly taking a strand of hair from her head, carefully placing it into a pre-prepared sealed bag. “I’m fine, ma’am,” the girl said with a sweet smile, then ran towards her waiting grandmother – my mother-in-law. That night, I secretly took a few strands of Aaron’s hair. The next day, I delivered both samples to a paternity testing center. Three days later, the results came back: the test confirmed Aaron was the girl’s biological father. The evidence was irrefutable. It was time to confront him. I arranged to meet Aaron at an upscale restaurant. This was the very place he had proposed to me ten years ago. “Why did you pick this place for dinner tonight?” Aaron asked, smiling, clearly in a good mood. I directly pulled out the paternity test report and slid it across the table to him. “Your daughter is very cute.” Aaron’s smile froze instantly, his face turning ashen. “Jasmine, I… this…” I sat opposite him, watching him with a cold smirk as he struggled to string together a coherent sentence. “Ten years of marriage. I thought we truly loved each other, that our choice to be child-free was for us, for our careers.” I spoke with a calmness that even surprised myself. “Turns out, you just didn’t want to have kids *with me*?” “That’s not it!” Aaron desperately grabbed my hand. “I love you, Jasmine! I really do! I just didn’t want you to suffer, having a child is so painful!” “So you chose to have a child with someone else?” I pulled my hand away, crossing my arms over my chest. “That was an accident!” He lowered his voice. “I was drunk, I really didn’t know. By the time I found out, she was already pregnant. It was my mom who insisted on keeping the child.” “And Vivian Lee? Was that an accident too?” I asked coldly. Aaron’s eyes widened. He clearly hadn’t expected me to know so much. “Jasmine, let me explain…” “Go ahead, explain.” I leaned back in my chair, arms crossed. “I’d love to know how you manage to love so many women at once. Does it make you feel accomplished?” Aaron took a deep breath. “Vivian was my first love; we were together in college. We broke up, and then I met you. But we reconnected a few years ago…” He reached for my hand again. “But I truly love you, Jasmine! You’re my wife, the one I chose to spend my life with!” “So she was just a fling?” “I’m sorry, I admit I love her too, but it’s different!” Aaron’s words were unbelievable. “She needs me; she can’t live without me. But you’re so strong and independent, I know you can understand.” I couldn’t believe my ears. Yet, he really did know me well, knowing that hiding anything now would be pointless. After seeing so many men who, upon being caught cheating, threw all the blame onto the woman, I felt a strange, grudging respect for his honesty. But I continued my questioning, because I still needed more recorded evidence. “Understand what? Understand your bigamy? Understand that you’ve been deceiving me for ten years?” “I wasn’t deceiving you!” he said urgently. “I just wanted both of you to be happy. Vivian lacks security, I just wanted to reassure her. But I truly can’t live without you, Jasmine. I admit I’m greedy; I cherish the different needs and satisfactions you both bring me.” I was shaking with anger, yet I couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh. “How can you be so utterly shameless?” 5. “Jasmine, I know I messed up,” he suddenly dropped to his knees, drawing curious glances from other diners. “But I genuinely love you. You are the most important person in my life! I’ll break things off with Vivian, just please, please forgive me this one time!” I looked at the man I had loved for ten years, feeling an overwhelming sense of unfamiliarity. “Let’s get a divorce, Aaron. Let’s end this cleanly.” “No! I absolutely won’t agree!” He suddenly stood up, his face turning dark. “Jasmine Stone, think this through. A divorce won’t benefit either of us. You’re a CEO of a publicly traded company. Once news of our divorce gets out, the stock price will plummet! Your reputation will also suffer!” Ha! He was actually trying to threaten me? I sneered. “Fine. Go ahead and try me.” I immediately moved into an apartment near my company, beginning our official separation. Aaron sent countless messages every day, ranging from apologies and repentance to threats and warnings, trying every trick in the book. During a get-together with friends, I confided part of the truth to my best friend, Chloe Bell. “Oh my God! Aaron actually has a secret child outside?” Chloe gasped, covering her mouth. “I never would have pegged him for that kind of man!” “And even more ridiculous, he also has a college ex, and he used our shared assets to buy her a house.” I wore a bitter expression, waiting for her comfort. But Chloe’s reaction was completely unexpected. “You know, to be honest, I’m actually a little envious of you.” I stared at her, dumbfounded. “Envious of what? Of him cheating and having a child with someone else?” “Honestly, a man like Aaron is hard to come by these days,” Chloe shrugged. “He’s rich, handsome, treats you well, and you don’t even have to go through childbirth.” I looked at her in disbelief. “Are you saying I should just accept my husband’s cheating and his secret child?” “Not accept, but I mean, at least he puts you first, right?” Chloe chose her words carefully. “Some things, you just pretend not to know. Look at me, I know Mark sometimes strays, but we have two kids, a mortgage, car payments… What would I do if we divorced? As for things like those Memory Bites, real or fake, I’d never try them. Why bring myself unnecessary heartache?” I fell silent. Chloe continued, “You two don’t have kids tying you down, so divorce is easier. But will you really find someone better? At least Aaron is still willing to treat you well. And as for men outside, which one doesn’t cheat?” That night, I couldn’t sleep. Was I really being too dramatic? I posted a brief summary of my situation on an anonymous forum, and the replies only confused me further.

  • The Unforgettable Goodbye

After seven years of practically worshipping Julian, he finally agreed to be with me. Everyone said Julian only kept me around to kill time, a mere distraction. Even he believed it. So, when he abandoned me again to face three drunk men, rushing off to meet the one who truly held his heart, something inside me snapped. I was done chasing him. His voice was a dark, menacing growl as he warned me, “Don’t play games with me. I hate women who do that.” He was so sure I’d never leave him. But that arrogant heir to a powerful family, he knelt before me, time and again, crying and begging me not to leave when I was about to go abroad. Our first kiss happened one night when he was drowning himself in booze. The proud scion was absolutely hammered, sitting alone in a private room at a bar. I heard him call out Serena’s name, asking why she had left him. Julian, Serena, and I had practically grown up together, but I was always the one everyone overlooked. Outsiders always whispered that Julian and Serena were childhood sweethearts, practically inseparable. I was just a perpetual third wheel to their perfect story. Julian had burst into my orphanage when I was a child, saving me just as the abusive director was about to lay hands on me. After that, the Preston family adopted me, and I’d always been incredibly grateful for their kindness. At the tender age of first love, meeting the boy who once saved me inevitably sparked something. Like any heroine in a teenage romance novel, I fantasized that Julian was the lead in my world. But when I saw Serena, I finally understood. I was nothing but an ugly duckling; Julian’s true leading lady was someone else entirely. I forced myself to bury my feelings for Julian, doubling down on my efforts to be good to him, hoping to repay their kindness. Three years ago, Serena went to study abroad, leaving just Julian and me from our trio. We started spending more time together, getting closer. But I always knew that a part of his heart would forever belong to Serena. Just like now, even drunk, he still called out her name. Silently, I helped him up, spoon-feeding him a special hangover remedy I’d brought. After a while, Julian seemed to improve, stirring awake from his stupor. He watched me clean up without a word, sitting quietly like a child who had done something wrong. “Cassie,” he suddenly said, “will you ever leave me?” I didn’t know how to answer, so I stayed silent. Julian suddenly reached out, pulling me into his arms. He stared at me intently, his eyes holding an emotion I couldn’t quite decipher. I finally managed to speak, “If I could, I hope we never have to be apart.”

I whispered it, so softly. Maybe Julian heard me, his eyes shining intensely in the dark room. What happened next was a blur, a natural progression. Lips met, teeth grazed. He held me fiercely, as if trying to merge me into his very bones, yet his kisses were incredibly gentle. I stayed with him in that private room, drinking all night. His eyes, still hazy with drink, traced my face. His fingers, surprisingly rough, brushed over the beauty mark near my eye. He just stared at me for a long, long time. Suddenly, a smile touched his lips, as if he’d remembered something amusing. “You like me that much, huh?” he chuckled. “Is this your first kiss? Be my girlfriend.” I agreed. No flowers, no grand confession. Just like that, we were together. A month passed, and my relationship with Julian felt unchanged. I still went through my daily routine of classes and studying, and Julian still frequented the same party spots. Then, one day, Julian stopped me after class. He stood there, hesitating for a long moment, before finally telling me, “Come to a party with me tonight. I want to introduce you to everyone.” “And make sure you wear that white dress I gave you.” My fingers brushed the smooth, elegant fabric of the white dress, and I felt a pang of emotion. The girl staring back from the mirror didn’t quite suit this dress; she wasn’t poised or tall enough, and she certainly lacked that innate elegance and air of superiority. I sighed, but remembering Julian’s instruction, I reluctantly put it on. I stepped into the waiting car, heading to the party. Like Cinderella at midnight, riding in a pumpkin carriage to meet her cherished Prince Charming. But how could reality ever be like a fairy tale? It was a chilly autumn night in the city. I wore the thin white dress, feeling utterly out of place in the decadent VIP lounge of the upscale club. The air was thick with smoke, expensive liquor, and designer perfumes, suffocating me. I sat beside Julian, feeling like a carefully dressed doll. He casually draped an arm behind me, lazily introducing me to his friends as his “official” girlfriend. The others snickered, their gazes unsettling. Julian didn’t say anything, just lifted his eyes to me with a bored look, as if I were an insignificant object. But his fingers gently hooked the hem of my dress, tightening as if testing my reaction. I lowered my gaze, picked up the lemonade on the table, and took a few sips. Then, slowly, I refilled Julian’s glass with liquor, my movements so practiced it was as if I’d done it a thousand times. I had long anticipated a scene like this. Over the years, I’d been mocked behind my back countless times by these “friends,” yet Julian had never once intervened. I could only try my best to suppress my emotions. But a heart is made of flesh and blood, and a dense, prickly ache spread through me. Unaccustomed to the environment, I excused myself to the restroom. When I returned, I heard a burst of laughter erupting from the private room, some of it clearly directed at me. “Hey, Julian, you’re something else! Did you actually convince her to wear Serena’s dress?” “Don’t be ridiculous, that’s not Serena’s dress. Julian takes such good care of Serena’s clothes. That’s just a cheap knock-off. Look at that poor girl, so thrilled with it, it’s hilarious!” Through the crack in the door, I saw a new girl had taken my seat. Julian didn’t object, just casually smoked. “Alright, enough. Watch what you say.” “Remember not to let Serena hear about this.”

The laughter around them grew louder. Someone bolder asked, “What if this… devoted follower… hears us and runs off, Julian? Aren’t you worried?” I watched Julian slowly take a drag from the cigarette offered by the girl next to him, then slowly exhale. His voice wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough for me to hear: “Don’t worry. You couldn’t get rid of her even if you tried.” My heart plummeted. He was right. How pathetic I was, sacrificing my dignity to repay some old kindness. I pulled out my compact mirror, seeing the slight redness in my eyes, and tried to compose myself. Pushing the door open, I found an empty corner and sat down. No one noticed me. The center of this party would always be Julian and Julian alone. As the party ended, Julian suddenly called out to me, a lazy smile playing on his lips. “Cassie, go grab me a pack of cigarettes from the convenience store, would you?” I nodded, more than eager to escape the suffocating atmosphere. Next to the club was a deep, narrow alley, often where drunk people passed out. On my way back, I ran into a few drunk men emerging from the alley. I tried to avoid them, to walk around, but one of them grabbed my arm anyway. My body trembled slightly, and I instinctively slapped his hand away. A powerful wave of nausea churned in my stomach, and for a moment, I was back in the orphanage, pinned against the wall by the director. The stench of alcohol wafted over me, making me wrinkle my nose, and my legs trembled even more. I yelled out, “Don’t come near me! I’ll call someone!” But the drunk men didn’t care, still trying to lay their hands on me. “Look at this little slut, coming out of the club. What, you can serve the rich but not us? How much for a night?” As they shoved me, I used my bag to push the three men away and ran into the alley. But they followed close behind. I quickly pulled up Julian’s contact on my phone. The ringing tone sounded like a countdown to my doom. *Please, Julian, pick up my call.* Just as the call was about to disconnect, Julian finally answered. From the other end of the line, I heard the whistling of wind and the distinct giggling of a woman. That familiar giggle immediately brought her owner to mind: Serena. She was back. *Julian is with Serena right now? But she wasn’t at the party earlier?* Before I could process the chaotic thoughts in my head, Julian spoke first, cutting me off: “You’re taking too long. We already left. Forgot to tell you.” “As my girlfriend, you should be more understanding, shouldn’t you?” I didn’t answer Julian’s question. Instead, my voice choked with tears, “Julian… help me… I’m being…” Julian scoffed, “Alright, Cassie, what are you trying to pull? That trick doesn’t work on me.” “You’re just mad I didn’t take you along, right? Do you really need to be so dramatic?” “If you want to stay my girlfriend, don’t annoy me. My patience has limits.” With that, he hung up, not giving me a chance to reply. The abrupt dial tone buzzed, sending a chill through my fingers. My limbs remained stiff, stuck in the position of holding the phone, but my hand slowly dropped, powerless. Serena was back. I was no longer needed. That was Julian’s answer. Despair seeped into me. Looking at the dress I was wearing, I suddenly had an urge to rip it to shreds. I hid in a cardboard box next to a trash can in the alley, surrounded by garbage and debris. Stains smudged my pure white dress. Terrified, I huddled in the dumpster, fearing they would find me any second. The narrow alley echoed with the three drunk men’s lewd jokes about how they would “split” me once they caught me. I don’t know how long passed before they finally left. Curled up, I spent the night there. The intense focus of my fear finally relaxed, giving way to extreme exhaustion. At dawn, I dragged my weary body back to my apartment, covered in the stench of rotten garbage. Lying in bed, I sobbed uncontrollably. This time, the person who saved me from my childhood trauma wasn’t someone else. It was me.

  • The Lifeguard Husband and the Fragile Intern

My husband’s sister, Chloe, went for a swim in the ocean and accidentally drowned. My husband, Asher, a senior lifeguard who’d saved countless lives, instead sent his fragile female intern, Luna, to retrieve her. Dressed in a revealing bikini, she pouted at him, batting her eyelashes. “Oh, Asher,” she whined, her voice small. “I’m such a coward~ What if I’m too scared to go in?” Asher wrapped an arm around her slender waist, completely ignoring Chloe, who was desperately fighting for her life in the churning waves. He then meticulously re-tied Luna’s safety rope, *again*, before finally allowing her to enter the water. But Luna didn’t even swim five yards before she violently yanked the safety rope, screaming and crying for Asher to drag her back to shore. To calm her down, Chloe lost her critical rescue window, drowning in the unforgiving ocean. Asher pulled Luna behind him, shielding her, then glared at me, his eyes sharp with warning. “When the police arrive, you’ll tell them your sister died in an accident. You’ll sign the death certificate, no fuss.” “There were warnings issued, and she still went swimming. Wasn’t she practically asking for it? Everyone has to pay the price for their mistakes, and Luna just graduated. She can’t have a blemish on her record.” “Luna?” I echoed, my voice laced with disbelief. Seeing the impatient scowl on Asher’s face, a sudden, chilling realization hit me. He actually thought it was *my* sister, Clara, who had drowned. A bitter laugh escaped my lips. “That’s a document, I’m afraid, I simply cannot sign.”

Brandon shot me a furious glare. “Why can’t you sign it? It was an accident!” “I’m warning you, don’t even *think* about trying to turn this into some big payout scheme. Remember, I own half of this rescue company. If things get messy, we’ll both go down.” Chloe wriggled free from his embrace, sobbing pathetically. “Harper, I’m so sorry, it’s all my fault. I couldn’t save your sister.” “Brandon, please don’t fight with Harper because of me.” Brandon pulled her into a comforting embrace, his expression filled with concern. “Chloe, this has nothing to do with you. Her sister just *had* to go swimming at this exact time. Who can you blame when someone goes looking for trouble?” Then he turned to me. “Harper, Chloe is crying like this, and you can’t even offer a single word of comfort?” “You *have* to sign this document. If the police ask, you tell them Chloe did everything she could, but the ocean waves were too strong, and she couldn’t save her.” This man was truly hopeless. When I found Kimberly drowning, I remembered that Brandon’s company was responsible for rescue in this area, so I quickly called him. Seeing him arrive with Chloe, I thought he’d personally dive in to save her. I never imagined he’d send an intern who had only recently learned to swim. It was their delay that caused Kimberly’s death by drowning, and now he wanted me to admit it was an accident? But since Brandon was Kimberly’s only living relative, if he agreed, I wouldn’t argue. I scoffed. “I’ll do whatever you want, but I doubt the police will accept *my* signature.” “How about this: you write out a confirmation yourself first, and we can hand it to them together when the police arrive.” Brandon looked at me with contempt. “You’re so ignorant. That’s *your* sister. Only you, as a direct relative, can sign the confirmation. Anything I write has no legal effect, okay?” “Besides, I’ve told you before, don’t bother me with your family’s problems.” He had indeed said that. A few days ago, I received a strange package. When I opened it, I found a swimsuit. Kimberly claimed it was hers and threatened me not to tell Brandon. She said the waves had been strong recently, making it dangerous to swim, and Brandon didn’t want her going. Later, when I was washing and hanging it, Brandon saw it anyway. Seeing Kimberly’s warning glare, I had to tell him I bought it for my sister, Skylar, who was planning to go swimming in the ocean. He just coldly said, “Go ahead, I don’t care. Just don’t come crying to me if anything happens.” It seemed he was a man of his word today.

Seeing I was unmoved, Brandon scooped Chloe into his arms and said impatiently, “Wait here. I’ll go to the rescue station and write it for you. It’ll also give Chloe a chance to change, so she doesn’t catch a cold.” With that, he ignored me, carrying Chloe with long strides towards the rescue station. Chloe looked up, a smirk playing on her lips as she met my gaze. I hoped Brandon would be just as calm when he found out the one who died was his own sister. After he handed me the handwritten confirmation, the police car arrived. Since the body had already been washed away, and there was no surveillance footage or other witnesses, the officers looked at me hesitantly. Before they could say anything, I directly handed Brandon’s handwritten accidental death confirmation to the police. “The search and rescue company here is owned by my husband, he also led the rescue, and the drowning victim was his sister. With this accidental death confirmation, there shouldn’t be any problem, right?” The police probably didn’t expect things to go so smoothly. After asking Brandon a few simple questions about the rescue, they left. I didn’t want to stay there either. After picking up Kimberly’s changed clothes on the beach, I prepared to leave. But I hadn’t walked more than a few steps before Brandon stopped me. He held out his hand. “Give them to me.” “What?” I looked at Brandon, puzzled. He pulled a lighter from his pocket, threatening to set the clothes ablaze. Even though Kimberly and I rarely got along, seeing this, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of anger. “Brandon, don’t you know the custom here? Even if we can’t find her body, we’re supposed to bury her last worn clothes as a symbolic grave, a cenotaph, so her spirit can rest.” “If you burn these clothes now, do you want her to never find peace even in death?” Chloe looked at me mockingly. “A cenotaph? Harper, are you okay?” “I heard people say that only those who’ve done too many bad things end up drowning in the ocean.” “Someone like your sister, a real menace, doesn’t deserve a peaceful end even in death, let alone a cenotaph.” Brandon nodded in agreement. “Your sister was always defiant, and she’d give me attitude every time I asked your dad for some money. What a piece of work! If you ask me, even in death, she won’t settle down. To avoid trouble, I have to burn her clothes today.” “To make sure her spirit is gone for good, so she can’t cause any more trouble.” Their synchronized cruelty made my heart pound furiously in my chest. Even if it was *my* sister, he couldn’t be this vicious. I pointed a finger at his face and yelled, “Isn’t she your sister? Aren’t you afraid of karma for talking about her like that?” I clutched the clothes and turned to leave, but Brandon clamped his hand around my throat. He stared at me with chilling malice. “Don’t push your luck, Harper. You’re leaving those clothes here today.” I glared back at him. “Brandon, if you touch me again, my dad will never give you another dime.” At that, Brandon violently shoved me into the ocean. “What else does your dad have besides his dirty money? What kind of man can’t even have a son?” With that, he snatched the clothes and then kicked me hard. I struggled out of the water, staring blankly at Brandon. The man who had pursued me for ten years, from high school until now, had changed completely just one month after our wedding? And was now even physically abusive? Chloe whined playfully at Brandon. “Brandon, be careful, you almost fell after that kick.” Brandon pulled her into his arms, comforting her softly. “Don’t worry, your man here is agile. Hitting a woman is a piece of cake.” “Alright, let’s go burn those clothes.” Chloe giggled. “You carried me all that way, you must be tired. Just sit back and watch, I’ll burn them.” Brandon sat on the sand, filming her with his phone. Chloe pinched Kimberly’s tank top, her face full of disgust. “This girl dressed pretty provocatively, didn’t she? That low cut, like she *wanted* men to stare.” She then picked up Kimberly’s skirt, sniffed it, and sneered, “Ugh, there’s even a man’s scent on this skirt. How many times must she have been with someone?” She said, holding the clothes up to the camera. Brandon played along, praising her. “Chloe, you’re so smart. You notice even the smallest details.” “We need to film all this. If Harper, that bitch, tries to cause trouble, we’ll post it all online and ruin her and the Davis family’s reputation.” Chloe smiled at me. “Harper, Brandon is just worried about being taken advantage of. You understand, right?” It was Brandon’s own sister. If *he* understood, that was all that mattered. While they weren’t paying attention, I subtly sent my location to my bodyguards. Just as Chloe was burning Kimberly’s clothes, a bright light shone from the distance. “What are you doing?” Seeing the large and imposing bodyguards approaching, Brandon recoiled in terror. I looked down at him, my voice cold. “Brandon, we’re getting a divorce.”

The words had barely left my lips when Brandon jumped up. “Harper, you’re divorcing me over a dead person?” “I’m a lifeguard, not the Grim Reaper. Isn’t it normal not to be able to save everyone?” I replied calmly, “I’ll have my lawyer contact you. Let’s part ways amicably.” Brandon glared at me, his teeth clenched. “Chloe and I both tried our best. I know you’re upset, but after ten years, can you really just throw it all away?” Chloe dropped to her knees, repeatedly bowing her head and pleading with me. “Harper, I don’t want to ruin your relationship with Brandon. If you don’t divorce him, I’ll let you hit me, yell at me, whatever you want.” Brandon pulled her up, his heart aching. “Chloe, don’t beg her.” Then he looked at me again, his tone turning harsh and icy. “Chloe is just an intern. If you have a grievance, take it out on me. Why are you trying to scare her?” “Harper, your family doesn’t have a son, and one of your two daughters is already dead. Your father still relies on me, his son-in-law, for appearances. Aren’t you afraid of being looked down upon if you divorce?” I scoffed. “Brandon, ever since we got married, your living expenses, your clothes, even the money to start your company—none of it came from anywhere but my family.” “You’re like a leech, clinging to the Davis family and sucking us dry. And now you’re claiming *you’re* holding the Davis family together? I don’t know where you get the nerve.” Brandon’s face flushed, then paled, then flushed again at my words. Catching Chloe’s gaze, he finally exploded in anger. “Fine! I’ll give you what you want.” “But don’t expect me to ever help your family with anything again.” With that, he set the half-burnt clothes on fire again, unleashing all his resentment towards me onto Kimberly’s remains. By the time my bodyguards rushed over, only half a shoe was left of the pile of clothes. I could only take that half-shoe back and buy a burial plot, preparing to make a cenotaph for Kimberly. The day before the funeral, I sent the location to Brandon, asking him to come and say his final goodbyes to his sister. To my surprise, the first person to arrive wasn’t Brandon, but Chloe. She stormed in furiously, armed with a baseball bat, smashing everything. Even the tombstone was shattered into four pieces. I stared at the scene, my heart heavy with grief. Just then, Brandon finally strolled in, a smug look plastered on his face as he surveyed the scene. “Excellent. A slut like that deserves this fate.” Chloe’s eyes glinted mischievously, a wicked grin spreading across her face. “Oh, yes. A slut certainly can’t stand loneliness. Let’s give her something a little more stimulating.”

With that, she pulled a tablet from her bag, cued up an adult film, and placed it in front of the grave. “Harper’s sister must have loved watching these. Think of it as her final send-off.” I struggled to control my burning rage, asking Brandon in a cold voice, “Are you just going to stand there and watch your sister’s grave be desecrated? Watch her be shamed even in death?” Brandon replied dismissively, “What shame? This is just catering to her preferences.” “Catering to her preferences? Who told you my sister liked this?” “This is a cemetery. Respect for the dead, Brandon. No matter how much you hate me, you should show some respect to the deceased.” “Putting a pornographic film in front of a grave? Is that something a decent person would do?” The last few sentences were shouted so loudly that my voice was starting to crack. Chloe’s eyes welled up instantly, tears spilling down her cheeks. “Brandon, what do I do? Harper is mad at me, she’s yelling.” Brandon pulled her into his arms, glaring fiercely at me. “That kind of trash your sister was, if her death can make Chloe happy, then it was worth something.” If he knew he was entertaining his mistress at the funeral of the sister he cherished most, I wondered if he’d still be so calm. Thinking this, I couldn’t help but let a cold smile play on my lips. “Fine, just have fun.” Brandon looked at me suspiciously, about to say something, but Chloe cut him off. “Harper, as women, we should listen to our husbands. Don’t always act so high and mighty just because your family has money. It’s not a good look.” These words made Brandon nod in agreement. “Chloe’s right. If you just change those awful habits, we don’t have to divorce.” At that moment, other families holding funerals began to arrive at the cemetery. They all looked surprised when they saw our area, and some even called the cemetery administrator over directly. “What are you doing here?” The elderly administrator yelled furiously. “This is a cemetery, not some illicit place! Aren’t you afraid of retribution for disturbing the spirits of the dead?” Brandon shoved the administrator to the ground, looking at him contemptuously. “You’re just like my wife, you don’t know what’s good for you.” “The one who died here was promiscuous in life, always messing around with men. We’re just trying to make her happy, what’s wrong with that?” “Besides, I bought this plot, and the deceased is my wife’s sister. I can do whatever I want with it. If you have an opinion, keep it to yourself.” I chimed in, smiling. “I did buy this plot, but whose sister is buried here, I wouldn’t know.” Chloe tugged on Brandon’s sleeve, feigning surprise. “Brandon, has Harper completely lost her mind? She’s actually fantasizing that her sister isn’t dead.” Brandon gently stroked her back. “Perhaps, but the dead cannot come back to life…” “Sis!” His words were cut off by a familiar female voice. Brandon froze the moment he saw who it was. I smiled sweetly and walked forward. “Skylar, you’re here to say goodbye to Kimberly too?”

  • After I retired from surgery, the interns panicked.

As the legendary surgeon, the moment I announced I was putting away my scalpel and stepping off the operating table for good, the entire surgical department erupted in excitement. They even threw a celebration. But only Serena White, the intern Mark brought in – the one hailed as a once-in-a-generation medical prodigy – approached me, a look of unease on her face. “Dr. Chen, even though you’ve made a few mistakes in your recent surgeries, your skills are still there. We need you, and so do countless patients.” She spoke with such earnestness, if I hadn’t been the one involved, I might have actually fallen for it. I turned and walked away, my face expressionless. In my past life, she was an intern who followed me into surgery. But every time, right in the middle of an operation, my body would suddenly go out of control. And every time, Serena would step in, taking over and flawlessly completing the surgery. After a few such incidents, she became the medical genius everyone praised, while I was branded a fraud, someone who stole her reputation. Desperate to prove my true capabilities, I took on a world-class, complex surgical case, despite immense pressure. I spent sleepless nights researching materials, searching for similar cases, and developing a surgical plan. But the moment I confidently stepped into the operating room, my body once again betrayed me. Serena flawlessly completed the surgery again, and her surgical plan was exactly identical to the one I had meticulously devised. She became the miracle worker everyone talked about, and I became an incompetent quack, scorned by all. Unable to bear the blow, I ended my life with the very scalpel I once mastered. When I opened my eyes again, I was back to the day Serena first arrived at the hospital. ………. “The patient suddenly had a massive hemorrhage, and our Dr. Chen was so scared she just froze. Good thing Serena was there, otherwise, we would have been in big trouble.” “And she still calls herself a legendary surgeon? Doesn’t she feel any shame? Always acting so high and mighty. Well, now with Serena, a true genius, as a comparison, how can she even show her face in the operating room again?” Familiar mocking voices yanked me back to reality. That’s when I realized, I had been reborn. Ignoring their taunts, I rushed straight to Neurology for a full body check-up. The results, as expected, showed I was perfectly normal. I suspected Serena was the source of the problem. To test my theory, I immediately scheduled another surgery. This time, I refused to let Serena into the operating room with me. The surgery started smoothly, but at the most critical moment, my body once again went out of control. Just then, Serena, as if she had predicted it, quickly walked in and finished the rest of the surgery. Coming out of the operating room, Dr. Thompson, the Vice Dean, called me into his office and said to me with grave concern, “Valerie, have you been too tired lately? How about I give you a few days off to rest?” “You don’t have to worry about the hospital. I think that young woman, Serena White, is quite good; she’s handled these last few surgeries beautifully.” “You’re not getting any younger. Perhaps it’s time to consider taking a step back and enjoying your well-deserved retirement.” I stared at Dr. Thompson, my former mentor and teacher, in disbelief. He should know my capabilities better than anyone. Was even he losing faith in me now? My eyes instantly welled up. “Teacher, even you don’t trust my skills anymore?” Seeing my distress, Dr. Thompson sighed deeply. “You’re my student; of course, I know your level. It’s just, considering your performance in these last few incidents, I think it’s time for you to step down.” I left the Vice Dean’s office, utterly devastated, and returned to the surgical department. Everyone was gathered around Serena, asking her for advice on emergency solutions for unexpected surgical complications. She was confidently explaining everything, holding nothing back. But what she was saying was all the experience I had accumulated over many years. How was this possible? I had painstakingly summarized these insights from thousands of surgeries, never formally teaching them to anyone. Everyone murmured in envious admiration. “Serena, you must be a legendary medical genius. You’ve only been in a few surgeries, yet you can anticipate so many emergencies and handle them so perfectly. Is this truly the difference between people?” Just then, Mark spotted me through the crowd, a sneering smile twisting his lips. “Serena is the real genius, unlike some people who, after performing so many surgeries, still get scared and lost when a patient bleeds heavily. I don’t know how she still has the nerve to call herself a surgical maestro.” Serena looked over, following his gaze, her eyes brimming with undisguised triumph. “Mark, don’t talk about Valerie like that. She’s still your wife, after all.” “I came here to learn from Dr. Chen, not to steal anything from her. But since I have a talent for surgery, I should make good use of it to save more patients.” Her words earned her a chorus of praise and applause. Initially, everyone had been skeptical of Serena’s medical genius, but as she successfully performed one critical rescue after another, they gradually became convinced. Even the hospital’s top management held her in high regard, giving her priority for training. She became a miracle worker, sought after by all. My husband and colleagues, who once flocked around me, had all abandoned me to fawn over Serena. I could understand this; after all, in such circumstances, following Serena would easily grant them more resources and compensation. “Serena, you’re too generous! Dr. Chen can’t even compare to you. In the last surgery, she was afraid you’d steal her thunder and deliberately kept you out of the operating room. In the end, didn’t you have to clean up her mess anyway?” “Exactly! When I asked her for anything, she wouldn’t say a word, claiming she could only teach me if I encountered it during surgery. I think she just didn’t know how and was brushing me off.” “Serena, you’re the future hope of our surgical department. We’re all counting on you.” … I coldly watched the group of people and Serena, who was surrounded by them. In my past life, it was this kind of betrayal that pushed me to end my life with a scalpel. And in doing so, I had only cleared the way for Mark and Serena. Reborn, I would take back everything that was mine. I silently turned and walked away, not returning to the home I shared with Mark. Instead, I went back to the apartment I had bought before we got married. I couldn’t understand where things had gone wrong. But one thing I was certain of: this whole situation was connected to Serena. Even if she was a so-called medical genius, it was impossible for her to come up with such detailed emergency protocols without extensive practical experience. More importantly, every time she took the spotlight, my body would suddenly go out of my control. What exactly had Serena done to me? As I thought this, a name suddenly flashed in my mind. Yes! That’s it! I could tell him what was happening to me. Maybe he would know how to fix it. I quickly found his phone number and dialed it directly. He answered quickly. I thoroughly explained the strange things happening to me and Serena’s abnormal behavior. He pondered for a moment, then said he would give me an answer in three days. He advised me to avoid contact with Serena during these three days. With his assurance, I felt much more at ease. I immediately requested a week’s leave from the hospital. I had planned to relax for a few days. But while I was avoiding Serena, she seemed determined not to let me go. On the third morning of my leave, Mark suddenly called me. His tone was incredibly hostile as he demanded, “Valerie Chen, why didn’t you tell me you were taking leave?” I had no patience for him anymore. “What does my leave have to do with you?” Mark on the other end of the line paused, surprised. But it was only for a second. Then, he irritably ordered me, “Never mind that. Get to the hospital now.” I scoffed. “I’m on vacation. If you need something, find someone else.” With that, I decisively hung up. I lay back down on the bed, just about to drift off to sleep again. Suddenly, someone started pounding loudly on my door. At the same time, they were shouting my name. I looked through the peephole. It was Mark and Serena. I didn’t want them to disturb my neighbors, so I irritably opened the door. “Mark, what do you two want?” Seeing the door open, he grabbed my arm without a word and started pulling me out. I forcefully shook him off. “Are you out of your minds? If you have something to say, say it here. Otherwise, I’m calling the police.” Mark’s face turned livid. “You’re coming back to the hospital with me now. There’s a surgery today that only you can perform.” I looked at him, his expectation so blatant, and burst out laughing mockingly. “Isn’t Serena a medical genius? Why doesn’t *she* go? Why call me?” Mark’s face was filled with impatience. “Valerie Chen, I’m giving you one last chance. Are you coming back to the hospital with me or not?” “No!” I refused, cold and decisive. He let out a cold laugh, clearly infuriated. “You’re forcing my hand.” Then he pulled out his phone and shoved it in front of me. A video clip was playing on the screen. In the video, a woman was trying to hand me an under-the-table payment, which I refused. The next second, she burst into tears, kneeling and kowtowing repeatedly in front of me. I remembered this incident. The woman’s son had suffered a sudden cerebral infarction, and I had saved him. After the surgery, the woman wanted to give me a bribe to thank me for saving her son’s life. When I refused, she immediately knelt down and kowtowed. I looked at Mark, confused. “Why are you showing me this?” Mark’s lips twisted into a challenging smirk. “Don’t be so hasty, just keep watching.” The video clip ended, and the woman who had kowtowed to me appeared on screen. Dressed in ragged clothes, she tearfully accused me in front of the camera, “It was this Dr. Valerie Chen who caused my son to be paralyzed!” “She refused to operate on my son because she thought my bribe was too small, making us miss the best time for treatment!” “But I truly couldn’t afford more money. It’s my fault for being useless and harming my son!” The video ended there, and Mark threatened me with a cold sneer. “If you don’t come back with me obediently today, I’ll post this online and completely ruin your reputation!” I looked at Mark in disbelief. I never imagined he would stoop to such lengths to frame me, all for Serena. “Fine, I’ll go back with you.” Since you want me back so badly, I’ll humor you. Just don’t regret it later. The moment I stepped through the hospital entrance, Dr. Harrison, the Head of Surgery, grabbed me and hurried me inside. “Valerie, you’re finally here! We just got a car crash victim with an intracranial hemorrhage and an unruptured aneurysm. This is a complex case, and you’re the only one in this hospital who’s ever done this specific procedure. Get ready quickly!” I asked for the patient’s detailed condition; for now, their life wasn’t immediately at risk. I looked at Serena, who was about to change into scrubs, and calmly stated, “Dr. Harrison, you know my recent situation. I’m really not suitable for surgery right now.” Dr. Harrison heard me and seemed to recall something, a flicker of hesitation crossing his face. But he couldn’t think of anyone more suitable than me. Seeing the sweat forming on his brow, I tentatively suggested, “Dr. Harrison, don’t rush. I can find someone to come over, we should still have enough time.” At this, Serena, whose face had been full of anticipation, turned pale. Without waiting for Dr. Harrison to speak, she hastily objected. “No way!” Both Dr. Harrison and I looked at her. Her expression was a little unnatural. “What I mean is, the patient might not be able to wait. Since Dr. Chen is here, let Dr. Chen do it.” Dr. Harrison looked at me, somewhat hesitantly. “Valerie, why don’t you just go ahead?” Before I could even speak. Serena’s eyes turned red with urgency. “Dr. Chen, I know you’re still angry with me, blaming me for stealing your thunder. But you really can’t just stand by and watch someone die!” As she spoke, her eyes welled up with tears. Seeing her cry, Mark’s face filled with distress, and he glared at me, his expression even darker. “Valerie Chen, that’s enough! I never knew you were such a cold-hearted person!” “Just go and perform the surgery obediently, and let Serena be your assistant.” I looked at him coldly. “How am I cold-hearted? I know my own condition. I’m not suitable for such a complex surgery right now.” “And I already said I would find someone to replace me for this operation.” My words left Mark speechless. At this point, Serena suddenly burst into tears and knelt before me. “Dr. Chen, I was wrong. I can resign. I’ll never bother you again.” “But the patient in the operating room truly can’t wait. Please, I’m begging you for him, save him!” Her actions instantly ignited the anger of everyone present towards me. “Is this even a doctor? She’s a butcher!” “How can she be so cold-blooded, letting someone die without helping?” Then, someone shouted, “I just saw online that someone exposed her! She refused the surgery because the family didn’t give her an under-the-table payment!” This statement caused a massive uproar, pushing the crowd’s anger to its peak. No one listened to my explanations anymore. The scene instantly erupted into chaos, and someone rushed forward to hit me. “Kill this heartless, unethical doctor!” “Kill her!” I was surrounded by the crowd. Someone kicked me hard in the knee. “You beast, get down on your knees!” I cried out in pain and collapsed, clearly hearing the sound of bone cracking. Then, someone grabbed my hair and slammed my head onto the ground. “You greedy, murderous, unethical doctor, hurry and kowtow to confess your sins!” Blood instantly gushed from my forehead, and my vision blurred repeatedly. Powerless to resist, I could only curl up on the ground, covering my head, as everyone continued to hit me. Fists rained down on my body relentlessly. Then, someone kicked me hard in the abdomen. I instantly coughed up a mouthful of blood. Only then did security guards arrive and control the angry crowd. Dr. Harrison and a few colleagues haphazardly helped me, who was on the verge of fainting, to my feet. Looking up, I saw the triumphant glint in Serena’s eyes. She wanted to force me into this surgery, then use her trick again. She wanted to step on me to gain higher honors, while I would be utterly crushed into the mud, never to rise again. She was paving her path to glory with my blood and flesh. “Dr. Chen, please agree, otherwise, we can’t save you either!” Serena’s expression was earnest as she pressured me again. I silently swept my gaze across the faces of everyone present: some angry, some sneering, some just waiting to see me fail. Among them were patients I had saved. But now, they were all glaring at me as if I were their enemy. Just then, my phone rang. I answered, listening in silence, a mocking smile unconsciously twisting my lips. Seeing this, the crowd grew angry again, ready to charge at me. “She’s still smiling! She’s cold-blooded, not even human! Kill her!” But then, I suddenly bowed deeply to everyone. “I’m sorry, but as you can see, my current condition makes it impossible for me to perform surgery.” As I spoke, I raised my right hand, which was now bruised and bloody from being stomped on, my fingers dangling limply. The eyes of those who had just hit me flashed with a hint of panic, but they quickly regained their indignant composure. “We hit you because you’re greedy and murderous, unfit to be a doctor!” “Since everyone believes I’m unfit, then I hereby announce that from today onwards, I am stepping down, and will never again enter an operating room.” I calmly looked at Serena, whose face was slowly turning ashen. I wanted to see, without me, how she would continue to be her medical genius.

  • My blind husband cheated on me with his nurse. So, I married his father and became his stepmother.

For eight long years, I was married to Caleb Hayes, the man who was blind, all because I felt bound by a debt of gratitude. But the moment his cornea transplant bandages came off, he was instantly smitten by the nurse who removed them. To pursue Serena Vance, he recklessly disregarded every hospital protocol, letting an intern perform a critical surgery herself – a move that nearly cost a life. When I finally filed for divorce, I was hit with the crushing truth: our marriage certificate was a fake. He didn’t even spare me a glance, his voice chillingly flat as I confronted him: “You orchestrated the crash that took my sight. I, in turn, systematically tormented your youth for eight years. Seems perfectly fair, wouldn’t you say?” Blinded by rage, I unleashed a damning video of Serena Vance bullying others at his extravagant engagement party, shattering her pristine image overnight. That very night, Caleb Hayes brazenly replaced our son, Leo’s, life-saving medication with the cheapest saline solution he could find. As if that wasn’t enough to satisfy his cruel heart, he then had Leo and me shipped off to a war-torn country, leaving us to fend for ourselves, or die. The next time we met, his eyes fell upon my wedding gown, and he sneered, “All these years, and you’re still clinging to the pathetic dream of marrying me!” Little did he know, I – and his formidable stepfather, the man who truly pulled all the strings – were the actual stars of this new wedding.

“Still so high and mighty, even when you’re trying to make amends, Aurora.” “Too bad you’re out of luck. Blair and I are getting married any minute now.” Julian Thorne pulled the shy Blair Sterling closer, then shot me a contemptuous glance, as if daring me to find a flicker of sadness on my face. I was in my heavy wedding gown, ready to walk to the stage and announce my *own* wedding reception was abruptly called off. My fiancé’s flight was delayed; he wouldn’t make it back today. Seeing me move, Julian reached out, blocking my path, a frown on his face. “Aurora, are you deaf? I’m talking to you.” The murmuring guests instantly fell silent, turning to stare. “I remember Leo’s condition – only the specialized medication developed by Thorne Pharmaceuticals can keep it in check.” “Aurora,” he sneered, swirling the drink in his hand, then deliberately splashing it onto Blair’s gown right in front of me, “if you get down on your knees and *lick* that stain clean off her dress, maybe I’ll consider helping you.” When he saw me bend down, the fury in his eyes intensified. He gritted his teeth. “Looks like Leo means a lot to you!” I shook my stinging palm, my voice suddenly piercing. “Julian Thorne!” “Leo is *your son* too!” Julian’s lips curved into a smirk. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with his thumb. “Oh, really? I was blind back then, couldn’t see anything. For all I knew, you were messing around with anyone you pleased.” A wave of humiliated rage surged through me. I clenched my fists. Knowing this wasn’t the time to argue, I took a deep breath and walked to the center of the stage. “Due to unforeseen circumstances, today’s wedding reception has to be temporarily canceled. My apologies, everyone.” Before I could finish, the microphone was knocked over. Julian yanked my wrist hard, the atmosphere around him dropping instantly. “Aurora Vance! This is the Thorne family’s wedding! Don’t you think it’s childish to try and get my attention this way?” I looked at him calmly, a small laugh escaping my lips. “Is it?” “Don’t you know your stepfather, Marcus Blackwood, is marrying *me*?” My words landed like a bomb, and the entire room erupted in gasps. Everyone knew the story: how the former golden boy went blind saving me. And how I, a brilliant, groundbreaking surgeon, gave up my career and returned to family life for him. Blair quickly stepped forward, trying to smooth things over. “Ms. Vance, if you truly still love Julian, you shouldn’t be publicly humiliating the Thorne name in front of all these people.” “I’m not bringing up how you tried to frame me with that fake bullying video back then, switching out your face for mine. But now, for my sake, can’t you just—” *Agh!* “Aurora, are you insane!” Julian rushed to Blair, checking her reddened face, glaring at me with fury. “Your son’s specialized medication? The Thorne family would rather trash it than sell it to you!” “And don’t forget, Aurora, your parents are still in the nursing home under my name.” Seeing my silence, he assumed I was scared. A sneer touched his lips. “Get down and apologize.” “What choice do you have now?” I tilted my head back, forcing the tears away, suppressing the ache in my eyes. “My parents?” I roared, “My parents were used for drug trials and *killed* by your precious Blair Sterling!” “Julian Thorne, Leo almost died because of your so-called punishment. You sent Leo and me to a war-torn country where we nearly got blown to pieces.” “You think I still have feelings for you?” I scoffed, pulling out a brand-new marriage certificate and thrusting it at him. “This ‘old woman’ is now your legal stepmother!” “You touch me, and your stepfather won’t let you get away with it!” His fingers trembled as he snatched the certificate from my hand, shaking his head in disbelief. Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through his temple. Unfamiliar memories surged, and amidst the terror, the fragmented recollections began to overlap with my face.

“Mrs. Gable, please arrange for the guests to leave shortly.” I removed my veil, tapping on my phone to send a message to Marcus, but it vanished into thin air. This sight, to Blair Sterling, only solidified her belief that I was putting on an act. She spoke, her voice laced with saccharine sweetness and thinly veiled digs. “Ms. Vance, this is a Thorne family event. I don’t think you have the authority to order the staff around, do you?” “I get that you’re angry, but how could you debase yourself like this just to spite Julian? Mr. Thorne is nearly fifty, Aurora. Don’t throw away your dignity over spite, getting involved with a man like that…” Blair batted her eyelashes, her words dripping with fake sympathy. Julian’s knuckles were white as he swallowed a pill. Once he composed himself, he stared at me like a predator locking onto its prey. “Blair Sterling, I’ve already cleared the path. What’s wrong? You still haven’t managed to marry Julian?” The air instantly congealed, like a frozen glacier. It was utterly silent. Blair’s face contorted with rage, yet she couldn’t utter a single word in rebuttal. The incident where she almost *killed* someone back then, though Julian had suppressed it, meant the Thorne family, with their long-standing legacy in pharmaceuticals, would *never* accept someone like her into their ranks. I let out a soft laugh and confidently strode towards Marcus’s study, knowing the way intimately. As I walked away, Julian kept his gaze fixed on me, afraid to confirm the suspicion forming in his mind. Soon, the guests began to leave. Just then, I received a call from the hospital: Leo was having an episode! “I’ll be there as fast as I can!” I hung up, barely thinking as I sprinted to the garage. Just as I opened the car door, Blair blocked it, her eyes red and swollen. “Ms. Vance, I know you hate me and think I stole Julian away.” “But have you ever considered that the person in Julian’s memories was always me? The eight years of happiness you had with him—weren’t they just stolen years that belonged to me?” I frowned, pushing her hand away. I didn’t have time for her melodrama right now. But she wouldn’t let go, grabbing my wrist and suddenly dropping to her knees in front of me. “Aurora, I’m begging you.” “Please stop bothering Julian. We’ve already missed eight years; can’t you just let him go…?” “Are you done or not!” I pushed her away coldly and quickly slipped into the car. “Aurora Vance!” Blair crumpled precisely into the arms of Julian, who had just arrived. He glared at me, then froze when he saw the familiar license plate. He asked, his voice hoarse, “This car… why is it with you?” I scoffed, a humorless laugh escaping me. “I’m Marcus’s wife. Where else would his car be?” With that, I pressed the ignition. As I prepared to rush to the hospital, Blair suddenly shrieked, her entire body trembling violently. She backed away, then knelt on the ground, kowtowing and begging for mercy. “Aurora, I’m sorry, I won’t fight you for Julian anymore, please don’t hurt me…” Classic trauma response. Julian instantly flew into a rage. He yanked me out of the car, pulled me violently, and shoved me to the ground. “Julian Thorne, Leo’s having an episode! I need to get to the hospital *now*!” He remained unmoved. I took a deep breath and called Mrs. Gable. “Mrs. Gable, Julian is blocking me, not letting me leave. Marcus said that if anyone tries to stop me, the bodyguards are to intervene immediately!” Mrs. Gable hesitated for a long time, not saying a word. Suddenly, a strange noise echoed from the garage. All the bodyguards from inside the mansion stood in orderly rows behind Julian. He pinched my chin, sneering. “Aurora Vance, that bastard Marcus married the heiress of the renowned Vance medical dynasty, not some stray Phoenix like you!” “There’s a limit to how much you can lie. Looks like the punishment I gave you back then was still too light.” Soon, the bodyguards blocked all my exits. Thinking of Leo’s pale face, I grabbed Julian’s hand and pleaded. “Leo really needs me. Please let me go to the hospital, okay?” “I’m begging you, Julian Thorne…” Our eyes met. He laughed softly, lifted my chin, and in my hopeful gaze, his voice was as cold as ice. “Aurora Vance, you make a mistake, you pay the price.” “Hurting Blair crosses my line!”

I was confined to the Thorne mansion by Julian. Seeing Marcus’s message that he had landed, the anxiety in my chest finally eased. It seemed what he set out to do was successful. Catching sight of the gentle expression on my face, Julian snatched my phone. He tried his birthday, then all our anniversaries, but it eventually locked itself. “Julian Thorne, illegal detainment is a jail offense.” He toyed with my phone, then violently pinned me beneath him. “Aurora Vance! Would it kill you to just give in once?” I froze, his bloodshot eyes reflected in mine. “Yes, I hurt you back then, but if you hadn’t orchestrated that car accident, I wouldn’t have been blind for eight years trying to save you.” He sighed, a note of weariness in his voice. “Aurora, why can’t we ever just *talk* properly?” “You know, for years, there’s been a blurry figure in my mind. And Blair was the first person I saw when I regained my sight. I just wanted to figure out who that person in my head was, but you, you’ve hurt her time and time again.” “She’s innocent. Nothing happened between us.” Sensing eyes outside the door, I met Julian’s intense gaze and smiled. “I believe you.” Julian’s face lit up, his eyes instantly filled with lust, and he lowered his head to kiss me. *This* was the man’s ‘punishment’? It was absolutely disgusting! I closed my eyes, counting down from three. Before I could even reach one, a startled cry came from outside. “Master, something’s wrong! Ms. Sterling was agitated again and tried to kill herself!” Julian released me with lightning speed. As he opened the door, he hesitated, a conflicted look on his face. “Aurora, it was your bullying in high school that left her with such severe trauma.” “I can’t just ignore her.” I said nothing. This flimsy lie, only he would believe it. In high school, I was rarely at school, spending every spare hour, 24/7, studying at the hospital. How would I have time to bully someone I didn’t even know? Soon after, crashing sounds came from outside. Gradually, the noise subsided, replaced by the maids’ suggestive whispers. “Looks like Master and Ms. Sterling will be making things official soon. I wonder when we’ll have a little master running around.” Recalling Julian’s earlier closeness, a wave of nausea washed over me. I looked around. The furnishings were the same, but there were more pill bottles. Remembering Julian swallowing pills earlier, I sharply noticed something was off. He was taking what looked like ordinary pain relievers, but these were for treating neurological conditions. The only person who could have access to these was Blair Sterling. “Julian Thorne, if that’s how it is, then I’ll send you a grand gift.” After swapping the pills, I walked to the window. I knew this place well; even if I jumped, I’d only suffer a fracture. My immediate priority was to get to the hospital. I tied up my hair and opened the window. As I braced my arms and tried to hoist myself up, *clatter!* My body suddenly lost its balance. I flexed my twisted ankle, getting back up. The air around me was abnormally cold. Perhaps it was instinct, but I stepped towards the foul-smelling room ahead. Yet, just a step away, A familiar, chilling voice came from behind me. “Aurora, what are you doing?”

Seeing my silence, Julian’s demeanor darkened again. My peripheral vision scanned the surroundings, but there was nothing to help me escape. I hid the disgust in my eyes, then looked up at him with a smile. “I didn’t realize you had a hobby of setting up secret rooms.” “Julian Thorne, it’s the twenty-first century. This kind of thing is quite creepy.” Noticing my unnatural ankle, he let out a helpless chuckle, then swept me into his arms and carried me out. I leaned into him slightly in his embrace. Julian’s entire body tensed instantly. Seeing that he hadn’t grown suspicious, I slowly curved my lips. My little test just now seemed to have no effect on him. But judging by his reaction, he was clearly very familiar with this secret room. After that day, I learned my lesson. I stopped openly defying Julian, and instead, subtly provoked Blair Sterling from time to time. One day, I again proposed visiting Leo. Julian, surprisingly, didn’t refuse. Instead, he dressed very formally. “Aurora, today will be a very special day.” I didn’t understand. I watched him take a large handful of pills before leaving. By my count, this should be his fifth course of treatment. With enough external stimulation, he could be forced back to his original state. Finally, the suffering he inflicted upon me was about to come back to bite him. “Ms. Vance, wait a moment.” Seeing my frown, she rattled the vegetable juice in her hand. “I haven’t thanked you for the drink you sent me. I love it.” “And my baby loves it too.” Her boasting was obvious, instantly sending Julian into a panic, especially since he’d kept this from me. He quickly looked at me, wanting to explain. “Aurora, about this…” I smiled, shaking my head. “I trust you.” Perhaps it was sheer confidence, but Julian firmly believed I still loved him. All the way, he subtly observed my expression, until we got into the car. Since his eyes were now fine, I was driving. Following the route I remembered, I headed towards the outskirts. Halfway there, Julian received a SnapChat call from Blair. Her voice was filled with pain. “Julian, I’m so sorry…” “Ms. Vance definitely didn’t mean to hurt my baby. My stomach hurts so much… Julian, I think our baby might be gone…” *Bang!* Julian’s mind felt like it exploded. He glared at me fiercely. So, that was Blair’s plan. “Stop the car!” “Turn around right now! Blair needs me!” I pressed my lips together, silent. This quickly angered Julian, and he reached to snatch the steering wheel. With a screech of brakes, the car slammed into the guardrail. Julian, clutching his dizzy head, unbuckled his seatbelt and jumped out, getting into a taxi. The very next second, *BOOM!* The car exploded, engulfed in flames. The familiar scene sent sharp pains through Julian’s head. He stared at the burning car. Suddenly, he stumbled out of the taxi and ran towards it, collapsing to his knees with a guttural roar. “I remember everything! I remember it all…” “The person I forgot was Aurora… it was eighteen-year-old Aurora, not Blair Sterling…” His eyes unfocused, he walked towards the burning car. Just as his outstretched hand was about to touch it, A cold metallic sound. Handcuffs, glinting, clamped around his wrist. A police officer’s voice was frigid. “Julian Thorne, you’re being arrested in connection with a murder.”

  • After I was thrown into the zombie pile, my disabled fiance went crazy.

That night, my biological parents finally found me. Isabelle’s fiancé, Caleb Blackwood, had gone out to battle. He returned with his legs shredded by zombies, leaving him paralyzed. Doctors had delivered a grim verdict: he’d never stand again. My parents, utterly devoted to Isabelle, forced me into a proxy marriage, tying me up and dragging me to the altar. But Isabelle wasn’t one to give up easily. She caused a dramatic scene on our wedding night, crying to Caleb that I had usurped her place as his fiancée. Caleb, swayed by her poisonous whispers, gripped my chin. “A useless nobody with no abilities? You think you’re fit to be my wife?” After injecting me with a potent zombie virus strain, he ordered me to be thrown out to the zombie dogs. From then on, torturing me became his twisted pleasure. He claimed his legs were useless, yet his thirst for thrill drove him to force me to leap into deep ravines to dig for zombie cores with my bare hands, or throw me into clusters of mutated flora to retrieve antidotes. He’d only crack a faint smile when he saw me, battered and bruised, collapsing to my knees. Isabelle would feign concern, “Sister, don’t blame Caleb. His legs hurt, that’s why he’s so irritable.” But still, I stayed by his side, unafraid of death. All because I’d signed a secret pact. Until one day, ignoring my desperate pleas, he tied me to an armored vehicle and careened through a raging zombie horde. After a barrage of reckless, bone-jarring maneuvers, I collapsed, unconscious, my body already betraying the life within. I found Eleanor Blackwood, Caleb’s grandmother, my voice flat, empty. “The term is up. Please, let me live.”

“Eleanor Blackwood, you promised that if my life were ever threatened, you would let me go.” My face was a ghostly white, my body desperately weak after the miscarriage. My voice was barely a whisper, a fragile thread of sound. Eleanor, still unaware of the full truth, couldn’t hide her dismay at Caleb’s increasingly deranged behavior. Her tone was filled with a mix of helplessness and an attempt to soothe me: “Seraphina, deep down, Caleb isn’t a bad boy. It’s just losing his parents so young, and now his legs… it’s made him bitter and volatile. We’ve been so fortunate to have you by his side all these years.” As she spoke, she rose and walked to a strongbox, retrieving a metallic case. Inside, a single energy core glowed with a pure, high-purity blue luminescence. “Seraphina, this miscarriage has taken a heavy toll on your body. I’ve cultivated this core for ten years. Consider it compensation.” I stood my ground, silent, then simply held out my phone to her, playing a secretly recorded video. Caleb’s chilling conversation with Captain Rex echoed clearly from the device. “Warlord, all your orders have been carried out. As you saw from the surveillance, the armored vehicle’s brutal impact and jostling in the wasteland caused the lady to bleed uncontrollably. The baby inside her certainly couldn’t have survived.” Caleb’s icy voice responded: “Well done. Her terrified, near-death expression was incredibly satisfying to watch. And the child inside her was never meant to be. This outcome is nothing less than she deserves!” Isabelle nestled against Caleb, her voice barely concealing a triumphant laugh: “Does that mean you didn’t want this baby, Caleb dearest?” Caleb sneered: “I only want *our* child. No other woman is worthy of bearing my offspring.” Immediately after, the two embraced, entangled in a frantic, sickening kiss. Their sounds were utterly unbearable. Eleanor Blackwood’s face flushed with fury. The hand gripping her cane trembled as she took several deep breaths, trying to compose herself. “Caleb… how could he become like this? This is simply outrageous!” Her voice was laced with an incredulous, heartbreaking pain. “Even the most savage beast doesn’t turn on its own offspring! How could he do something so monstrous?” I closed my eyes, my heart aching so fiercely I could barely breathe. That nightmare was etched deep into my mind, refusing to fade. After Caleb’s injury, with hordes of zombies amassed outside the city, panic had gripped everyone. That day, Captain Rex had unveiled his new, heavily modified armored vehicle, a true engineering marvel. Caleb pulled me into his arms, whispering in my ear: “With danger looming, the Warlord’s wife must stand united with her husband, and selflessly serve the people in their time of need.” I had no time to react, a potent wave of unease washing over me. A cruel smile twisted his lips, and then he announced to the gathered crowd: “My leg injury hasn’t healed, so my wife has bravely volunteered to personally accompany the armored vehicle out of the city to scout the dangers ahead.” Panic seized me. I frantically tried to refuse: “I can’t. I’m pregnant. This mission is too dangerous, I can’t risk it.” Hearing my refusal, his face instantly turned cold. His hands clamped down on me, pinning me, making it impossible to move. I struggled with all my might, but he still dragged me towards the armored vehicle. His men held me down in the passenger seat, my hands tied behind my back. Caleb then cinched my seatbelt impossibly tight. I shook my head violently, pleading with Caleb, desperately hoping he wouldn’t completely disregard the child in my womb. “Caleb, please, let me down. The baby… something terrible will happen.”

“Shut up! Who are you putting on this pathetic act for? What could possibly happen?” Caleb’s face showed not a flicker of concern. Instead, he watched my distress with open contempt. “Let’s roll out!” Captain Rex, hearing the command, slammed his foot on the accelerator. A powerful jolt threw me back. I felt as if I were flying. My tied hands were useless, and my voice, broken and fragmented by the speed, tried to cry out: “Please, slow down…” The zombies lurking outside the city, drawn by the noise, surged towards the armored vehicle from all directions. Captain Rex, visibly thrilled, accelerated further, utterly ignoring my pleas. The world spun around me. The vehicle’s full-throttle charge transformed the zombies into a mangled pile of flesh and bone. Then, with an abrupt screech, it reversed dozens of meters, only for Captain Rex to drive it forward again, like a madman possessed. My fear intensified, rendering my pleas unspoken. My heart hammered against my ribs, lodged in my throat. As the vehicle climbed over the zombie pile, the violently jolting chassis suddenly launched into the air, landing with a deafening crash on an open patch of ground ten meters away, kicking up a storm of dust. At that exact moment, a heavy, dragging sensation tore through my lower abdomen. A gush of warm liquid spilled from beneath me. My brows furrowed, my face instantly draining of color, pale as parchment. I looked at the remote camera mounted in the cockpit, shaking my head violently, begging for mercy. I knew Caleb was watching my pathetic, tortured state, taking it all in. But the armored vehicle continued its wild rampage, circling again and again, showing no signs of stopping. My throat burned from screaming, my cries for help torn apart by the wind. The tearing pain in my lower abdomen sapped every ounce of my strength. On the other end of the surveillance feed, Isabelle had appeared beside Caleb. They were both laughing, watching me transition from frantic screams to a deathly pale silence, until I finally succumbed, collapsing into unconsciousness. When I was carried out, my lower body was a bloody mess. “Barely lasted this long? Useless.” Caleb didn’t spare me a single second of his gaze. “Oh, Caleb dearest, that armored vehicle is amazing! Isabelle hasn’t had enough fun yet!” Isabelle cooed, playfully fawning over him. Caleb looked at Isabelle with doting affection, leaning in to whisper in her ear: “I’ll show you some real fun later.” His eyes briefly swept over me, then he gave a cold command: “Drag this dead woman away. Don’t let her taint everyone.” I completely lost consciousness. Under the dim surgical lights, blurry images of the past flickered before my eyes. Three years ago, I was nothing more than a nameless, lowly slave in this city. When my biological parents found me, I was already bruised and battered, barely clinging to life in an iron cage. It turned out I was the real destined one, swapped at birth. My biological father was Reverend Silas Sterling, the Patriarch of the Purity Doctrine, revered by the people of this ravaged world. I appeared before them, trembling, hoping I’d finally found loving parents, a warm home. Instead, I saw my mother gently soothing Isabelle, who was weeping inconsolably in her arms: “Don’t cry, Isabelle, darling. How could you not be your father’s and my daughter? You’re our only precious one, our treasure.” My father sat silently at the head of the table. Everyone else cast unfriendly, sidelong glances at me, whispering amongst themselves. I stood there, enduring their stares, my hands twisting the blood-stained fabric of my clothes, utterly an outsider. Finally, my father slowly spoke: “Seraphina, we brought you into this world. Now that you’re grown, it’s time you repaid us.” They weaponized the fact of my birth, twisting it into an inescapable obligation, commanding me to marry Warlord Caleb Blackwood in Isabelle’s place. This was because Caleb had been severely wounded in battle, and Isabelle, in a dramatic display, declared she’d rather die than marry a cripple. It became painfully clear: my parents’ search for their lost child was merely a cynical ploy to mask their sinister agenda. I wiped away a humble tear from the corner of my eye and said: “I agree. But first, delete my slave genetic coding.” “From this day forward, we will have no further ties.” They agreed. And so, I married Warlord Caleb Blackwood. Standing before Caleb, he never once looked at me directly. After the wedding, I learned of his isolated upbringing, devoid of parental love, and I felt a pang of pity for him. In public, he used a mask of cold detachment to uphold his pride. But when I caught him alone, in despair, impotently striking his own useless legs, my heart inexplicably ached for him. I foolishly believed that two people starved of love could find solace in each other. I wanted to heal his scarred soul, to pull us both from the shadows that had defined our miserable lives. I poured every ounce of my effort into being a dutiful wife. But the deeper I went, the more I lost myself. Until, tragically, I couldn’t even protect myself, letting the life within me be cruelly extinguished before it even had a chance to breathe.

Eleanor Blackwood sighed deeply, her eyes filled with regret. “Seraphina, our family has wronged you terribly. I will handle all the divorce proceedings. However, I have one last, difficult request.” “Could you… wait until Caleb’s surgery is done before leaving?” She seemed to realize the unfairness of her plea and quickly added: “Just three days. I’m afraid if he wakes up and finds you gone, he’ll become unstable and refuse the surgery.” I looked at her pleading expression, silent for a long moment. In the end, my soft heart prevailed, and I nodded. “I was wrong. You are a good girl, and I shouldn’t have forced you to endure more suffering by Caleb’s side.” As she spoke, Eleanor took off her necklace and placed it in my palm. The rose-shaped pendant glowed with a faint pink luminescence as it touched my skin. “This is the only untainted seed from the ravaged world, infused with half a lifetime of my own abilities. With it, you can cultivate your own powers and nurture many plants now thought extinct. I believe in your hands, it will unleash its true value.” “In three days, I will send people to escort you to a safe place. Go far away this time, where no one can ever harm you again.” Eleanor caressed the back of my hand. My nose stung, and tears welled in my eyes. It was like a child, long enduring pain in silence, finally breaking down. Without anyone to care, they bite their lip and hold on. But once someone shows concern, the brave facade crumbles, and a torrent of suppressed sorrow overwhelms them. Exhausted from crying, I drifted into sleep. Somewhere in the hazy depths of my slumber, a powerful force yanked at my wrist. Caleb’s furious voice ripped through my ears: “Seraphina Sterling, you dared to complain to Grandmother? You truly never learn, do you? Did you forget how I warned you last time?!” Caleb violently dragged me from the bed, throwing me onto the cold floor. My stomach slammed against the sharp corner of a chair, and a soft groan escaped my lips. Caleb, consumed by his rage, simply pointed a furious finger at me: “No one is allowed to bring her food! Spend these next few days reflecting on what you’ve done!” In the past, I would have meekly obeyed, apologizing and trying to explain. But now, I felt like a still pool of water, my voice utterly devoid of emotion: “Do with me what you will.” Caleb’s eyes suddenly darkened. My attitude had clearly enraged him. He then scoffed, a cold sneer on his face: “You really think acting like this will make me go easy on you?” No one knew Caleb’s methods of torment better than I did. The first time, Isabelle had deliberately provoked me at a dinner party. I lost my temper, spilling wine over her head. Before she could lunge, I slapped her hard across the face. The next second, Caleb’s face went cold. He barked at me to kneel, then grabbed my neck, slamming my head against the nearby fish tank. Water streamed over me, soaking my clothes, and a large shard of glass lodged itself deep in my thigh. I was a pathetic, trembling mess. Caleb stood by, watching with cold indifference, refusing to let anyone approach me. I struggled in the pile of broken glass for what felt like an eternity, unable to move. Finally, biting back a scream, I ripped the glass from my flesh, slowly pushing myself upright. Blood gushed from the wound. The zombie fish on the floor, driven into a frenzy by the scent of blood, thrashed and snapped at me. In my panic, I tried to swat them away, only to stumble and fall heavily back onto the shattered glass. Caleb and Isabelle’s mocking laughter echoed in my ears. From that day forward, no matter how Isabelle humiliated me, I endured it in silence. Caleb’s face loomed closer, that familiar, cruel smile close enough to touch. His cold breath ghosted my neck. “Your pain is my stimulant.” “From now on, you’d better pray hard. My legs will be restored after surgery, and then we can continue our little games.” He spoke with a tone of smug triumph and eager anticipation. His smile twisted into something increasingly sinister as he stared at my eyes, expecting to see the fearful, cowering look he so enjoyed. Instead, my expression was lifeless, my eyes vacant. This clearly bored him. He dropped his smile, turned his wheelchair, and left. As his silhouette vanished through the doorway, I softly uttered: “Caleb, there will be no ‘after’ for us.”

On the day I was discharged, the doctor repeatedly stressed the importance of rest and recovery. After much hesitation, I returned to the Blackwood estate. Stepping through the front door, I saw Caleb with Isabelle in his arms, his cold, mocking eyes filled with a tender affection I had never known. “Sister is out of the hospital! Caleb dearest and I should have gone to pick you up!” Caleb frowned in annoyance at her words. “Don’t mention that wretched woman and spoil our mood.” Then he playfully tapped Isabelle’s nose, and their poison-laced lips met in a passionate, wild kiss. I felt no anger, no sadness. And certainly no desire to witness their intense display. I simply quietly took off my shoes, walked upstairs, and burrowed into the blankets, wanting nothing more than to sleep. Three days left. Soon, everything would be over. When I woke, the empty rooms echoed with their unrestrained laughter from the living room. Their laughter, sharp as fangs, betrayed the endless malice festering within them. Seeing me emerge, Caleb’s lips curved into a playful smirk. He beckoned me over with a flick of his wrist. I calmly walked towards Caleb, then looked up at the large screen on the wall. It was playing videos from years past: Caleb forcing me to dig for zombie cores with my bare hands, throwing me into clusters of mutated flora for antidotes, leaving me suspended over a thousand-foot cliff while zombies gnawed at me. My screams, my terror, my frantic struggle for survival, my desperate pleas—they had always been nothing more than entertainment in their eyes. In the video, a thick rope bit into my waist. I clung desperately to Caleb’s wheelchair, my legs like jelly. Suffering from severe acrophobia, I was ghostly pale, staring at the bottomless abyss before me: “Caleb, please, let me go!” Caleb glanced at me indifferently: “Then kneel. Kneel and apologize to Isabelle, tell her your deceitful schemes prevented her from marrying me.” I didn’t hesitate. I instantly dropped to my knees, begging humbly, apologizing frantically: “I was wrong. I shouldn’t have married you. I’m shameless, I’m despicable.” Caleb’s lips curved in satisfaction. He pushed his wheelchair closer and extended a hand. My tear-streaked face was covered in wild strands of hair. A flicker of hope ignited within me, and I quickly reached out, allowing his hand to help me up. Before I could even discern the expression on his face, I felt a violent shove. I looked at Caleb in shock. He was smiling as he personally pushed me off the cliff. In those fleeting seconds, I finally saw his treacherous, true nature. The sensation of freefall threatened to drag me straight to hell. My screams echoed through the valley, disturbing the zombies lurking in the darkness. Their agitated roars grew closer, more numerous. I could already picture myself being torn apart, not even bones left. The rope suddenly went taut, leaving me dangling precariously over that valley of death. I gripped the rope tightly, swallowing my fear. The rumbling of the earth below reminded me to hold onto this lifeline and escape immediately. My feet scrambled against the loose, crumbling earth of the cliff face. The rope chafed my hands raw, turning them bloody. When I finally reached the ground, I collapsed, utterly drained, my face devoid of color. I lay at Isabelle’s feet, too weak to struggle, watching her double over with laughter: “Sister, you’re so resilient! I can’t believe we’re seeing you alive again. Come and see how scared you were, your mouth was wide open!” I clenched my fists tight, the biting pain of my nails digging into my palms was the only thing keeping me from screaming, keeping me from collapsing into tears. If my suffering brought them such joy, then I would absolutely deny them that satisfaction!

  • After rebirth, my fiancé took white moonlight as an antidote, and I watched coldly.

My fiancé was drugged. As he burned up, completely out of his mind, clinging to Seraphina, I didn’t stop him. It was only because, in my past life, I was his ‘cure.’ And we were caught in a compromising position, entwined together. Against our will, our engagement was rushed. But after we married, Julian’s childhood sweetheart left the country, and he grew increasingly cold towards me. After using my family’s resources to climb the social ladder, he locked me in a basement, letting people torment me day and night. “Elara, you love to seduce men, don’t you? Well, I’ll let you have your fill!” I was brutalized in that lightless basement. After I got pregnant, he beat me until I miscarried, then bled to death. This time, I chose to watch, cold and detached. I turned and walked away, leaving the room behind me a scene of absolute debauchery. Stumbling, I reached my parents, tears welling in my eyes. “Mom, I don’t feel well. I want to go home, fast!” Seeing my state, Mrs. Sterling asked worriedly, “Elara, what’s wrong? Where’s Julian? Where did he go?” “Please don’t ask, just take me home quickly. I never want to see him again!” My voice was choked with sobs, a mix of sorrow and resentment. My distressed appearance drew the attention of everyone around us. “Oh, look, the young couple’s having a spat!” “It’s the Harringtons’ birthday gala today, you can’t cause a scene here!” “That’s right, Elara, Julian’s usually so good to you. Don’t be so dramatic!” Those who usually crossed me were now desperate to pin the blame on me for ruining Mrs. Harrington’s birthday gala. I couldn’t help but sneer, “He’s getting hot and heavy with another woman. Is that me being ‘dramatic’ too?” The crowd gasped in shock! My parents were furious. “Elara, what are you saying!” “That Julian dared to betray you? Where is he?!” I didn’t speak, just stared up at the second floor. My mom, agitated, immediately grabbed my hand. “Come on, take me up there!” “Mom, forget it. Let’s just go home!” “Absolutely not! Julian practically begged us for your hand. How long has it been, and he’s already with another woman? Where does that leave our family’s reputation?” Without another word, she dragged me forward. We ran into Mrs. Harrington, who saw red, absolutely furious that someone would be so brazenly intimate at her family’s birthday gala. She marched upstairs with her bodyguards. I protested out loud, but inside, I was practically cackling with glee. If Mrs. Harrington knew that the woman Julian was messing around with was her beloved niece, Seraphina, I wondered how utterly enraged she’d be! By then, a crowd was following. I kept pulling on Mrs. Harrington’s arm. “Mrs. Harrington, please, let’s just drop it. Julian’s family can apologize later. Let’s not go up!” Before Mrs. Harrington could speak, my mom tightened her grip on my hand and snapped, “Elara, what have I taught you? Are you always going to be so soft-hearted?” “It’s just Julian! There are plenty of other men. Our family doesn’t need trash like him!” Mrs. Harrington scoffed. “Mrs. Sterling is right. Miss Sterling, your taste in men is truly dreadful!” At her words, I had no choice but to shut up. Mrs. Harrington, I truly hope you can maintain that high-and-mighty attitude for a little while longer. Just as we reached the second floor, we heard loud, piercing screams from a woman echoing down the hallway. Everyone around us instantly flushed crimson. “Tsk, tsk, how shameless! Who is that tramp?” “Young blood, eh? Julian’s really something, isn’t he?” Mrs. Harrington’s face was dark with fury. “Go, kick that door open!” At her command, the bodyguards brutally kicked the door wide! The people inside hadn’t even reacted. The woman was still violently writhing on top of the man, and torn clothes were scattered all over the floor. Seeing this, Mrs. Harrington pointed at them. “Drag them out for me!” “Let me see which shameless hussy this is!” A bodyguard stepped forward and grabbed the woman’s hair, yanking her off the man. But she just shrieked, clutching Julian’s hand, refusing to let go. “No!” “I want more! You guys should join us too!” Her coquettish wails made everyone sick to their stomachs and even made the bodyguard pause. I stood to the side, clearly seeing the look of horror on the bodyguard’s face. Yes, horror. He clearly recognized who the woman was. “Utterly shameless!” “Still clinging on like that? Utterly depraved!” Mrs. Harrington was even more enraged. “What are you all standing around for? Go on, drag her off!”

The moment she spoke, the lead bodyguard sighed. Gritting his teeth, he brutally pulled the woman’s arm and literally threw her onto the floor! On the bed, Julian’s face was flushed crimson. He then scrambled off the bed, still trying to crawl back onto the woman, but a bodyguard kicked him away! He cried out in pain, then pounced and hugged the bodyguard, starting to thrust against him. The sight made everyone around them visibly nauseated. “My God, what’s wrong with Julian?” Mrs. Harrington trembled with rage. “Go, pin him down in the bathroom! Get him to sober up, fast!” Several bodyguards forcefully dragged Julian into the bathroom. My mom was yelling furiously, “That animal is behaving like a rabid dog!” “And this woman, she has no self-respect!” I quickly pulled my mom back. “It’s fine, stop yelling.” “Why not yell? You’re too soft-hearted! A woman like this deserves a good lesson!” With that, she grabbed the woman’s hair, raising her hand to strike. I was about to shout, but my mom froze. “This…” She looked up at Mrs. Harrington, then at me. Mrs. Harrington was utterly confused. “Mrs. Sterling, why are you looking at me like that?” “Don’t tell me this woman belongs to your family?” My mom sneered. “I wouldn’t dare to speak carelessly. A rotten, depraved, filthy woman like that isn’t worth dirtying my hands with. Mrs. Harrington, you should deal with her yourself.” Though Mrs. Harrington was confused, she still ordered her bodyguards to pull the woman up. At this point, Seraphina finally seemed to fully regain her senses. Seeing the crowd around her, she quickly grabbed a nearby bedsheet, wrapped it around her face, and shrieked, “Get out! All of you, get out!” Mrs. Harrington sneered, “Weren’t you so promiscuous just now? Now you suddenly feel shame?” “Throw her out!” The bodyguards hesitated, but Mrs. Harrington snapped, “Just do as I say! Or do you want to lose your job?!” The next moment, the bodyguard took a deep breath, grabbed Seraphina, and started to drag her out. Seraphina shrieked, “Auntie! Auntie, it’s me!” Hearing that voice, Mrs. Harrington’s face went from pale to ashen. Her hands trembling, she immediately yanked the bedsheet away. When she saw that familiar face, Mrs. Harrington stumbled back several steps, collapsing onto the floor. And I exclaimed, “Seraphina, how could it be you!” “Mrs. Harrington, isn’t this your niece? So, so it was *her* who seduced Julian!” “Your family, the Harringtons, are truly too much!” I covered my face, though in reality, I was almost laughing out loud. I pinched my mom’s arm hard, and she also caught on. “Fine, Mrs. Harrington! This is your family’s upbringing? Rather than behaving like a respectable young lady, she chooses to act like a common tramp!” Mrs. Harrington’s face instantly darkened. Before, she had always been high-and-mighty, looking down on us. But now, she was in this state. By now, everyone else had gathered around. “So it’s Mrs. Harrington’s niece!” “Didn’t Mrs. Harrington herself sleep her way to the top back in the day?” “Mrs. Harrington, what a role model! Leading by example, teaching her niece how it’s done!” Mrs. Harrington’s face was livid, and Julian was now completely sober. When he saw the scene, Julian’s face turned beet red. I rushed forward and slapped him hard, twice! “You animal! You scumbag! Our engagement is off!” Julian stared at me, his face a mask of disbelief. It took him a long moment to react. “Elara, you…” “Shut up! Julian, you’ve ruined Mrs. Harrington’s birthday gala, and you’re utterly shameless! From this moment on, we walk separate paths!”

Julian roared, “No! It’s you, Elara, you set me up!” My mom, enraged, stepped forward and slapped him hard! “You beast, you’re the one who debased yourself! How dare you blame us?” “If the Harringtons don’t give me an explanation today, I’ll immediately contact the press!” “Mrs. Harrington, you should check the surveillance to see who drugged Julian!” “After all, this animal didn’t even spare a man earlier!” Thinking of how Julian had been thrusting against a man earlier, Mrs. Harrington was beside herself with rage. Her face pale, she glared at Julian with venomous eyes. Seraphina whimpered, “Auntie, it’s all my fault, but I really love him. Why don’t you let him and I…” “Shut up!” Mrs. Harrington cut her off without hesitation. “Your marriage is *not* up to you!” I understood. Mrs. Harrington had married into the Harrington family herself, and Seraphina was her carefully groomed protégée. Naturally, she wanted to make the best use of her. All these years of pampering her like her own daughter, wasn’t it all in hopes of selling her for a good price? She at least expected Seraphina to marry someone of equal social standing. What was Julian? Mrs. Harrington wouldn’t even deign to look at him. Mrs. Harrington took a deep breath. “Check the surveillance!” Seraphina, still wrapped in the bedsheet, stood up. “Don’t check! I did it willingly!” “Auntie, I want to marry him! Elara just broke off her engagement anyway!” Julian, hearing this, immediately grew excited. “Yes, I made a mistake, and I’m willing to take responsibility! I’ll marry her!” “You’ll marry her?” Mrs. Harrington was so furious she clutched her chest, as if she might faint any second. With things escalating to this point, Mrs. Harrington was in a bind. Mr. Harrington arrived. Seeing the scene, his face darkened. He ordered the guests to disperse, leaving only our two families and Julian. The surveillance footage quickly emerged. It showed a servant from the banquet, but surprisingly, Seraphina was directing her. Seeing this, I couldn’t help but say coolly, “Miss Seraphina, quite the talent! Today has certainly been an eye-opener!” Mr. Harrington looked at me. “This is Seraphina’s fault. To make amends, you can name your price!” My heart leaped at his words! Alexander Harrington was not like his wife, Sarah. He was cunning and deeply calculating. If not now, when would be a better time to profit? “The Quantum Pharmaceuticals contract. Our Sterling family wants it.” Hearing me say this, my parents clenched their fists. Alexander merely pondered for a moment, then agreed. “Alright, I’ll arrange it. However, Miss Sterling, about today’s events, I hope you’ll keep it under wraps!” “Mr. Harrington, rest assured, we’re not gossips.” With Alexander Harrington’s promise, my parents and I left. Before leaving, I glanced at Julian. I hoped he’d be lucky! As we stepped outside, I could still hear screams echoing from within. My mom was still shaken. “Elara, how could you dare to ask him for that contract? It’s worth two billion!” “They owe me this!” Seraphina caused such a scandal, and at the Harrington’s house no less. If word got out, it would only bring shame upon their family. He used two billion to buy our silence. Someone would still have to take the fall for today’s mess. That unlucky scapegoat could only be Julian. But judging by Seraphina’s attitude, she wouldn’t let him down. However, a Seraphina who had lost her usefulness would never get another penny from the Harringtons! In my past life, Julian always blamed me, saying I made him lose the chance to climb higher. He wasn’t satisfied with just using my family’s resources and connections; he was foolishly ambitious, trying to latch onto the Harringtons. This life, I’m giving you the chance. Let’s see if you can seize it! Too bad Alexander Harrington came along. Julian, your good days are over! I promised Alexander Harrington I wouldn’t say anything, but there’s no such thing as a completely soundproof wall. Especially with so many people there that day, even if the Harringtons tried to seal it up, the rumors still got out.

  • The wrong question is what year it is tonight.

Fourteen years of marriage. I thought our days would drift by, peaceful and steady, but fate had a cruel twist in store. Julian Thorne actually brought his first love, the one he had always pined for, into our home. And she was pregnant with his child. He stood before me, his expression disturbingly calm, almost cold. Yet his words were like a blade, stabbing directly into my heart: “Cassandra, I need a child. But don’t overthink this. Nothing between us will change because of it. Everything will remain just as it was.” Later, something happened that completely shattered me. Elara Jenkins, the woman who had loved me like her own daughter, was brutally pushed down the stairs by Veronica Reed. She died on the spot. My grief was overwhelming. I desperately yearned for Julian to give me justice, to punish the murderer severely. But he only frowned, dismissing it with a casual wave: “Cassandra, she’s carrying my child. Just bear with it.” In that moment, my heart plummeted into an endless abyss. And our little dog, Buddy, the one we adopted together. He was so adorable, so utterly dependent on us. But he ended up cruelly served on our dinner table. When I confronted Julian, he maintained that same indifferent demeanor, brushing me off with, “Cassandra, just hold on a little longer. Everything will be fine once the baby is born.” However, even before the child arrived, something far more horrifying occurred. Julian actually tricked me into drinking a sterilization elixir. He held me close, whispering in my ear, “Cassandra, I’ll love you forever. Believe me.” Those tender words, now sounded so fake, so utterly nauseating. From that day on, I became a different person. Each day, I acted docile and obedient. Whatever he asked, I never refused. He believed I had accepted my fate, that I would continue to endure everything with quiet submission. Until one day, I silently blocked and deleted every single contact related to him. I packed my bags and left that heartbreaking house without a backward glance, clean and gone, not a single shred of attachment remaining. But I never imagined he wouldn’t let me go. One rainy day, he appeared by my car, drenched to the bone, frantically banging on my window. I slowly rolled it down. His eyes were bloodshot, his voice hoarse and desperate: “Cassandra, are you leaving me?” I gazed at him quietly, my heart unmoving. Then I rolled up the window again and drove away, leaving him to cry alone in the rain.

Julian Thorne returned, his cherished first love, Veronica Reed, trailing behind him. He stood in the doorway, a flustered look on his face. His lips parted slightly, then closed, hesitating for a long moment before he seemed to steel himself, gritting his teeth. “Cassandra, this is… Veronica. She’s pregnant with my child, and I can’t leave her alone out there, without anyone…” I froze, my mind blank for a split second, completely failing to grasp the true meaning behind his words. Before I could even react, Veronica, who had been hiding behind Julian, stepped forward as if summoning all her courage. She grabbed my arm tightly, her eyes welling up with tears, saying pitifully, “Sister, I didn’t mean to come between you two. It’s just that I desperately needed the money. I had nowhere else to turn, so I resorted to this…” A wave of disgust washed over me. Instinctively, I recoiled, yanking my arm free. Seeing this, Julian immediately lunged forward, pulling Veronica close into his embrace. His eyes were sharp with警惕, and he exclaimed, “Cassandra, if you have an issue, direct it at me. She’s pregnant; she can’t handle stress!” After saying that, he seemed to realize his tone had been too harsh. He paused, then quickly explained, “The pregnancy is unstable. The doctor said she can’t endure any stress, or it could be dangerous.” I lowered my gaze, looking at the red marks Veronica had left on my wrist. A sharp pain pierced my heart, and I remained silent. Seeing my prolonged quiet, Julian finally looked down at me, only then noticing my wrist was completely red. Veronica, noticing this, immediately put on a pained expression. Her voice was laced with tears as she whimpered, “Oh, sister, I didn’t mean it. I really didn’t use much force…” Her voice trailed off, becoming an almost inaudible murmur between the two of them. Julian, worried that Veronica might feel guilty, quickly turned to her, explaining gently, “It’s nothing. Her skin is just like that, it reddens with the slightest touch. It has nothing to do with you, don’t take it to heart.” Listening to their back-and-forth, my mind was a tangled mess. I struggled to extract the key information from their conversation and asked, “What child?” Julian’s face instantly became awkward. His eyes darted around, unable to meet mine, and he stammered, “Cassandra, she’s just staying here temporarily. It won’t affect your life. Once the child is born, nothing will change. We’ll go back to how things were.” My heart ached so much I could barely breathe. Each word felt squeezed through clenched teeth as I demanded, “If you want a child, we can adopt one from an orphanage. Why did you have to find someone else to have a baby for you?” Julian frowned, a flicker of impatience crossing his face. He snapped, “Cassandra! A child from an orphanage wouldn’t be my blood! How could that be my child? It’s not the same!” I looked at his expression, which didn’t seem like a lie. A sudden, immense sense of absurdity washed over me, as if everything before my eyes was a ridiculous farce. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself, and said, “But you didn’t discuss this with me beforehand. You only told me after she was pregnant. What kind of arrangement is this?” Julian seemed provoked by my words. He loudly cut me off, “Isn’t it all your fault for not being able to have children!” After saying that, he seemed to realize he had gone too far. He added, irritably, “I’m sorry, Cassandra. I didn’t mean it that way. Don’t take it to heart.” I stared at this man, familiar yet so strange, a mix of emotions churning inside me. We hadn’t been together for a day or two; he wasn’t learning about my condition for the first time. Yet now he was using it to blame me. I bit my lip, enunciating each word: “Julian Thorne, in this house, it’s either her or me. Not both.” With that, I stopped looking at his face, turned, walked into the bedroom, and slammed the door shut. After a while, the conversation in the living room gradually quieted down. I didn’t know how he had settled Veronica. Not long after, the bedroom door behind me gently opened, and Julian walked in. He softly pulled me into his embrace, his voice low: “Cassandra, I’m sorry, but I really need a child. This is the only way my mom would agree to our marriage. Don’t worry, we’ve already discussed it. After she gives birth, she’ll disappear. She won’t come between us.” I looked at him, full of questions and confusion. He sighed and continued, “My mother never accepted us. Then, she somehow found out you couldn’t have children and absolutely refused to let us marry. I had no choice but to come up with this plan…” He didn’t finish, but I understood everything. I looked at him coldly and said, “Julian Thorne, you shouldn’t have lied to me. And you definitely shouldn’t have waited until Veronica was pregnant to tell me. Did you even consider my feelings?” Julian quickly said, “I’m sorry, Cassandra, I promise it won’t happen again! I, Julian Thorne, swear to God, if I ever deceive Cassandra Hayes again, may I be struck by lightning…” I quickly covered his mouth, completing his unfinished oath for him: “May I never see Julian Thorne again, and lose the one I love forever.” Julian listened, a hint of confusion on his face, as if he didn’t understand why he was making the oath, but the consequence would fall upon me. Veronica was temporarily settled in our guest bedroom. At first, she would cautiously watch my every move, timid in everything she did. It wasn’t until she realized I didn’t pay much attention to her that she slowly began to assert herself. In the past, Julian would leave for work without breakfast, and our housekeeper would only prepare meals after I woke up. But after Veronica arrived, she insisted that skipping breakfast was unacceptable and started preparing breakfast for Julian where I couldn’t see. Elara, our housekeeper, tried to warn me several times, but seeing that I seemed indifferent even after accidentally witnessing it, she eventually gave up. Perhaps my indifference emboldened Veronica, as she began to meddle in our household affairs. Initially, it was small things, like which brand of laundry detergent to use. She claimed that a certain brand was better for pregnant women and replaced all the detergent we had used for years. Then came the daily meals; she started making occasional requests – no cilantro, she loved winter melon, and so on. To me, these were minor matters, so I let her have her way. But I never imagined she would dare to lay her hands on someone close to me. Recently, wanting to avoid seeing Julian and Veronica, I confined myself to my room. Elara Jenkins, the housekeeper, brought my three meals upstairs. Elara had been with me since I was a child; in my heart, she was like family. Besides Julian, she was the person I trusted most. Yet, when I saw her again, she was lying in a pool of blood. The sight was a blinding red. Elara lay on the ground, bleeding profusely; the scene was horrifying. My mind went blank. I violently shoved Veronica, who was standing by the stairs, and frantically rushed downstairs, cradling Elara tightly in my arms. My voice trembled as I cried, “Elara, hold on, I’m taking you to the hospital right now!” Hearing the commotion, Julian rushed out of his study. Seeing the scene, he gasped, “What happened?!” A large pool of blood had gathered at the bottom of the stairs. Upstairs, Veronica clutched her stomach, slowly crouching down, moaning in pain. I desperately yelled at Julian, “Julian! Drive Elara to the hospital, now!” But I saw his eyes fixed on Veronica, filled with worry. He quickly ran upstairs, helped Veronica down, and said, “Cassandra, Veronica is pregnant. I have to take care of her first.” “Go, now!” I shouted at Julian again, my voice sharp with urgency. The 911 ambulance would still be a while, and I wanted Julian to rush Elara to the hospital, but he refused. He frowned and said, “Cassandra, you should stay here and wait for the ambulance. Their equipment is better, and if anything happens to Elara on the way, they can handle it.” “No! Julian Thorne, Elara’s situation is critical. Drive us, please!” Tears streamed down my face, my voice choked with sobs. Veronica clutched her stomach, crying out in pain. Julian roughly shoved my hand away and helped Veronica into the car. I clung to the car door, pleading desperately, “Julian Thorne, I’m begging you. Elara is bleeding so much, please.” “I’ll kneel for you, Julian Thorne, if that’s what it takes.” I said, slowly bending my legs, kneeling on the ground. Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. “Please, Julian Thorne, save Elara.”

My tears, uncontrollable, dripped onto Julian’s hand. He flinched back as if seared by hot coals, his movement startlingly swift. “Cassandra, don’t do this…” His voice held a mix of panic and helplessness. “Julian darling, my stomach really hurts. Is something wrong with our baby?” I clutched his sleeve tightly, my eyes filled with fear and vulnerability. At her words, Julian’s gaze instantly hardened. He no longer hesitated, turning back to the driver’s seat, closing the car door, and stomping on the accelerator. The car shot away like an arrow from a bow, vanishing from my sight. “Cassandra…” A weak voice called from behind me. It was Elara. “Elara!” I crawled to her side with difficulty, holding her tightly in my arms, as if that could lend her some strength. “Cassandra, Elara might not be able to walk with you much longer.” Elara’s voice was faint and trembling. “Elara wanted to see our Cassandra in a wedding dress, getting married and having children, what a shame…” Her eyes shimmered with tears, filled with regret. “Elara, hold on! The paramedics will be here soon, you’ll be fine!” I desperately tried to reassure her, and myself. “Elara, don’t sleep, please don’t sleep…” I squeezed her hand tightly, terrified that if I let go, she would leave me. “Elara!” No matter how I called out, Elara slowly closed her eyes in my arms, and her hand gradually grew cold. By the time the ambulance sirens wailed to a stop outside our house, Elara had already stopped breathing. The paramedics quickly checked her vital signs, then shook their heads at me, their eyes full of sympathy. “I’m sorry, Ms. Hayes…” The doctor’s words were like cold blades, piercing my heart. I couldn’t accept the truth. I grabbed the doctor’s sleeve, tears gushing like a broken dam: “Please save her, Doctor, please! She was just talking to me! She was fine!” “Please, hurry and save her! She’s always been so strong, there has to be hope, right?” I knelt on the ground, repeatedly bowing my head, begging them to save my Elara. “Ms. Hayes, I’m truly sorry. If we had been half an hour earlier, there might have been hope…” The doctor sighed helplessly. “Ms. Hayes, the deceased is gone. Please accept our condolences.” Another paramedic gently comforted me. “Elara is just sleeping. She’s just mad at Cassandra, she’ll wake up…” I held Elara’s body, refusing to let go, as if my warmth could make her feel it, make her wake up. “Elara, Cassandra will be good, Cassandra won’t be naughty anymore, please wake up?” I murmured, tears constantly falling onto Elara’s face. “Elara, you said you hadn’t seen Cassandra get married and have children yet, how could you leave first?” I held Elara tightly, just as she had held me when I was little, giving me endless warmth and comfort. The paramedics stood silently to the side, watching my last moments with Elara, unwilling to disturb the peace and sorrow. With the help of the paramedics, I took Elara’s body to the hospital and obtained the death certificate. At that moment, I felt as if all my strength had drained away, and I completely collapsed. “Hello, yes, I want to report a murder!” I dialed 911, my voice trembling. The police were efficient. In no time, they brought Veronica, who was at the maternity ward entrance, to Elara’s side. “Ms. Hayes, someone has reported a murder.” Officer Miller looked at me sternly. “Our investigation shows that Elara Jenkins’ death was due to a cranial cerebral injury and intracranial hemorrhage from falling down the stairs.” Officer Miller continued. “According to Ms. Hayes, you were standing at the top of the stairs at the time of the incident.” Officer Miller’s gaze was sharp and calm. Veronica’s face was pale, whether from fright or some other reason, she bit her lower lip tightly, saying nothing. “No… no, Officer,” I quickly argued. “Officer, Ms. Hayes must have mistaken what she saw.” Julian suddenly stepped forward, shielding Veronica behind him. “I was also present at the time. Veronica did not touch Elara Jenkins.” His tone was firm and resolute. “Elara Jenkins simply lost her footing and fell down the stairs by accident.” He added, as if that could clear Veronica of suspicion. I stared with wide eyes at this man, once so familiar, now so utterly foreign, my heart filled with disappointment and sorrow. Elara had been with us since I was a child; even now, she was like family. But now, Julian Thorne was willing to protect someone he barely knew, abandoning any pursuit of the person who had killed Elara. “Officer, they’re lying!” I shouted back, my voice brimming with fury and indignation.

  • Girlfriend amnesia falls in love with younger brother, brother secretly sneers, this love is revenge from the beginning

My girlfriend got into a car accident and lost her memory. My brother, Liam, pretended to be me and became her new boyfriend. Watching Liam’s sweet smile in the photo, I couldn’t help but curl my own lips. He had no idea that woman was a cage I had personally designed. And I? I was the only hunter. Liam just posted a new update on SnapChat. No caption. Just a picture of him with a woman, against a backdrop of vibrant Globe Amaranth flowers – the kind that symbolize eternal love. I stared at the photo, the screen’s light casting a cold, hard glint in my eyes. The woman in the picture was my girlfriend, Celeste. But she’d lost her memory in a carefully orchestrated car accident. She’d gotten into that accident because she was trying to catch me. Celeste and I met during summer break. The salty air of the coast, the sun-drenched paths of an old resort town. She smiled at me, backlit by the setting sun, and said it was love at first sight. I once believed it was destiny. Later, I learned that “destiny” was just the beginning of another hunt. Celeste was a possessive, controlling fanatic. Just because I wanted to cut our trip short and go home, she saw it as betrayal. She locked me away. Like training a disobedient beast, she chained me to the bed with cold metal, leaving me at her mercy. That month, I lived like something less than human. I found a way to escape. I thought that out-of-control car would end the nightmare. I never expected she’d only lose her memory. Now, this amnesiac lamb has caught the eye of my foolish brother.

He somehow found out about Celeste’s incredible family fortune and brazenly wormed his way into her life, taking advantage of her vulnerability. But he was still my brother. I couldn’t let him fall into a trap I’d personally dug. The moment Liam came home, I cornered him. The faint, unfamiliar scent of his cologne still hung in the air. “You know that’s my girlfriend,” my voice was flat, devoid of emotion. When I first ‘escaped’ home, nightmares haunted me every night. I’d scream Celeste’s name in my sleep. It was terror, a shiver etched deep into my bones. Liam, though, mistook it for profound love. He rushed forward, slapped me hard a few times, his eyes red as he grilled me about every single detail of my time with Celeste. “Julian, just let me have her,” he suddenly changed his demeanor, blinking with wide, wet eyes, like an innocent puppy. “You’ve always been the best big brother to me.” Always the same. Ever since we were kids, our parents always favored him. They always told me, as the older brother, to take care of Liam. We were twins; I was only born a few minutes before him, yet I was expected to bear the responsibility of looking after him for his entire life. My favorite toys, the candy apples I loved, the drawings I saved up for – if he so much as hinted he wanted them, they were his. He’d been raised with a spoiled, selfish streak. “Do you even know what kind of person Celeste is?” I asked him. Just thinking of that woman made my throat tighten, a lingering physical memory. “The Blackwood heiress? You think I don’t know that?” His eyes gleamed with astonishing brightness. “I know a lot more than you think.” “Now that Celeste lost her memory, I’ve been pretending to be her boyfriend and taking care of her for days.” Liam couldn’t hide the smug satisfaction from his lips. He’d always dreamed of marrying into a wealthy family, and now, opportunity had practically landed in his lap. My eyes widened instinctively. I thought he was just helping out. I never expected him to steal my identity. “Don’t you know you’re going to get yourself killed?” My voice held a tremor I hadn’t even realized was there—a mix of anger and a secret thrill. His stupidity would only drag him into the abyss. A thin layer of anger flushed Liam’s face. He suddenly lunged, grabbing for the chain on my wrist. The bracelet Celeste had given me, the one I hadn’t had time to take off. “Give it to me!” he snarled, using all his strength, yelling at the top of his lungs. “This was never yours to begin with!” Mom and Dad were traveling overseas, but I still worried his piercing voice would be heard by the neighbors. And if it was, I’d be the one getting yelled at. I let go, watching him snatch the silver bracelet. If he wanted to be Celeste’s boyfriend so badly, then let him. “This bracelet, and Celeste, they’re both mine now.” Liam put on the bracelet, swaggering as he flashed it at me. His eyes crinkled with a smile, like a child who’d gotten the whole world, already deeply immersed in the beautiful dream he’d woven for himself.

I dreamt of Celeste again. One moment, we were sitting side-by-side by a quiet lake, her eyes looking at me, filled with crushed starlight and intense, almost possessive affection. “I’ll wait for you forever,” she said, gripping my hand, her voice soft yet firm, like a vow carried on the wind. But the next second, the scene shifted. In a dark room, she was fiercely choking my neck, her cold lips pressed against my earlobe, her breath reeking of blood. “Why did you run away? Why did you leave me?” In the endless darkness, her face was shrouded in a sinister gloom, her gaze fierce and fixated, like a dying beast. “I wasn’t leaving you, I just wanted to go home.” Tears streamed down my face, the air slowly draining from my lungs. “I won’t run away. Can you… can you please not lock me up again? I’m scared.” Celeste let out a soft chuckle. Her hand finally moved from my vulnerable neck, and instead, gently stroked my hair, over and over. Like calming a frightened pet. “Julian, I know you’re the goodest boy,” her voice was hypnotic. “Just stay here with me, don’t go anywhere.” “If you don’t answer me again…” she paused, her tone suddenly chilling, “I’ll turn you into a beautiful dried corpse, to keep you by my side forever.” I shivered, then, with all my might, I trembled out those words. “I’ll… I’ll stay with you forever.” “Good boy.” … I woke from the nightmare, cold sweat soaking my back. Celeste’s scorching, possessive breath seemed to cling to me, branded onto my skin, sending shivers down my spine. I was terrified she would regain her memory and drag me back into that hell. That month was a gaping, bloody wound in my life, and I never wanted to look back. Thankfully, in just one more month, I’d be off to college in another city. I would leave this place forever and never cross paths with her again. I clutched my pounding heart, gasping for air. But then I looked up, and my eyes slammed into a pair of dark eyes silently watching me from the shadows. I instantly lost my voice and screamed.

“My fault,” a soft female voice said. “I accidentally came into the wrong room and scared your brother.” Celeste was wearing cotton bunny pajamas, her bangs falling over her eyes, concealing any emotion, making her look delicate and harmless. She offered a perfectly pitched apology, nodding slightly at me. Liam rushed in, pulling her protectively behind him, gripping her hand tightly, like a possessive wolf pup, terrified I’d snatch her away. “It’s fine, just go.” I avoided Celeste’s gaze. I couldn’t bear to look into those eyes. Those eyes, they seemed to pierce through my skin, seeing every hidden thought, leaving me nowhere to hide. Liam actually dared to bring her home to stay, without even telling me first. A surge of anger, like my territory had been invaded, burned in my chest. “Where’s your girlfriend staying? Why did you bring her home without telling me?” I stepped out of the room, lowering my voice to question him. “We only have a few rooms. How could she ‘accidentally’ get lost?” My tone was stern, my brows furrowed. He really was destined for a drama major. Liam’s eyes welled up instantly, long lashes glistening with tears, making him look like a frightened fawn. He looked as if he’d suffered some monumental injustice, a sight designed to provoke anyone’s protective instincts. “Julian was sleeping so early, I was afraid of disturbing him, so I didn’t get a chance to say anything.” He choked out his words, making me sound like a cruel, malicious older brother. Ever since we were kids, his best trick was crying. The loudest one always got what they wanted. He effortlessly reaped all the attention and affection that was always denied to me. And I, with my stubborn pride, always unwilling to back down, was forever the one being blamed. “It’s my fault,” Celeste gently raised a hand, wiping away Liam’s tears, her face full of self-reproach. “My memory hasn’t fully returned since the accident, and I keep forgetting things. I just accidentally came into the wrong room. I’m so, so sorry.” The light spilled into her bright, clear eyes, making her appear even more gentle and charming. But I knew what kind of obsessive, twisted heart lurked beneath that beautiful exterior. I involuntarily took a step back. “Then you two should go. Leave my room.” “Are you Liam’s brother, Julian?” Celeste’s voice was soft, yet it felt like a needle pricking my ear. She looked at me intently, her gaze filled with a probing curiosity, then quickly withdrew it, as if talking to herself. “I must have been mistaken. You’re twins, it’s normal for you to look alike.” Liam quickly pulled her arm and led her away. He didn’t want Celeste to spend another second with me, terrified her damn memory might suddenly return. As they reached the doorway, Celeste looked back and said softly, “Your brother seems a little afraid of me. I must have scared him. I’m truly sorry.” “Julian’s just a bit timid, it’s fine,” Liam reassured her, but shot me a warning look. After they left, I frantically locked my bedroom door. That night, I huddled with my blanket, leaning against the cold door, and slept there. Terrified she’d reappear like a phantom, silently at the foot of my bed.

Celeste completely dominated my dreams. Ever since she locked me up, I was constantly plotting my escape. She was incredibly attentive, gentle as water. If not for the cold metal touching my wrists and ankles, I would have truly believed I’d found love. “I’m saving you, not hurting you,” I once cried, my voice raw and hoarse. “How could you do this to me?” I first met her on a cliffside trail. She slipped, and I caught her just in time. She insisted on treating me to dinner. During the meal, we were amazed to discover how remarkably similar our tastes were – from movies to our plans for the future. I admitted I liked childish things, like having my entire room filled with plush toys. Celeste did too. Just like now, this soft, large bed was piled high with all sorts of bunny plushies. Their glass-bead eyes watched impassively as she pinned me beneath her, unable to move. “I only want what’s best for you,” her dark, deep eyes were like bottomless pools, locking onto mine. “Just be a good boy, stop thinking about running away, and I’ll let you go.” To escape, I retracted all my claws, becoming utterly obedient to her. “Good boy.” She finally revealed a satisfied, brilliant smile, then lowered her head and bit my neck. It didn’t hurt, but it carried the humiliation of a declaration of ownership. I could clearly feel the surge of her obsessive passion, her burning breath on my skin, an suffocating aggression. I felt nauseous. It was a primal revulsion, mixed with fear and disgust, churning in my stomach. She gently unlocked my chains, then brazenly began to toy with my body. The chains clicked open, a sound that should have been the gospel of freedom, but now it felt like the prelude to hell opening. The cold of the metal had barely receded from my wrists when her fingertips covered them. It wasn’t a caress of desire, but more like… an appraisal. She was like a calm artisan admiring a masterpiece nearing completion. Her fingertips traced my collarbone, my chest, my waist, with an irresistible pressure, as if branding her mark onto my skin. The air was thick with her cool perfume, mingling with the cold sweat of my fear, transforming into a sticky, oppressive scent. I was forced to tilt my head back, looking at the dim light on the ceiling, feeling less like a person and more like an object laid bare, stripped of all dignity and the right to resist. Her kisses were cold and damp, falling on my eyelids, my lips, my jaw. Each kiss was like a mark, an occupation. She whispered in my ear, those gentle words now more chilling than the most malicious curse. “Julian, you’re mine.” “Every inch of your skin, every breath you take, is mine.” My body trembled almost imperceptibly, not from excitement, but from extreme humiliation and fury. I clenched my teeth, swallowing every protest and scream. Because I knew that any hint of disobedience would only result in a longer, more desperate confinement. She handled my limbs as if I were a cherished piece of porcelain, exploring every corner of my body. In her eyes, there was no lust, only a near-insane obsession and possessiveness. I felt my soul being slowly peeled from my body, floating in mid-air, coldly observing this shell endure everything. That night was absurd and endless. I quietly put on my clothes, tightly clutching the car keys I’d stolen from her jacket pocket. Like a startled rabbit, I fled desperately from that cage. But I never expected her to wake up so quickly. Another black car blocked me on the winding mountain road, like a silent beast. Celeste got out of the car, her dark hair glowing softly in the morning sun. She looked at me quietly, a gentle, almost resigned smile on her face. “You lied to me,” she said softly, her voice scattered by the wind. In that moment, every nerve in my brain snapped. I slammed on the accelerator, driving straight at her. I’d rather be a murderer than return to that hell. There were no cameras here. Let her rot. But I never thought she’d still be alive. Not only alive, but brought into my home by my foolish brother. I couldn’t imagine how she would drag me back into the abyss once her memory returned.

Morning sunlight streamed through the curtains. When I stepped out of my room, Celeste and Liam were sitting at the dining table. She considerately handed Liam a napkin, her face adorned with a doting, unblemished smile. Those gentle, water-like eyes seemed to forever hold boundless affection. “Thanks,” Liam’s face flushed, his eyes cast down like dewy grapes. “It’s nothing,” Celeste looked up, her gaze bypassing him and settling on me, a smile playing on her lips. “It’s what I should do as your girlfriend.” Her gaze felt like feathers, yet also like barbed whips, slowly tracing my exposed neck and arms. I shivered, then hurried into the bathroom, head down. When I came out after washing up, Celeste was in the kitchen washing dishes. The sunlight outlined her slender back, that picture of domestic tranquility, enough to deceive anyone. Who could imagine the obsessive, rotten core beneath that facade of false warmth? “Julian,” Liam’s voice chimed in my ear. He sat down beside me, grinning, but his hand unceremoniously pinched my arm. “You deliberately wore so little. Don’t think I don’t know you’re trying to seduce Celeste.” A sharp pain shot through me. I yanked my arm back, then grabbed his wrist. I stared at him coldly. “Liam, get this straight. You’re the one who stole my identity and took my girlfriend.” “If you want my trash, and you treat it like treasure, then keep it safe.” “But as your brother, I have to warn you,” I watched his face instantly drain of color, speaking each word slowly. “How could a car accident only result in superficial injuries? She’s been amnesiac for so long, not bothering to look for her family or regain her memory. Instead, she’s happily living in a stranger’s house. You know exactly what you’re thinking.” Our family was just a regular, ordinary working-class family. Between us and the Blackwoods, a prestigious old-money family, there was a whole galaxy. Liam was just taking advantage of her amnesia, trying to stage a cheap drama of “Billionaire Heiress Falls for Me.” Seeing his guilty face, I released his hand and turned to the kitchen. I took a plate of sliced watermelon from the fridge, and when I turned around, I bumped right into Celeste’s smiling eyes. She was standing right behind me, silent as a shadow. I tried to walk around her, but she reached out, placing a light but firm hand on my shoulder. “Can I have a slice of watermelon?” Her voice was soft, but her eyes were fixed on me, as if trying to see through my soul. I slapped her hand away fiercely, my heart skipping a beat. Every cell in my body screamed: kill this woman, kill her. I forced down the fear and the surging killing intent, managing to squeeze out a smile. “Go ahead.” Celeste naturally picked up the largest slice of watermelon, chewing it slowly. The bright red juice trickled down the corner of her lips, a sight that made it seem as if she were chewing my very flesh. I pressed my lips together, carrying the remaining watermelon, and fled back to my bedroom. *Click.* I locked the door. For the next month, I had to keep my distance from her. Just under a month. If I could just hold on for one more month, I’d be free. Not long after, the lock on my door clicked. Liam swayed the spare key in his hand and swaggered in. “Julian, you’re not going to stay in your room all day, are you?”
