• The Million-Dollar Side Hustle

My husband found himself a wealthy mistress. Every few days, he’d secretly transfer money to my account. In just six months, he sent me a cool $618,000. I was considering divorcing him. But then I thought about it. Screw that! Divorce? Every second spent thinking about leaving him was an insult to the money. Where else would I find such a “family-oriented” husband who hustles so hard for our bank account? I should let him rake in a little more, right? 1 Sierra slapped me so hard my face burned instantly. “Are you crazy?” I looked up at her, clutching my cheek, totally bewildered. “Chloe! You liar! Are you and your husband running a scam on me?!” Before I could react, my coworkers swarmed around us. “Who are you? Why did you hit her?” She pointed a finger right at my nose and started screaming. “Your husband, Chase, used my credit card to transfer money to you! Six hundred and eighteen thousand dollars in six months! Did you think I wouldn’t find out?” I froze for a second, then it clicked. Ah. This must be Chase’s sugar mama. The “Side Piece.” She grabbed my collar, her face twisted in rage. “You dirty couple! Six hundred grand! Did you think I was an ATM just to clear your shopping cart?” With that one sentence, I became the center of attention. Every phone in the office was out, cameras flashing. Sierra raised her hand and slapped me again, knocking me to the floor. She shouted to everyone, “Look at her! This woman is a fraud! She and her husband are scammers!” She cursed and tried to hit me again. My coworker, Lisa, stepped in. “That’s enough! We know Chloe. Stop or we’re calling the cops!” “Call them! Do it!” She laughed like a maniac. “I want to see how she explains this to the police! Spending my money? I’m going to beat you until you’re toothless, or my name isn’t Sierra Vance!” She was thrashing like an angry octopus, trying to tear me apart. My colleagues held her back while she screamed. I smoothed my messy hair and stood up. Calm. Unbothered. “Ma’am. You keep saying my husband and I scammed you. I don’t even know who you are. How exactly did I scam you?” She glared at me, trembling. “Don’t play dumb! I don’t believe you don’t know who I am!” I gasped, covering my mouth in mock surprise. “Wait… what is your relationship with him?” Sierra blushed, glancing around nervously. “It doesn’t matter! You stole my money, and you’re going to pay it back!” I stared straight into her eyes. “Are you… my husband’s mistress?” That set her off. She lunged. “Bullshit! He’s keeping me? He’s a broke driver! He couldn’t afford me! I was keeping him…” The office gasped in collective shock. I smiled faintly. “So, you admit you had an affair with my husband?” She choked but doubled down. “So what?! Chase is a dog! He spent my money, drove my car, and used my cash to support his wife!” I pulled out my phone, satisfied. “I recorded that. And I’ve called the police for assault. My colleagues are witnesses.” “See you at the precinct.” Hearing I was pressing charges, Sierra lost it completely and tried to swing at me again. 2 The police arrived just in time. We were hauled off to the station. The moment we sat down, she started wailing. She claimed fraud, emotional damage, the works. She pulled out chat logs and transfer records with Chase as proof. “Officer, look! I bought him a house, a car! And he gave all the money to this woman! How could he do this to me?” Tears streamed down her face. She was genuinely heartbroken by Chase’s betrayal. But the cops just stared at her. Like she was an idiot. She claimed fraud, but her own evidence proved she was having an affair. She knew he was married. A homewrecker coming after the wife? The audacity was impressive. “Civil disputes aren’t our jurisdiction,” the officer said dryly. She jumped up. “He used my money to feed his wife! There has to be a law against that!” Just as she was about to throw a tantrum, Chase arrived. Sierra flew at him, pummeling his chest. “Chase, you bastard! You played me!” She collapsed into sobbing hysterics. The police pried them apart. Chase, face scratched and bleeding, glared at her. “Sierra, are you out of your mind?” “You call me crazy?! Where is your conscience? I treated you like a king, and you gave everything to her behind my back!” Chase didn’t even blink. “Stop screaming! She’s my wife! Who else am I supposed to spend money on?” I watched from the side, jaw on the floor. Well. That was a new one. He saw me then, and his face transformed into pure concern. He rushed over. “Babe, are you okay? Are you hurt?” Seeing the bruise on my face, he turned on Sierra, furious. “Look what you did! I told you to leave my wife alone!” Sierra snapped. “Chase! How can you do this? Are you even a man?” “Yesterday you held me and said you loved me! You said you wanted to marry me! If I hadn’t seen the transfers, you would have emptied my accounts, wouldn’t you?!” “I said I loved you and you believed it?” Sierra wept, broken. “You said you had no feelings for your wife! You said she was a nag! You said she was a dead fish in bed! You said I was exciting…” “Shut up!” Chase turned beet red. “Have some shame!” “I’m telling you the truth now. I never loved you! I was just with you for the money!” “You were stupid enough to throw yourself at me!” “I only love my wife. Get that through your head!” He grabbed my hand and dragged me out, leaving Sierra standing there in the wreckage of her delusion. 3 The moment we got home, Chase dropped to his knees on the living room tiles. “Chloe, I messed up.” I ignored him, pouring myself a glass of water. “I’m scum. I shouldn’t have let you get hurt. I was blinded by greed. I don’t care about her money or her looks… she just… she threw money at me…” He was crying now, begging. It was confusing. Did he love me? He cheated. Did he hate me? He hustled over half a million dollars from his mistress and gave it all to me. “So, what? Should I give you a ‘Husband of the Year’ award?” He went pale. “I just made a mistake. It’s a mistake any man could make…” The bedroom door opened. My in-laws rushed out. “You idiot!” My mother-in-law smacked the back of his head. “We have a good life! Why go out and mess around?” They didn’t know the details, only that their son had angered me again. Since Chase was useless career-wise and I paid the bills, they always took my side. After a scolding, Chase confessed everything. A year ago, he got a job driving for a wealthy tycoon. Over the last six months, he transferred me $1.3 million total. I asked where it came from. He said the boss gave him stock tips. Turns out, he was being a gigolo. Sierra was the tycoon’s mistress. And she was keeping Chase on the side. My in-laws were horrified. His mom started crying. “You worthless boy! Earning dirty money like that!” Chase hung his head, face burning. “I know I was wrong. But I swear, I never wanted a divorce. I felt nothing for her!” “Nothing? Then why sleep with her? Can’t control yourself?” His mom raised her hand again. Chase flinched. “She forced it! She said I was… good. She said her old man was useless, treating her like a pet. She was lonely! She threatened suicide if I left…” I scoffed. “Popular guy.” He crawled to me, grabbing my pant leg. “Chloe, I swear, I never wanted to leave you. I just saw how rich she was. I make nothing. You work so hard… I just wanted to help…” Right. So I should give him an award. Selling his body to support his wife. Kissing me by day, servicing a sugar mama by night. The hustle was real. “Okay,” I looked down at him. “So, she’s suing us for fraud. She wants the money back. What’s the plan?” Chase stiffened. “Screw her! She gave it willingly! I earned that money! Why should I give it back?” I told him to get up, but he clung to my leg. “Chloe, if you don’t forgive me, I won’t get up. What do I have to do?” I stared at him. “I can forgive you. But…” 4 Six months ago, when the first transfer hit, I knew something was off. Stock tips? From a billionaire to a chauffeur? Please. I checked his phone while he slept. I found the texts with Sierra. Chase was a master manipulator. He gave her exactly the emotional validation she craved, and she paid him for it. The funny part was, he immediately forwarded the cash to me. My first instinct was divorce. My best friend, Zoe, called me an idiot. “That necklace you’re wearing? How much?” she asked. “Three grand.” “Bracelet?” “Five hundred.” “Bag?” I couldn’t help it. I smiled. She grinned back. “See?” My anger evaporated. “Look,” Zoe said. “Your husband’s… equipment… was just gathering dust. Now he’s putting it to work for the family economy. It’s brilliant!” I nodded. “Valid point.” “If it were me,” she laughed, “I’d make sure he kept that mistress happy so the checks keep clearing.” I raised my glass. “To you. The voice of reason.” “What else do you need?” she asked mischievously. I pretended to think. “An Audi A6.” A month later, the money for the Audi hit my account. I pretended not to know where it came from. I moved it to a secure account. I made Chase soup. A reward for his hard labor. He drank it with tears in his eyes. He used to beg for my attention. Now that I was “sweet” to him, he was putty in my hands. “Babe, you’re so good to me,” he sniffled. I smiled. Not as good as you, working the night shift. When I told him we needed to fake a divorce so he could scam her for one last big score, he cried. “Chloe! You haven’t forgiven me! I won’t do it!” I pushed him away gently. “I don’t blame you. Really.” He gulped. “Serious?” “Yes. We divorce on paper. You go back, make up with her, and keep the money flowing.” He stared. “You… aren’t afraid I’ll leave for real?” I laughed. “Could you?” He shook his head violently. “Never.” I leaned back. “Sierra is a gold mine. $600k isn’t enough for a kid, for a future. We need to think big.” He was silent, eyes red. “Chase, I’m doing this for us. For our family,” I said softly. “The opportunity is right there. Are you willing to do the work?”

  • Off Script: The Hated Girlfriend

I’m the C-list model the entire internet loves to hate, yet somehow, I’m the one who officially bagged the A-list Movie Star. Right now, the production crew has installed hidden cameras all over our house for a livestream. The catch? I have absolutely no idea. On the screen, Liam Sterling walks up to me, looking cold and annoyed. “Are you reading that novel again?” The chat room goes wild with hate comments. “Chloe Hart is always staging these fake lovey-dovey moments. Finally, her true colors are showing.” “Liam looks so done with her.” Liam’s parents and his younger sister are glued to their phones, watching the stream. “If Chloe is really as trashy as the tabloids say,” his mother mutters, “we have to make them break up, by any means necessary.” But in the living room, unaware of the millions watching, I don’t act like the doting girlfriend everyone expects. I shove the Hollywood heartthrob away impatiently. “Move. You’re blocking my light.” Liam stumbles back a step. Instead of getting mad, he leans in closer, his voice dropping to a pathetic, puppy-dog whine. “Is my Chlo-Chlo sick of me already?” … 1 The day I went public with Liam Sterling, the internet tried to bury me alive. I trended on Twitter for three days straight—and not in a good way. “What is happening? I’ve been shipping Liam and Tessa for years! How is this real?” “Chloe Hart has no shame. She knows Liam and Tessa Lane are childhood sweethearts, yet she still wedged herself in there!” My boyfriend, Liam, is the youngest actor to ever win Best Actor at the Oscars. Tessa Lane is America’s Sweetheart, the top pop star and actress. They grew up together. They filmed together. Liam, usually a recluse, even went on variety shows just for her. They were the Nation’s Power Couple. Until I, the “manipulative gold-digger,” ruined everything. On the day of our announcement, Tessa was interviewed on set. With a brave smile, she said, “Liam and Chloe are… well, I’m sure they’re happy.” Then she turned around, and a single, perfect tear rolled down her cheek. The paparazzi caught it in 4K. The internet exploded. They claimed I used dirty tactics to trap him. They said his family hated me. To be fair, they weren’t entirely wrong. Liam’s parents are old-money business tycoons. They’ve always been cold to me. His sister, Lily, is a high schooler who refuses to say my name, referring to me only as “that Instagram model.” There’s even a Twitter account called “Did Liam Dump Chloe Today?” that tracks my every move. But honestly? I didn’t care. Liam and I were solid. He was killing it in Hollywood. I had my own modeling gigs—my “villain” reputation actually got me more bookings. I had a hot guy in my bed and money in the bank. Why would I care what strangers thought? I just stayed offline. I just didn’t expect them to hate me this much. Apparently, Liam’s agent booked him for a “Day in the Life” livestream to promote his new movie. Liam agreed. He just forgot to tell me. So, while I was lounging on the sofa in an oversized, ratty T-shirt, the cameras started rolling. 2 “That model doesn’t know about the livestream… what if she says something stupid and ruins Liam’s career?” Lily Sterling stared anxiously at her phone screen. Liam had just come back from a long shoot. He waved briefly at the camera, then ignored it. The chat, however, was on fire. “I can’t believe we get to see inside Liam’s house!” “Do you think Chloe will show up?” “God, I hope not. My eyes can’t handle the trash.” “Don’t worry, guys. This stream will expose her. We’ll finally see what a nightmare she is!” Liam’s parents were watching, too. “If she really is as awful as the rumors say,” his dad grumbled, “we need to intervene.” They didn’t know me well. They respected Liam’s choices, but the rumors were getting to them. “This is a good opportunity,” his mom added. “We’ll see the truth.” Totally oblivious, I walked through the front door, kicked off my heels, showered, and flopped onto the sofa in my bathrobe to read. Liam walked out of the bedroom, poured a glass of water, and stood over me. I knew he was there, but the plot twist in my book was getting spicy, so I ignored him. When I didn’t acknowledge him, he reached out and flicked my bangs. “Are you reading that novel again?” The comments section flooded the screen so fast you couldn’t see the video. “If I were Liam, working hard all day, I’d be pissed if my girlfriend ignored me.” “Does she not know who pays the bills? Show some respect to the sugar daddy.” “Her free ride is over. Just watch, he’s going to dump her live.” Everyone expected me to apologize or grovel. After all, I was the “lucky” one, right? Without looking up, I shoved him. “Move. You’re blocking my light.” Liam frowned. His bottom lip jutted out slightly. “Is my Chlo-Chlo sick of me already?” … The chat room went dead silent. Lily felt dizzy. She rubbed her eyes. What the hell? Did I just see my stoic, ice-cold brother… pout? Gross. 3 I sensed the dip in his mood immediately. I looked up. His face was inches from mine. I could see myself in his amber eyes. I tried to push his chest, but he was like a brick wall. And he was running hot. I knew the signs. Liam was having one of his “episodes.” Since we started dating, he couldn’t handle being ignored. If I zoned out, he would do this—stare at me like a statue until I paid attention. He puts on a good show for the public. The perfect gentleman. The unshakeable star. But it’s all a mask. Underneath, he’s a needy, clingy mess. It was annoying, but easy to fix. A kiss. A hug. That’s all it took to reset him to “Cool Movie Star” mode. I sighed, put down the book, wrapped my arms around his arm, and rested my head on his shoulder. “How could I ever be sick of my handsome hubby?” Liam’s ears turned pink. He pushed me away gently and turned his head, refusing to look at me. The chat was confused. “Um… what is wrong with Liam?” “Is he… throwing a tantrum?” “This has to be scripted. Remember when Tessa tried to hug him and he dodged her? He hates clingy people.” “Poor Liam, acting is hard work.” “Okay, but why is his face so red?” 4 The internet was convinced this was some meta-acting performance. Lily wasn’t so sure. She knew her brother. He had boundaries. He wouldn’t degrade himself like this for traffic. And honestly, she couldn’t believe he agreed to the livestream in the first place. “Is that a body double?” Liam’s dad asked, bewildered. Liam had always been mature beyond his years. Seeing him blush and flirt was breaking their brains. “I can’t watch this,” a commenter wrote. “It makes me sick seeing a homewrecker this happy.” “Justice for Tessa! Chloe isn’t fit to tie her shoes!” 5 Liam was still being awkward. I knew he’d get over it, so I went back to my book. But he wouldn’t let me be. He tugged my sleeve. He poked my cheek. I swatted his hand away. He did it again. Finally, I snapped. I grabbed a pillow and stood up. “Where are you going?” he asked, panic in his voice. “Somewhere else. You’re being annoying.” “I’m annoying?” He looked devastated. I didn’t answer. I marched toward the bedroom. “Wait… Liam is actually a clingy boyfriend?” “Why does it feel like he loves her way more than she loves him?” “Don’t be fooled by Chloe’s fans! She’s manipulating him!” “Okay, but their house is actually cute. I thought Liam lived in a minimalist museum.” Lily had never been to this house. The family mansion was cold and gray. But this place? Warm lighting, throw pillows, and an entire wall covered in Polaroids. The camera zoomed in. They were all photos of Liam and Chloe. In every single one, Liam was smiling like an idiot. Lily felt a weird pang in her chest. She had never seen her brother look that happy.

  • Glitch in the Loop: I Slapped the Villain to Save My Paycheck

The heroine failed to save the hero. Again. I opened my eyes, and once again, I was back in senior year of high school. As a background NPC, my resentment was strong enough to fuel a rocket. I stormed past the male lead and slapped him across the face. “Why do you look like you want to die all day long? In the future, you’ll have money, power, and a beautiful wife who loves you! What is there to be depressed about?!” “I have taken the SATs ninety-nine times! Every single time I finally get promoted from a minimum-wage intern to a decent salary, you drag me back to high school! Do you know how tragic my life is?!” The boy in the blue and white uniform stared at me, his eyes dark and shadowed with menace. At that exact moment, a floating comment barrage screamed across my vision: [WE ARE DOOMED! You didn’t slap the hero! That’s the vengeful, psychopathic Villain!] 1 I’m back in senior year. Again. Staring at the familiar classroom and my classmates, I felt nothing but the urge to lay down and rot. The stacks of textbooks and open workbooks on my desk made my vision go black. Does anyone understand the pain of infinitely repeating your senior year? The worst part is, my brain resets every time. I never remember the answers to the tests I’ve taken a hundred times. This means my rebirth is nothing but the pure, unadulterated torture of finals week, on repeat. Even more tragic? The reset always happens right when I grind my way from a $2,000 monthly salary to a comfortable $5,000. I haven’t even seen a five-figure paycheck yet, and poof. Instant death. Because the main character doesn’t want to live anymore. The whole world gets buried with him. And I’m just one of the unlucky collateral damages. 2 After many resets, I gained self-awareness. I realized I am a “Mob Character” or “Passerby A” in a redemption novel. No name, no lines, just a background texture. The world I live in is a book. Because the heroine keeps failing to “save” the hero, he dies. So the world reboots. Rumor has it the hero is mentally unstable. I just want to say, if you’re sick, go to a hospital! The heroine isn’t a therapist! And why does his death have to involve me, a hardworking corporate slave? The protagonists get rich without me. But when they die, they drag me to hell with them. I’m basically being pranked by Fate. “Monthly test results come out tomorrow. Ugh, so annoying.” “I bet Sawyer is going to be first place again.” “Jenna? You look pale. Are you okay?” My desk mate looked at me with concern. The name Sawyer twitched a nerve in my numb brain. I shot up from my seat. Under my desk mate’s shocked gaze, fueled by the rage of a hundred senior years, I marched to the classroom next door. In the last row by the door, a boy was sleeping face down on his desk. The girl next to him looked at me—radiating pure fury—and asked cautiously, “Classmate… can I help you?” I scanned her face. It was the heroine, Lana. The book said she sits next to the hero, Sawyer. Staring at the back of the “hero’s” perfect skull, my hands itched. I wanted to crush him. Seeing me staring death daggers at him, Lana hesitated, then nudged the sleeping boy. He lifted his head from his arms, looking annoyed at Lana for disturbing him. Lana pointed at me standing in the doorway and whispered, “Someone’s looking for you.” The boy in the uniform slowly turned around. Driven by pure resentment, my hand moved faster than my brain. Smack! I slapped him right across the face. Then I exploded. “Sleep? How can you sleep?! Do you have no shame?!” “Because of you, I have to relive this hellish senior year over and over! I have anxiety! I have insomnia!” “I’ve taken the SATs ninety-nine times! Every time I finally get a raise, you drag me back here!” “Why do I have to suffer because you want to die?” “Don’t look at me like that! If you’re sick, go to therapy!” “If you don’t want to live the good life, I’ll slap you until you wake up!” “You look like a corpse all day long! In the future, you have money, power, and a hot wife who loves you! Why would you want to die?!” Lana’s jaw dropped to the floor. The boy I just slapped had a face that defied gravity. Sharp brows, starry eyes, a small beauty mark on a high nose bridge. Noble and cold. Except now, there was a glaring red handprint on that pale, handsome face. He stared at me, his expression dark and shadowy. His eyes were ferocious. Suddenly, strange text floated in front of my eyes: [OMG! Girl, you hit the wrong person! That’s Julian! The vindictive, world-destroying Villain!] [It’s over! You won’t see tomorrow’s sun!] [Such heavy resentment. Senior year + Corporate Slave = Maximum Bug. I’d want to kill someone too.] [But that’s not the hero! That’s the villain, Julian!] My heart stopped. Julian. The “Beautiful, Strong, and Miserable” villain. Wealthy family. Insanely handsome. But his parents were two psychos forced into a business marriage who hated each other. They viewed Julian, the product of their hatred, with disgust. They tortured him growing up. In the book, Julian is a sociopath. He lacks empathy and craves destruction. Later, he gets involved in organized crime. He is ruthless. As an NPC, I only knew the names. I never had screen time with them. I didn’t know what they looked like, except for Lana, who becomes a celebrity later. Facing Julian’s terrifying gaze, I took a step back. His voice was colder than liquid nitrogen. “You dare hit me? Do you want to die?” When others say this, they’re posing. When Julian says it, he’s making a schedule. What do I do? What do I do? My brain spun like a hamster wheel on fire. The floating comments seemed to hear my inner scream and offered a solution: [The villain is scary, but he’s a pure-hearted simp for love!] [Baby, tell him you’re his future wife! He’ll spare you!] [Yes, yes! It explains why you were scolding him about the future!] Suppressing my terror, I stood my ground and shouted, “So what if I hit you! I’m your future wife!” “In the future, you beg me to hit you!” Julian sneered, the corner of his lip curling up. “Are you crazy? My wife? You?” “Do you think I’m an idiot?” [Quick! Tell him a secret! The villain has a scar on his inner thigh, he’s allergic to shrimp, loves drinking Yakult, and sleeps completely naked!] Bless you, comment section angels. I composed myself and said calmly, “You have a scar on your inner thigh.” Julian’s pupils shrank. The murderous aura vanished, replaced by shock. I continued, “You’re allergic to shrimp. You secretly love drinking Yakult.” I added some flavor: “And after we get married, you never wear clothes when you sleep with me. Pants…” Julian shot up from his chair. He clamped his hand over my mouth. His eyes flickered with uncertainty as he scrutinized me. I pulled his hand down. “And when you shower, you like to start by taking off…” He covered my mouth again. I noticed his ears were red. He gritted his teeth. “Shut up!” I went quiet. His long, beautiful eyes were filled with a mix of shame and anger. His lips were pressed into a thin line. The red finger marks on his face gave him a sort of tragic beauty. Faced with the villain’s breathtaking face this close up, I was stunned for three seconds. My eyes went wide and sparkly. Julian seemed uncomfortable under my gaze. Suppressing his irritation, he used his other hand to cover my eyes. “Don’t look at me like that.” “Only a fool would believe that ‘future wife’ nonsense.” “But… considering you claim to be my wife, I’ll let the slap slide. But I’m warning you: stay away from the current me.” Me: … Do you really not believe it? You might want to listen to your own heartbeat right now. 3 Julian warned me to stay away. So I did. I avoided him for a week. During that week, I found the real hero, Sawyer. Unlike what I imagined, Sawyer looked gentle and upright, though his brows were always knit with melancholy. I observed him for days. He seemed normal. Not like a mental patient. I was worried. I had no idea how to stop his suicidal tendencies. I really, really didn’t want to do senior year again. Sitting on the bleachers, I stared at Sawyer on the basketball court with deep resentment. To onlookers, my gaze probably looked… obsessed. Julian, wearing a basketball jersey, watched me from a distance. His face was cold. After shooting a few three-pointers, he tossed the ball to someone else and walked straight toward me. His tall shadow blocked my view. I looked up. I was mesmerized by his handsomeness for three seconds before I slowly asked, “What?” The storm clouds on Julian’s face cleared slightly during those three seconds of my admiration. He crouched down, his tone unkind. “Why are you looking at Sawyer?” I answered instinctively, “Why can’t I look?” Julian narrowed his eyes. It made my scalp tingle. He lowered his voice. “You were lying, weren’t you?” My heart skipped a beat. “I’ve never seen you before. You aren’t my type.” “It’s impossible that I liked you first. That means you must have chased me until I gave in.” “But you haven’t made a single move on me. You don’t look like someone in love.” “Also, that day you came to find me, my back was to you. The seat I was in used to be Sawyer’s. You’ve been staring at Sawyer for days. So… you were looking for Sawyer that day, weren’t you?” Julian’s analysis made my skin crawl. Why is he suddenly Sherlock Holmes?! Right. He’s the villain. High IQ is part of the package. Julian stared into my eyes, not missing a single micro-expression. Help me! Comment section fam! [It’s here! Don’t panic, baby!] [The villain has a kissing kink! He likes to trace the roof of your mouth with his tongue when he’s done!] [Yes! And he demands kisses every day. He’s a kissing monster.] [Bedroom, kitchen, bar counter, floor-to-ceiling window… he begs you for *** (censored) in every corner.] Hm? Something seems off about this advice? But my nerves were frayed. I didn’t have time to think. I blurted it out. “You have a habit when we kiss. At the end, you like to lick the roof of my mouth.” After saying it, the heat rushed to my face. I turned beet red. Julian looked slightly stunned. Then he recovered and scoffed. “You can really make things up.” His expression changed, as if recalling something disgusting. His eyes went pitch black. “Do you know that I find kissing to be the most repulsive human act?” My survival instincts kicked in. I went all in. “That’s because you haven’t kissed me yet.” “I don’t believe you. Let’s kiss then.” Ripples of emotion stirred in Julian’s eyes. His gaze dropped to my lips. On the surface, I looked calm. Inside, I was screaming. What if he actually does it? Do I dodge? If I dodge, I’m exposed. If I don’t… I lose my first kiss AND get exposed if he hates it. I hoped Julian would back off. But he just leaned in, inch by inch. My body went rigid. My brain flatlined. Thump. Thump. Thump. In my vision, Julian tilted his head. I could feel his breath on the bridge of my nose. Just centimeters away. My hand twitched. “Hah. Keep dreaming.” Julian pulled back abruptly, laughing at my flushed red face. “You thought I’d fall for that?” “Is this how you hooked the future me? I admit, you have some tricks.” My tense nerves snapped loose. I was confused. How did I hook him? Tricks? I frowned, thinking. To Julian, my confusion looked like disappointment from a failed scheme. He stood up, looking down at me arrogantly. “Tsk. You like me that much?” “I have a game this weekend. Come bring me water.” 4 My beautiful weekend was hijacked just like that. I wanted to refuse, but I had to maintain my character. After lunch, I waited until the hottest part of the day passed before lazily biking to the gym. Surprisingly, it was packed. I spotted Lana, the heroine, in the front row. To figure out why her redemption arc kept failing, I decided to befriend her. I sat in the empty seat next to her and introduced myself. She paused, then smiled back. “Are you here to cheer for Julian?” I recognized the gleam in her eyes. It was the universal look of someone ready for gossip. I nodded. If the heroine is here, the hero must be too. Sure enough, I saw Sawyer in a white jersey. And Julian, wearing a black sports headband, looking fierce. He glared at me. [OMG, Julian has been waiting for our girl! He keeps looking at the stands.] [He says ‘stay away,’ but gets mad when you actually do. Tsk tsk, what a tsundere puppy.] [By the way, this game is where the villain and hero start their feud. It plants the seed of hatred.] [The heroine’s redemption fails because of the villain.] I remembered now. In the plot, Sawyer wins this game. Julian loses, and in the post-game brawl, Sawyer accidentally breaks Julian’s hand. Julian, being petty and vengeful, loses face and gets injured. He hates Sawyer forever and sabotages him in the future. The first revenge is causing Sawyer to miss the SATs. Terrifying. But why did the comments say the redemption failed because of Julian? Can you guys be more specific?! Stopping halfway is torture!

  • Taming the Moon: My Mad Love with the Senator

I was the dog bought by Young Master Sterling, the wildest one. He tormented me daily with endless enthusiasm. His wealthy, hedonistic friends loved to join in, treating me like their personal toy. One day, this mad dog bit down on Sterling’s lifeline. I smiled at the stunned crowd. “If you want him to live, tell Senator Vance to come see me personally.” They say Senator Vance is benevolent, a saint who loves the world, a moon in the sky too pure to be touched. I want to ask him, why has this world—specifically me, tortured by his nephew until life was worse than death—never received his mercy? Is he blind? Then I’ll drag him down from his pedestal and gouge his eyes out. 1 On my first day in this world, my gambler father sold me to a high-end brothel. For five grand, he skipped away with a grin. On my first night, I was bought for a high price by Sterling Vance. Why? Because I look exactly like his “white moonlight,” his lost love, Claire. Originally, I was supposed to be a warm body in his bed. But I was born with a rebellious streak; I couldn’t bend my knee. I told Sterling, “If you touch me, you’re just a dirty cucumber. How could a filthy, shameless man like you ever deserve someone as pure as her?” Sterling lost it. “You? A cheap whore? You think I’d actually want you?” He didn’t touch me. Instead, he treated me like a dog. He told his rich buddies he bought a new pet for everyone to play with. He locked me in a cage, made me bark for their amusement. If I didn’t perform well, I didn’t eat. I stayed locked inside, teeth clenched, refusing to make a sound. They dangled meat bones in front of me, cooing, “Bark once, and you get a treat.” I closed my eyes and stayed silent. Sterling and his friends bet on how long I would last. His friend Tyler bet I’d break in two days. Another rich kid, Xavier, bet one day. Xavier brought a cage of snakes and held it to my face. “Scared? Just say you’re scared, call me ‘Big Brother,’ and beg for mercy. I’ll let you out.” Sterling laughed lazily from the side, but his eyes held a threatening glint. He had bet on three days. I looked at the hissing snakes and closed my eyes. Xavier raised an eyebrow, opened the cage, and let the snakes slither into mine. My body went rigid, my scalp tingled, and I couldn’t stop trembling. A snake crawled up my arm, cold and slimy. I looked at Sterling. A flicker of interest sparked in his eyes. I closed my eyes again until a sharp, numbing pain hit me. I was bitten. “Enough, Xavier!” The cage opened, and Xavier’s servants took the snakes back. “Got a backbone, huh? Interesting.” “What? Is Sterling feeling sorry for his pet?” Before I blacked out, I heard Sterling’s cold voice: “Get out with your disgusting snakes.” This was only the first day. I had to last three. 2 When I woke up, my arm was bandaged. My head spun. I was still in the cage. My hands were free, but my ankles were chained. Sterling sat opposite me, sipping tea. “You thought I’d let you out? Puppies stay where they belong.” He smiled cruelly. Servants brought in food. Sterling ate meat and drank wine in front of me, dragging the meal out painfully. A bitter taste lingered in my mouth—they had force-fed me medicine while I was out. So I wouldn’t die just yet. I closed my eyes and slept. Soon, Tyler and Xavier returned. Day two. Tyler brought a large dog. Sterling glanced at it but said nothing, implying: As long as you don’t go too far. Xavier, the worst of the lot, looked at the dog, then at me. “Since they’re both dogs, and Tyler’s is male… why don’t we let them breed?” Tyler spat out his tea, eyeing me with disgusting intent. “Blackie loves riding dogs. He hasn’t ridden a human one yet.” They laughed until Xavier was in tears. Friends of Sterling were all trash. Sterling, the hypocrite, tried to hold back but eventually chuckled. A wave of nausea hit me. I didn’t regret rejecting him. “Take your damn dog and get out,” Sterling finally said. “See? told you Sterling treasures her!” Xavier jeered. Sterling glared at him. Tyler whispered something in Sterling’s ear. They muttered, eyes fixed on me, grinning maliciously. Then, another dog was brought in. A female. They put both dogs into my cage. The male dog immediately mounted the female. The cage was cramped; the dogs bumped against me repeatedly. I shrank back in disgust. Suddenly, a hand grabbed my chin, forcing my face toward the scene. “Watch closely.” Sterling’s grip tightened. I was forced to witness it while Sterling watched me with amusement. Pervert. I couldn’t hold it back. I vomited all over Sterling’s hand. Seeing his face turn green, I laughed. 3 After vomiting, Sterling threw me into “the dark room.” Still in the cage. Pitch black. Leaning against the bars, I recalled the plot that had appeared in my brain when I arrived. The original owner of this body was named Rain. Born during a rainstorm. I am also named Rain. This is a melodramatic novel. Rain is the heroine. Her gambler dad sells her; Sterling, the hero, buys her. Sterling’s true love, Claire, just married a prince. Heartbroken, Sterling sees Rain and thinks she’s Claire. He buys her, forces himself on her. He treats her as a substitute, abuses her body and heart. Through all the humiliation, Rain falls in love with him, suffers miscarriages, and eventually leaves. Only then does Sterling realize he loves her. He chases her, more angst ensues, and they live happily ever after. Sterling, despite being trash, rises to high office. Why? Because he has an incredible uncle: Senator Vance. Vance is a legend. Honorable, unmatched, practically a saint. He is Sterling’s fear and idol. Vance is only nine years older than Sterling; he’s more like a father. Vance became a top scholar at sixteen, bringing glory to their humble family. At twenty-four, he helped the current President get elected. Now, at twenty-seven, he is the youngest Secretary of State in history, unmarried, and beloved by the people. But in less than two years, he dies of illness. Overworked and stressed from cleaning up the country’s messes, he falls ill during a mission and never recovers. The President, grieving, projects his love for Vance onto Sterling, paving the way for the nephew’s success. Damn plot armor. But the plot glitched. The original Rain died from a beating at the brothel. I took over. I refuse to play out this sadistic romance. I’d rather die. But this dark room… it’s torture. I don’t know if I’ll go mad or die first. 4 I don’t know how long passed before a bucket of cold water woke me up. Light flooded in. It took a long time to focus on Sterling’s disgusting, handsome face. He dragged me out. I felt dizzy and nauseous. “Vomit on me again, and I’ll chop you up for dog food!” he snarled. I didn’t even have the strength to open my eyes. Vaguely, I felt someone supporting me. A delicious smell filled my nose. Someone was spoon-feeding me meat porridge. It smelled so good… I ate and slowly came back to life. Then I saw Sterling holding the bowl. Ugh. He put the bowl down, surprisingly silent, and left. Once he was gone, I couldn’t hold back. I devoured the rest of the porridge. This was my first real meal since arriving. Sterling had starved me, then fed me medicine. It was dawn on the third day. Sterling bet I would break on the third day. If I hadn’t tasted food, maybe I could have held on. But now, having felt the warmth of a full stomach… my resolve crumbled. I couldn’t hold on anymore. After I finished the bowl, I heard a scoff. Sterling walked back in, dragged me up, and threw me back in the cage. Outside, I heard Tyler and Xavier. They were here to see the result of the bet.

  • The Side Character Complex

I am the daughter of the classic, universally adored, “Mary Sue” protagonist. But me? I’m just the side character. However, I grew up inheriting that same irresistible “Main Character Energy.” The ice-cold school heartthrob glares resentfully while putting on my shoes, yet the tips of his ears burn crimson. The rebellious bad boy squats pitifully before me, feeding me boba tea, his eyes hiding a deep obsession. The proud, stoic valedictorian begrudgingly massages my shoulders and legs, his face cold, yet his hands refuse to leave my skin. In the eyes of the original novel’s heroine, these boys are being coerced. She wants to save them. I just sit back, relax, and loosen the leash. I’d like to see if they run to their “savior” or if they happily slip the collar right back on. 1 “Luna Sterling, you’ve gone too far!” I propped my chin on my hand, lazily watching the girl in front of me launch her accusations. Ah, the heroine has arrived. Right on schedule. It’s a pity I’m neither cannon fodder nor the villainess. I’m the universally adored side character. My mom was the legendary Mary Sue of the last generation’s romance novel. I inherited her halo. But technically, I’m still a supporting role. Which is annoying, but fine. Because the plot glitched in my favor, letting me awaken early. And this girl in front of me? She’s the “original” heroine, Emma Snow. “We’re all classmates! How can you bully Julian and the others like this?” Emma pointed a righteous finger at me, her eyes filled with pity as she looked at the three stunning guys surrounding me. I stayed silent, amused, and glanced at my entourage. Julian Frost, the icy heartthrob, looking resentful as he buckled my sandal. Wyatt Stone, the wild bad boy, squatting with a constipated expression as he held my straw to my lips. Caleb Rivers, the disciplined scholar, massaging my calves with a face like he was doing calculus. Emma’s indignation was practically spilling over. I twirled a lock of hair around my finger. As expected of a Mary Sue Saintess heroine. So full of pity. But only for the male leads. Because yes, the three guys waiting on me hand and foot are the male leads of her story. But from where I’m sitting, I’m not bullying anyone. Julian’s ears are blazing red. Wyatt’s “resentful” glare is actually just obsessed puppy eyes. And Caleb’s hands? They’re stuck to me like glue. I’ve dealt with this kind of attention since kindergarten. It’s just another Tuesday. I stepped on Julian’s knee to adjust my shoe, took a sip of Wyatt’s tea, and shook off Caleb’s hands. Crossing my arms, I looked down at Emma. “Let’s make a bet.” “What bet?” Emma asked, her jaw set with determination. I examined my fresh manicure. “Let’s bet on whether or not they’re being bullied willingly.” “If you can convince them to stay away from me, you win.” “If I lose, I’ll stop ‘bullying’ them forever.” I emphasized the word “bullying.” Because I don’t see it that way. I see it as rewarding my loyal dogs. I’m not blind. I know these guys secretly love it. Suddenly, a rhinestone popped off my nail. I frowned at my hand, annoyed. “You three. Don’t come looking for me for a while.” One of them must have knocked it loose. Clumsy. I turned and walked away. Emma let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding and rushed to the boys. “Are you guys okay?” Nobody paid her any attention. The three guys looked miserable. Julian’s handsome face darkened. “Mind your own business.” Wyatt sneered, his sharp features twisting in annoyance. “Who asked you to save me?” Caleb’s expression was frosty. “You’re annoying.” They all walked off in different directions. Emma stood frozen. She couldn’t understand why the boys she just “saved” were suddenly so prickly. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. 2 I returned to my family’s massive villa for hugs and kisses from Mom. In my room, sitting on my pink princess bed, I binged some trashy romance dramas. My young butler knelt by the bed, peeling grapes for me. His gaze was intense, burning with obsession. I was used to it. The “Main Character Halo” meant everyone loved me. I’ve had countless admirers since I was a kid. The butler was just one of many. If he wasn’t so handsome, I wouldn’t even let him in here. “Miss Luna, your juice.” I took a sip and frowned. “It’s warm. Gross.” This specific juice tastes awful if it isn’t ice-cold. The butler took the glass, lowered his head, and sipped from the exact spot my lips had touched. “I’ll make you a fresh one, Miss.” I flared up instantly. “Who said you could drink from my glass?!” “I apologize, Miss. I… couldn’t resist.” He lowered his head, his neck flushing red, his voice strained with repressed desire. “You held it in before, you can hold it in now.” “Even if you’re about to explode, hold it.” I warned him mercilessly. Then I waved my hand in dismissal. “Get out. And throw that cup away.” “Yes, Miss.” He retreated, eyes lowered. I knew he wouldn’t throw the cup away. Anything I discard, he secretly hoards. Total freak. Mom was right. Men are dangerous because they’re always throwing themselves at you. I trust Mom implicitly. She was the heroine of the last book, after all. I inherited her charm, but unfortunately, I’m trapped in a side character role. The butler is loyal and hot, so I let his creepiness slide. “Wait.” I stopped him at the door. “Miss?” He turned, attentive. “When Caleb gets home, send him to my room.” “Miss?!” The butler looked shocked. “Did you hear me?” My voice was crisp, my face innocent but impatient. “Understood.” The butler gripped the tray so hard his knuckles turned white, jealousy twisting his features. I ignored him and went back to my drama. Know thy enemy, win the battle. 3 That night, there was a knock at my door. “Come in.” Through the sheer curtains of my canopy bed, I saw Caleb enter. He stood tall, cold, and distant, acting like the perfect gentleman. I rolled my eyes. Gentleman? This morning his hands were wandering all over my legs. Hypocrite. But I wanted to test the plot. Does the “original script” force the three male leads to fall for the heroine and abandon me? Not that I care about being abandoned. The Sterling family runs this city. The original novel said that after the boys fell for Emma, “Luna fled the country in shame.” Hilarious. I, Luna Sterling, could fail anywhere, but never in this city. “Caleb.” I called out from behind the veil. He finally moved, his voice raspy. “Why did you call me?” “Come here.” I pulled back the curtain, extending a pale wrist. Caleb froze. He walked over hesitantly. When he saw me, his pupils dilated. The tips of his ears turned pink, and he looked away. “Luna, put some clothes on…” “Help me.” I turned around, exposing the zipper on the back of my black mini-dress. He didn’t move for a long time. Just when I was about to get annoyed, hot fingers brushed my skin. The sound of the zipper sliding down was deafening in the quiet room. “Done.” His cool voice was thick with something else. I chuckled and turned to face him. “Kneel.” I commanded. I hate looking up at him. I’m the only one allowed to look down. Caleb’s face remained impassive as he obediently dropped to one knee. “Say it. What are you to me?” I rested my chin on my hand, watching him. “I am… your servant.” He closed his eyes as he said it, his neck flushing a humiliating shade of pink. “Good. Remember that, Caleb. You are Luna Sterling’s servant.” Like any standard Mary Sue male lead, Caleb has a backstory that requires saving. At least, that’s what Emma thinks. I think I treat him great. His mom is our housekeeper, so we grew up together. He’s my little servant. Of the three boys, Julian is a high school friend, but Wyatt and Caleb are my childhood friends. They’ve always obeyed me. Because I’m me. I thought our dynamic was perfect. But Emma thinks I’m a bully. So, I’ll show her what bullying really looks like. If I can’t avoid the plot, I’ll ride it. I want to see if these three really have it in them to fall for her. “You heard about the bet with Emma, right?” I twirled my hair idly. Caleb’s voice was low, his face shadowed. “Yes. I heard.” “Then watch yourself. If I lose…” I narrowed my eyes threateningly. “I’ll make you pay.” “I won’t let you lose…” He mumbled it so quietly I almost missed it. I saw beads of sweat on his forehead. He looked like he was overheating. “Is my room too hot? You’re sweating.” Caleb opened his mouth to explain, but his face turned beet red. He shifted his kneeling leg slightly. Silence. I waved my hand, disgusted. “Leave. Don’t sweat in my room.” Caleb let out a breath and practically fled. Outside, he leaned against the wall, gasping for air. He looked down at his white shirt, soaked through with sweat. His phone buzzed. Group Chat: [The Princess’s Dogs] Julian: [Is she mad?] Caleb: [Yeah. Just left her room. She’s annoyed.] Wyatt: [It’s all that meddling Emma’s fault! Tomorrow, I’m putting on her shoes. Don’t fight me on this.] Julian: [You wish.] Caleb: […Scram.] 4 I spent the weekend at home gaming and binging dramas. I didn’t message any of them. Today was a key “bonding event” in the original plot for Emma and the boys. I wasn’t going to interfere. I loosened the leash. Whether they run or stay is up to them. A well-trained dog doesn’t run. But hey, maybe they’re wolves in disguise. I won my game. The drama on TV was getting to the part where the male leads get into a fight and the heroine saves them. Suddenly, my phone rang. “Hello? Wyatt?” My face fell. He wants me to bail him out? What is the heroine doing? Sleeping on the job? I drove to the police station, fuming. All three of them were there. So was Emma. Julian, Wyatt, and Caleb were bruised and battered. I couldn’t even look at them. I signed the papers and led them out.

  • The Serpent’s Bride

My mother raised a black snake, treating it as preciously as her own eyes. When the black snake grew larger, my mother said it was an adult now and deserved a wife of its own. That same night, my mother placed the black snake into my sister’s bed. My sister looked at her with pleading eyes. My mother, however, claimed that serving the black snake was my sister’s blessing and, without further ado, tied my sister to the bed. Chapter 1 The next day when I went to my sister’s room, the scene inside gave me a huge fright. My sister was curled up in a corner, her face ghastly pale. The snow-white bedsheets were stained with sporadic traces of blood. My mother, beaming with joy, stroked the black snake’s head and said, “I’ve given you my eldest daughter. “When will my Big Dragon come back?” Hearing my mother’s words, I shuddered all over. Big Dragon was my older brother, who died in a car accident three years ago. That was also when my mother started raising this black snake. The black snake hissed at my mother twice, flicking its tongue. Then it slid out of my mother’s hands. It slithered towards the underside of my sister’s skirt. My sister looked at my mother with horror, trying to get up, but was ruthlessly pinned down by her: “First time’s a stranger, second time’s a friend. “What are you pretending for! It’s not like you haven’t done it before.” My sister shook her head, tears in her eyes. My mother seemed to soften a bit, lowering her voice: “Good daughter, serve the Black Immortal well. “Making him happy enough to send your brother back is better than anything.” The black snake disappeared under my sister’s skirt. My sister’s face was deathly pale. After a while, she started whimpering. The expression on her face was indistinguishable between pain and pleasure. My mother spat fiercely on the ground. Muttering curses like: “Little hussy. “Just now you were saying no, no. “Now you’re comfortable, aren’t you?” Chapter 2 That night, I was sleeping in a daze. When I opened my eyes, I saw a dark figure standing by my bed. Startled, I was about to scream when a hand firmly covered my mouth. I looked closely and saw it was my sister. Her hair was disheveled, and her hands were icy cold. Her whole being radiated a chill. After I promised not to make a sound, my sister released her hand. Clutching the quilt, I shrank towards the inside of the bed, shivering as I said, “Sis, why are you so cold!” My sister smiled self-deprecatingly and said, “How warm can someone be after being defiled by that thing? “I came to tell you, run away while you can these next two days, or Mom won’t spare you?” I looked at my sister in horror: “Sis, but I’m a man.” “Heh!” The smile on my sister’s face grew wider, “Why would it care about gender? “And in Mom’s eyes, the two of us combined aren’t as important as Brother. If you don’t die from this, you’ll die from something else.” I opened my mouth but couldn’t say a word. Chapter 3 The next day, I was awakened by my mother’s screams. I hurriedly ran out to look. Only to find my sister dead. Wearing a bright red wedding dress, she had hanged herself from the beam of our house. My mother’s screams were so loud they attracted Third Uncle from next door. Seeing my sister’s body, Third Uncle swayed, nearly losing his footing. Then he said through gritted teeth: “Wearing red to hang herself, what does she want to do? “Does she want to become a vengeful ghost?” Seeing Third Uncle, my mother seemed to find her backbone. Sobbing, she said: “Big Dragon hasn’t come back yet, how could she die? “If she’s dead, what about Big Dragon?” Third Uncle slapped my mother across the face: “If we don’t deal with Jenny properly. “We’re all going to die, and you’re still thinking about Big Dragon.” My mother wanted to speak, but intimidated by Third Uncle’s authority, she could only shut her mouth obediently. Third Uncle circled my sister’s body three times to the left and three times to the right. Then he beckoned me over. I was somewhat afraid. But my mother kicked me towards him. Chapter 4 Unlike his fierce demeanor just now, Third Uncle changed his expression when facing me. He kindly patted my head: “River, your sister always treated you well. Tonight, you will keep vigil for her.” I shuddered in fear and waved my hands to refuse. But Third Uncle gave me no chance: “Your sister died a wrongful death. “If no family member accompanies her on her last journey tonight. “She will become a vengeful ghost, never to be reincarnated. “Do you have the heart for that? “And even if we take a step back, your sister treated you best when she was alive, she won’t treat you badly in death, she won’t do anything to you.” I still shook my head. My mother, however, went straight to the kitchen, grabbed a cleaver, and looked at me viciously: “If you don’t go, if you dare not go, I’ll chop you to death right now.” Terrified, I immediately fell silent, daring not refuse again. Third Uncle was very satisfied with my attitude. He patted my head: “Don’t worry, nothing will happen. “Taking a step back, a new ghost on the first day of passing isn’t that fierce.” Chapter 5 At night, I leaned against my sister’s coffin, trembling. After staring at my sister’s body for a while, I wasn’t so scared anymore; instead, I felt a bit sad. I wiped my tears and said, “Sis, no wonder you came to me last night. “Telling me to run away quickly, so you had this in mind. “Actually, it’s good that you died; dead, you won’t be defiled anymore. “Sis, keep your eyes open when you reincarnate next time. “Even being reincarnated as a pig or a dog is better than being born into our family.” While I was still muttering. The door suddenly burst open with a “bang.” I jumped up in fright. Calming myself, I saw it was my mother. Covered in the pitch-black night, I couldn’t see the expression on her face. Only when she came closer did I see that my mother was holding that black snake. My mother glanced at me first, then without a word, began to pull down my sister’s pants. Realizing what my mother intended to do. I hurriedly grabbed my mother’s hand, swallowed hard, and looked at her pleadingly: “Mom, my sister is already dead.” My mother stroked the snake’s head: “The Black Immortal wants it. “She has to serve me even in death.” Or, my mother suddenly changed the subject, staring at me with a sinister smile and said: “Or, you can do it too.” I was scared into a cold sweat by my mother’s smile. My hand unconsciously let go. In just that moment. The black snake had already slipped under my sister’s body. Half of the snake’s body was gone. I couldn’t bear to watch any longer. I turned and went out the door. I hadn’t been at the door for two minutes. When my mother’s scream came from the mourning hall. I shuddered all over with fright and hurriedly ran inside. As soon as I entered, I saw a pool of blood flowing from under my sister’s body. The snake’s body was broken in two. The snake head was outside, hissing and baring its fangs, but the tail was missing. My mother, pale-faced, cursed “bad luck.” Then she reached into my sister’s body and fumbled around. Finally, she pulled out the long snake tail. My mother pieced the snake head and tail together, stroking them with a heartbroken look. After confirming the snake wasn’t dead, my mother breathed a sigh of relief. Then she looked at me and said viciously: “Clean this place up. If anyone notices anything tomorrow, I’ll beat you to death.” I lowered my head and whispered, “I know.” Only then did my mother leave satisfied.

  • The Serpent’s Crown

For our Lunar New Year trip, my girlfriend, Sarah, booked us on an international tour. As soon as the plane touched down, she coaxed me onto a shuttle bus. We drove for two days and two nights. As the scenery became eerily familiar, my body started to tremble uncontrollably. This was the very hellhole I had escaped from four years ago. Sensing my panic, Sarah finally dropped the act. Her face twisted into a mask of cruelty as she told me she was selling me to a black-market factory run entirely by women. And the “Boss” she spoke of with such reverence? That was the head of the operation. My biological sister. I had spent twenty years planning my fake death to escape her clutches. I never imagined Sarah would be the one to drag me back. 1 Seeing me shake like a leaf, Sarah smiled—a gentle, terrifying smile. “Babe, didn’t you say you loved me? I owe a huge gambling debt. Just help me out, okay?” The thought of falling back into my sister’s hands made my voice quake. “Please… take me back. If you need money, I can give it to you! I’ll work, I’ll do anything to support you for the rest of my life!” Sarah’s expression darkened instantly. She spat out her words. “Do you think I have time to wait? I owe a fortune. If I don’t pay up in three days, they’ll kill me!” “I’ve supported you, you useless loser, for two years. It’s time you paid me back with interest!” Hearing her call me “useless” sent a fresh wave of terror through me. Years ago, one of my sister’s subordinates had called me useless behind my back because I wouldn’t crush an ant. My sister buried him in the dirt up to his neck, poured honey over his head, and let the ants eat him alive. If she heard Sarah talk to me like this, what would she do to her? Fear clawed at my throat as I looked at the woman I had loved for two years. Tears streamed down my face, unbidden. “You said we were going to build a home together. You said I was your favorite family…” Sarah’s warm hand caressed my cheek. Her words, however, were ice cold. “Exactly. Family helps family, right? So help me, babe.” I bit my lip and shook my head violently. A flicker of pity crossed Sarah’s eyes. “You know, you look so pathetic when you cry. It tugs at my heartstrings.” “You’re the most handsome boyfriend I’ve ever had. And the most naive.” “If I wasn’t so desperate for cash, I’d almost hate to sell you.” Her gaze hardened suddenly. “But you’re mine. I can’t stand the thought of other women touching you like that!” She lunged, pinning me to the floor of the bus. She pulled out a rope and bound my hands behind my back. Then, she drew a dagger from her pocket and waved it in front of my face. “Babe, you don’t want to be used by other women, do you? Let me help you with that.” The blade glinted. A line of fire seared across my cheek. “No!” I screamed in despair. My face… my sister was obsessed with my face! When I was a child, I knocked over boiling water and scalded my cheek. When the doctor said it might scar, my sister had the maid’s hands chopped off and threw her into a crocodile pit. She threatened to peel the doctor’s face off if he didn’t fix mine. She said I looked just like our dead father. My face was sacrosanct. Sarah had cut me. If my sister found out… I couldn’t think about it. I ignored the stinging pain. “Please! Don’t ruin my face!” Sarah laughed. “I already asked Red. She said men in the factory don’t need looks. As long as the machinery works, they’re good.” 2 Red? Could it be the same Red who joined the factory four years ago? Before I could process this, Sarah slashed my face again. Agony stole my voice. Blood ran into my eyes, turning the world red. “I know Red! Take me to her, please!” If Red saw me, she would force Sarah to take me back. She knew the consequences. Sarah paused, digging the knife deeper. “So you really weren’t loyal to me? You want to hook up with Red now?” “I’ll destroy this face. Let’s see you seduce anyone then!” I screamed until darkness took me. When I woke up, I was dumped at the factory gates. Sarah was talking to someone. It was Red! “Red!” I croaked her name through a ruined throat. Red looked surprised and turned to me. “How does he know my name?” Sarah’s face paled. She stomped on my mouth hard. “He probably heard me on the phone in the car. Don’t worry, knowing it won’t save him now.” Red pulled a cigarette from her pack and lit it. “Is that so? You wouldn’t dare play games. Is this the seventh one?” Sarah ground her heel into my lips before trotting over to light Red’s cigarette. “Seventh. Don’t worry, I know the rules.” “This kid is an orphan, no family. He’s the only one on his household registry. And he was a virgin when I got him!” Red squatted down, blew smoke in my face, and scrutinized me. A spark of hope ignited in my chest. She knows me. If she recognizes me, she’ll make Sarah take me away. If my sister finds out her subordinate kidnapped me, they’re all dead. “Tsk. Why did you mess up his face like that? He’s hideous.” Red looked disgusted and stood up. My heart sank. She didn’t recognize me! Did Sarah disfigure me beyond recognition? Grief overwhelmed me. I wanted to wail, but my throat felt stuffed with cotton. “He wouldn’t sit still. I was worried he’d use his looks to charm someone into helping him escape. So I ruined it. Doesn’t matter anyway, right?” Sarah crouched by my ear and whispered with a dark chuckle: “See? Give up on seducing Red. She thinks you’re ugly.” I used every ounce of strength to force words through my teeth. “You… will… die…” Red’s eyebrows shot up. She kicked Sarah aside and squatted in front of me, grinning. “Did this kid just curse us?” Looking at her sinister smile, I shook my head in terror. No! I meant you need to send me away! Or you’ll all die! “Ahhh—!” Red pinched my jaw open and jammed the lit cigarette into my mouth. The pain on my tongue was excruciating. The smell of burning flesh filled the air as I screamed. “Ugly freak. Dying and still trying to threaten us. Pah!” Red hawked a thick loogie onto my face. Sarah picked up a wooden stick from the ground and started stabbing into my mouth. “How dare you offend Red! Scream all you want!” Blood filled my mouth, mixing with splinters and choking me. I felt like I was drowning. Tears poured down my face like a waterfall. Is this it? Am I going to die here? “Enough. Teach him a lesson, but don’t kill him or I don’t get paid.” Red stopped her. Sarah dropped the bloody stick immediately. 3 “Right. Shall we go inside, sign the contract, and get the money?” Two massive guards hauled me up and dragged me toward the factory. A black sedan drove toward us. It was my sister’s car! I struggled frantically, throwing myself toward the wheels. The car stopped. My sister stepped out from the back seat. She looked down at me, brow furrowed. Sister, it’s me! It’s your brother! I tried to look up at her, begging silently. Red grabbed me by the hair and slapped me across the face. “Damn brat! How dare you startle the Boss!” The slap blinded me for a second. I spat blood. It landed on my sister’s high heels. Red turned white. She fell to her knees and started wiping the shoes with her sleeve. “I’m so sorry, Boss! The new guy is feisty. I’ll clean it right up!” Sarah knelt too, helping to wipe. My sister squinted at me lying on the ground. “Oh? Fresh meat?” “Yes. He’s unruly. To avoid trouble, we messed up his face. He even cursed us earlier!” Red answered carefully. My sister seemed amused. “Heh. First time anyone’s had the guts to talk trash here. Is he a college boy?” “Yes! Graduated this year. Top of his class!” Sarah interjected quickly. My sister looked thoughtful. She glanced at me and sighed. “If Dragon were still here, he’d be about graduating age too…” Hearing her use my childhood nickname, I started thrashing and wailing. Sis, it’s me! I’m Dragon! “Hey! Stay down!” Red kicked me hard, right in the face. The wounds split open again, blood oozing out. My mouth and tongue were pulp. I couldn’t speak, only make guttural noises of pain. “Hm?” My sister paused, squatting down to look closer. I was ecstatic. I tried to open my mouth to call her, but a cough racked my body and I sprayed blood. Right onto her face. Red and Sarah looked like they were about to have heart attacks. One pulled out tissues to wipe my sister’s face, the other dragged me away. Red saw a barrel of dirty water nearby. She hoisted me up. The next second, she shoved my head into the filth. Sludge filled my nose and mouth. I choked, my lungs burning. Just as I thought I was dead, she yanked me up by my hair. “You have a death wish, kid?! Disrespecting the Boss like that!” “I’m going to kill you right now as an apology!” I gasped for air for a few seconds before being plunged back under. After a few rounds, I was limp, unable to make a sound. Red threw me on the ground and ran to my sister, bowing repeatedly. “Boss, since he offended you, he’s useless. How should we dispose of him?” “Rip out his fingernails first. Then give him the ‘Bubble Tea’ treatment.” My blood ran cold. “Bubble Tea.” I had seen them use that torture on men before. It involved boiling water and a funnel. I never thought it would be my turn. Fine. Sister, you’ve committed so many sins. Retribution falling on me isn’t unjust. I calmed down. My sister wiped the blood from her face and glared at me. Then she froze. I closed my eyes, waiting for death. The thought of seeing Mom and Dad again made me smile. 4 “Is he… smiling?” My sister’s hesitant voice reached my ears. “What the hell? This little shit still has the nerve to smile!” Red couldn’t believe it. She grabbed my hair and yanked my head back. The dirty water had washed away the blood. My sister stared at my face, shocked. “Why does he have so many scars?” I saw my reflection in her eyes. A web of ugly, worm-like scars covered every inch of skin. It was horrifying. Disgusting. It was laughable that I thought she’d recognize me. I barely recognized myself. “We did it. To keep him from seducing the female staff and running away.” Red answered quickly. Sarah nodded in agreement. “Yeah, he’s a pretty boy. If we left his face alone, there’d be trouble eventually!” My sister nodded slowly. “Fair point. Pity, though. We could have sent him to the casino to entertain the rich ladies. Would’ve made more money that way.” A look of regret crossed Sarah’s face. “Ugh, my bad! Next time I’ll know better. I’ll find another handsome, innocent one!” Red sighed too. “Exactly. The ones you brought before were trash. Finally got a looker, and you ruined him…” “You said he looked like a pretty boy? Let me see a picture!” Red pestered Sarah for a photo. Sarah smiled wryly. “You confiscated my phone, remember?” Then her eyes lit up. She patted her pocket. “I have his ID and his diploma! You can check those!” Red got excited and told her to hand them over. Sarah pulled out my documents. Red leaned in eagerly. “Damn, nice! Look at that face. Like a puppy, but those pecs? Killer!” “You have good taste. If his face wasn’t ruined, he could have made a fortune as a gigolo!” My sister finished washing her face and walked over, drying herself with a towel. “Flying Fish? Weird name. Like me, belongs in the sky.” Red immediately started sucking up. “How can this brat compare to you, Boss!” “You’re a phoenix in the heavens. He’s just a dead fish that can’t fly. What’s the saying…” “A sparrow cannot understand the ambition of a swan!” My sister laughed and threw the towel at her. “Get out of here. A high school dropout reciting poetry?” Red peeled the towel off her face, grinning. “Just learning from the best! You’re the only college grad running a park like this!” “I remember what you told the Young Master. To succeed, you have to study hard…” Hearing my title, my sister’s face fell. She took my diploma from Sarah. Tracing the gold lettering, she sighed. “If Dragon were still alive, he’d be graduating college this year too…” She opened the diploma. Her eyes locked onto the photo. Her face went white. “Song Ningchen?” She said my full name with a trembling voice. She looked up at Red and Sarah. “Yeah. The kid told me he was an orphan when we met. Said he named himself.”

  • The Perfect Substitute

At our wedding, Damian’s “one that got away” crashed the ceremony in a bridal gown. “Damian, if you still love me, leave with me right now.” Damian didn’t hesitate. He took her hand. He left me standing there alone, facing a sea of pity and ridicule. Everyone thought I would be devastated, that my world would end. Little did they know… My “one that got away” had just come back, too. Damian was just a cheap knockoff. I didn’t need him anymore. 1 I was with Damian for seven years. But nobody thought we’d actually make it down the aisle. It was an open secret in our social circle: Damian was only with me because I was a dead ringer for his first love, Heather. When we first started dating, he would stare at me, lost in a trance. When he got drunk, he’d whisper while looking at my face, “Heather, I love you.” But Heather had gone to Europe and married someone else. I am Sierra. So, the person he loved wasn’t me. But I didn’t care. When he called out the wrong name, I corrected him, patiently, over and over again. He loved rare scotch, so I traveled the world to fill his cellar. He liked the look of black hair and white dresses, so I stopped dyeing my hair and filled my closet with pale silk and chiffon. Everyone said I was obsessed with Damian. My friends tried to warn me. “Don’t waste your youth on him, Sierra.” Heather had once saved his life. First love, married away, life-saver. She had the “tragic heroine” buff stacked to the max. “Back then, Damian loved her loud and proud. When Heather got married, Damian practically flatlined in the hospital from the stress.” “Sierra, to be blunt, he’s just using your face to mourn her.” “You guys have no future. Cut your losses.” I ignored them all. For seven years, I played the perfect partner. And eventually, Damian seemed moved by it. On my twenty-seventh birthday, he proposed. Under the soft glow of the chandelier, in a white tuxedo, he knelt on one knee. He looked devastatingly handsome. “Sierra, will you marry me?” His eyes were swimming with tenderness. It looked like love. My gaze lingered on the corner of his eye as I smiled gently. “Yes.” That night, he held me tight, whispering that he loved me. I thought it was real. But three days before the wedding, Heather got divorced. And Damian didn’t come home all night. 2 That night, I called Damian non-stop. Eventually, I got a text back. Not from him. “He’s asleep. What do you want?” Attached was a photo. Heather, with her dark hair splayed over her shoulders, her neck covered in hickeys, a post-coital flush on her cheeks. And Damian, sound asleep in her arms. It was obvious what they had been doing. My heart gave a little jump. I typed back: “Where is he?” A voice memo came back instantly: “Still haven’t given up? Come see for yourself then.” Then came the address. It was Heather’s penthouse. When I arrived, Heather opened the door. She was wearing flimsy lingerie. She looked me up and down and scoffed. “You really do look like me. No wonder Damian kept you around.” “But now that the real thing is back, it’s time for the cheap knockoff to exit the stage.” Her tone was pure arrogance. I frowned slightly. “Where is he…” Before I could finish, Damian walked out from behind her. He was holding his suit jacket, which he draped naturally and intimately over Heather’s shoulders. “Heather, you’re barely wearing anything. You’ll catch a cold…” When he saw me, he froze. “Sierra? What are you doing here?” Damian was fully dressed. He didn’t look like he’d just woken up at all. Whatever was in that photo was staged. It hit me instantly. This was a setup by Heather. She wanted to provoke me, make me lose my cool so she could play the victim and gain Damian’s sympathy. But she underestimated how calm I could be. I looked up and saw the flash of disappointment in Heather’s eyes. Damian noticed me staring at her and stepped in front of me, his voice hard. “Sierra, I’m taking you home.” I glanced at him and turned to leave. But Heather grabbed Damian’s hand, looking up at him with wide, teary eyes. “You aren’t staying? I’m scared to be alone.” I looked back. Damian looked at me, then at Heather. Finally, he peeled her hand off his arm. “I need to take Sierra home first.” In that moment, he chose me. It seemed that to him, I was more important than Heather. But on the drive back, he was distracted. The silence was heavy until a piercing ringtone shattered it. “Damian! Get to the hospital! Heather just tried to kill herself!” 3 That day, Damian kicked me out of the car on the side of the highway. It was pouring rain. When I finally got home, I was soaked to the bone, shivering uncontrollably. I wrapped myself in a duvet and stared at a photo on my phone. My finger traced the small beauty mark—a teardrop mole—under the man’s eye. I touched the screen gently, afraid I might startle him. I drifted into a feverish sleep and dreamt of my sophomore year of high school. The mid-term results were posted. I was Valedictorian again. Standard procedure. But then, a boy blocked my path and extended his hand. “Hi, Sierra. I’m Jax. I’m the guy who’s been stuck in second place behind you for eternity. Maybe you’ll remember me this time.” He was handsome, with eyes that crinkled into crescents when he smiled. The sunlight hit him from behind, giving him a golden halo. I couldn’t look away. Before graduation, we lay on the school rooftop, staring at the blue sky. He said, “Sierra, my dream is to be a cop. To serve the people… and to be on call for you, 24/7.” Later, I saw him in his uniform, standing tall as a pine tree, looking at me with that familiar gentleness. “Sierra, when I get back from this mission, let’s get married.” But he never came back. It has been ten years. I woke up crying. Outside, the sky was pitch black. The moonlight spilled through the window. I reached out to grab it, but my hand closed around empty air. I suddenly felt… That the thing I cared about most, I would never get back. I curled up on the bed, my heart aching physically. My hand gripped my phone tight. Like I was holding onto the last shred of light. “Jax…” 4 Damian came home the day before the wedding. I was at the bridal salon, trying on my dress. When the curtains pulled back, there he was. He looked at me with genuine awe. “Sierra, you look beautiful today.” I smiled politely, but my eyes were fixed on my reflection in the mirror. There was no joy in them. On the ride home, the car was silent. I watched Damian’s reflection in the window. My gaze settled on his sleek, sharp eyes. There was no mole under his eye. He wasn’t Jax. A wave of bitterness washed over me. I knew Jax could never be replaced, not really. But I had been clinging to Damian like a lifeline anyway. Even though his heart belonged to someone else. I suddenly spoke up. “Damian, since Heather is back, maybe we should cancel the wedding. You still love her…” He cut me off sharply. “I don’t love her.” I froze. I looked into his eyes. He seemed incredibly serious. “The one I love now is you, Sierra. I was only helping her because I owed her for saving my life.” My heart trembled. Shocked. “Really?” He nodded without hesitation. “Really.” He repeated it several times. I didn’t know if he was trying to convince me, or himself. I looked at his face for a long time. Finally, I sighed.

  • Melody of Marrow

1 I was born bad. A rot in the blood. Kidnapped as a toddler, I ended up slaughtering the entire backwoods cult that raised me. By the time my biological parents found me, I had reinvented myself as a quiet, nondescript lab technician at a chemical plant. After the reunion, my twin sister, Mia, would visit me often. She brought me homemade lunches and bought me soft, pastel dresses. Her eyes were always smiling. “Maya, you’re too thin. You need to eat.” “Maya, you suffered so much when you were taken. From now on, I’m going to spoil you.” Later, Mia fell in love. She blushed when she told me, “Maya, I’m getting married. It’s Julian Sterling. You know, the billionaire family? I know you hate crowds, so I’ll have Mom livestream the wedding for you.” “Maya, once I’m a trophy wife, I’ll have a huge allowance. I’ll send you money every month. You won’t have to work at that smelly plant anymore.” But I never got the livestream link. Instead, I got her body. Broken. Twisted. In that instant, the dormant gene—the urge to kill that I had suppressed for years—woke up. … I found Mia’s body in the woods outside “The Haven,” an exclusive reform school for the elite. Her limbs were shattered, her neck bruised, and she died pregnant. My blood boiled. I hugged her cold body tight. A phone slipped out of her dress pocket, lighting up with a text: 【Have you learned your lesson at The Haven yet? Behave, and stop bullying Lydia. I’ll give you the grandest wedding. I’ll make you the happiest bride on earth.】 Sender: 【Hubby Julian】 My eyes stung. My hands trembled as I replied: 【Hubby, I was wrong. I’m ready to come home.】 I had Mia cremated immediately. The funeral was small. Just our parents. Mom wept, kneeling before the casket, shaking. “Mia, I’m so sorry! I should have insisted you stay away from the Sterlings. They’re billionaires; why would they look at normal people like us… I didn’t protect you…” Dad stood in the corner, chain-smoking, face dark. Suddenly, he slapped himself hard. “I should have known! Why would he pay off our debts? He was buying my daughter’s life!” I watched this grieving middle-aged couple with a blank face. I had no feelings for them. My limited capacity for love had died with Mia. Suddenly, the door was kicked open. “Maya! Is this your idea of an apology?! I send you to learn manners, and you run back here to play dead?!” I quickly stepped into the shadows. Dad saw Julian Sterling and lunged. “You animal! Give me back my daughter!” Julian kicked him away, furious. “Don’t give me that drama. Do you think I’m an idiot?” Dad clutched his stomach, eyes murderous. “My daughter is dead! This is her funeral! You and that woman killed her!” “Wow. Maya is getting bold, hiring actors now? Look at this!” Julian held up his phone. On the screen was a photo of “Mia” (me, earlier), holding a cat, looking peaceful. Behind Julian, a girl peeked out. Lydia Sterling. She feigned innocence. “Mr. Lin, don’t blame Julian. He’s just stressed. Sister Mia has been bullying me since she moved in. Julian only sent her to The Haven to learn etiquette. The Sterling family requires a disciplined wife.” I hid in the corner, teeth grinding. So, these are the two who killed my sister. Neither of them is leaving this world in one piece. My mother, usually weak, rushed forward to slap Lydia but was caught by Julian. He threw her to the ground. Her head hit the wall with a sickening thud. “Tell Maya this is her last chance. Come back to the estate and apologize to Lydia. Otherwise, the wedding is off! If she loves me, she needs to learn to kneel.” 2 Julian and Lydia left, leaving my parents wailing in the funeral home. “Mia, it’s our fault… we were too poor to protect you.” “I’m calling the police!” Dad yelled. I pressed down on Dad’s hand. My expression was grave. “Dad, the police aren’t God. Let me handle this. I’m a professional.” I was kidnapped at one. I never knew family. I grew up in abuse. By five, the village men were touching me. My foster parents took money for it. My name back then was “Jane Doe”—unwanted. When I was eight, during a village festival, I drugged the water supply. While they slept, I burned the village to the ground. I walked out alone and into the foster system. For years, I was a freak. Bloodthirsty, cold, violent. I hid it well. Mia was the only light that ever touched my dark soul. And they tortured her to death. Two days later, wearing Mia’s dress, I knocked on the Sterling mansion’s door. “Hubby, I’m back. I’m here to apologize to Lydia.” Julian’s eyes flashed with surprise. He took my hand, looking at me with those lying,桃花 eyes. “Mia, I truly love you. But Lydia is my only sister. Even if she’s adopted, she’s the princess of this house.” I looked up, smiling. “Hubby, I was wrong. I’ll listen to you. I’ll take care of Lydia just like you do.” Mia and I shared a rare beauty. I hid in the dark; she bloomed in the sun. That’s why Julian chose her. That night, Julian knocked on my door. “Mia, since you’ve learned your lesson, let’s start over.” I stood in the doorway, eyes soft. “Okay.” “AHHH—” A scream from the stairs. Lydia tumbled down, landing in a heap. “Sister! Even if you hate me, you could just say so! Why did you pour oil on the stairs?!” “Lydia!” Julian rushed down, scooping her up. “We need to go to the hospital!” Lydia sobbed into his chest. “Julian, don’t blame her. She just loves you too much. She can’t stand you being nice to anyone else.” Julian turned to me, face grim. “Looks like you didn’t learn enough at The Haven. Pack your bags. You’re going back until you’re fixed!” I teared up. “Hubby, I didn’t do it! She fell!” “Enough! I’m taking you there myself!” Watching them leave, I smiled. Finally. I get to meet the people who broke my sister. Every cell in my body was vibrating. 3 The Maybach wound up the mountain road. Lydia sat shotgun, fake-crying. “Julian, maybe don’t send her back. What if they hurt her?” Julian patted her shoulder. “You’re too kind, Lydia. The Haven is a legitimate institution. Lots of elite families use it. Besides, it’s not her first time.” I sat in the back, watching Lydia’s reflection in the window. She was smirking. Two hours later, Julian dragged me out of the car. “Stay here. I’ll pick you up in a month. That vicious temper of yours needs grinding down.” Bang. The heavy iron gates slammed shut. I turned around. Three large men stood there, grinning. “I like this one. I’ll teach her the rules myself.” “She’s feisty. She needs all of us.” I smiled. “Good. I was hoping you’d say that.” They dragged me to a solitary confinement room. Inside was an electric chair and a stained mattress. The three men entered and locked the door. “Hey beautiful, time for your first lesson. We’ll teach you how to serve your man.” I cracked my neck. “Okay.” I’d been repressing this for years. They lunged. I pulled the heavy wrench strapped to my thigh. Clang. Clang. Clang. I smashed it into their skulls with lightning speed. It wasn’t enough. My hand trembled with excitement. The room filled with the music of their screams. They couldn’t handle me. I possess what doctors call “hysterical strength,” but I just call it being a born predator. Everything they did to Mia, I did to them. First, they wanted to assault her? Fine. I confiscated their tools. One swing of the wrench, and their lineage ended. I strapped one of them to the electric chair. “Who killed Mia? Speak, and I might make it quick.” I got my answers. I knocked them out and headed for Room 888. That was the VIP room where Mia died. I banged on the door. “Who is it?! You’re ruining the mood!” The door opened. Inside, a girl lay on the bed, eyes vacant, body covered in bruises. She was mumbling, “Hubby, I’m sorry, I’ll be good…” 4 “Mind if I join the party?” I smiled and locked the door behind me. The two men inside exchanged fearful looks. “Who are you? Mia is already…” “I am Mia. Come on, play with me! You guys look excited.” I raised the aluminum bat I’d found in the hall and swung for their necks. They fought back, but they were weak, spoiled sadists. I was a monster. Minutes later, they were on the floor, gasping. “Scream! I thought you liked it rough!” I laughed maniacally, shattering their kneecaps. The girl on the bed stirred. I threw her clothes at her. “Can you move? Get dressed. I have work to do.” Her eyes cleared slightly. She looked at me, realizing I wasn’t a victim. I went to the maintenance closet and found a chainsaw. I needed raw materials. The sound of the saw drowned out their pleading. The noise fully woke the girl. She dressed and looked at me with red eyes. “Sister… do you have a phone? My brother will come. He can… clean this up.” I lit a cigarette I stole from one of the men. We waited in the metallic scent of blood. She was a debutante who fell for a bad boy. Her family didn’t know she was here. Her brother arrived while I was finishing my “carving.” “Chloe! I’m sorry I’m late!” I looked up, face splattered with red, holding two perfectly severed femurs. “I avenged your sister too,” I said calmly. “Can you handle the cleanup? I have another stop to make.” The brother, Sebastian, looked at me—at the bones in my hand—with a complex expression. Shock, yes. But also respect. I borrowed his car and drove straight back to the Sterling estate. Mia’s face ID still worked on the gate. I walked into the living room. It sounded… active. “Julian… I’ve loved you for so long,” Lydia’s voice moaned. “I drugged the porridge. Just take me.” “Lydia… I can’t… you’re my sister…” Julian gasped, though his hands were already roaming her body. I cleared my throat. “Wow. Taboo. Spicy. Room for one more?” I gripped the wrench in my pocket.

  • The Eighth Try

After being killed by the psychopath male lead seven times, my mental state finally collapsed. On the eighth attempt, the male lead asked me to guess which straw he was holding. “Guess the shortest one, and I won’t kill you.” I kept a poker face and pointed to his crotch. 1. “Ha… I asked you to guess the straw!” Rain’s mouth twitched, annoyance overflowing from his narrowed eyes. I was numb from being killed, already in a state of living death. “Not the shortest?” Rain’s smile froze, murderous intent spreading and swelling in the silence. I closed my eyes, calmly accepting death. The previous seven times, I wracked my brains to please Rain, willingly becoming his lapdog. But every time, Rain killed me without mercy. I was tired. Really tired. When the system transported me back again, my brain didn’t want to work anymore. If I die, I die. It’s not like I haven’t died before. I really didn’t have the energy to play games with this psychopathic male lead anymore. I waited for a long time, but Rain didn’t act. I quietly opened one eye a slit, and Rain’s beautiful, bewitching face was magnified in front of me. I didn’t know when he had gotten so close, staring at me with eyes that wanted to devour me. “Very good.” Me: “What’s very good? The faint look of death on my face?” But Rain didn’t answer. He left me and left the great hall. Several maids came in and took me, tied up, to the bath. It wasn’t until they started stripping off my clothes that I realized Rain really wasn’t going to kill me this time. “This… what does giving me a bath mean?” The maids serving me didn’t speak, just lowered their heads and giggled. Just like that, I was washed clean and smooth, and delivered to Rain’s bed. Fuck… did the strategy work? 2. Short. It was really short. Of course, I’m not talking about anything else. I’m talking about the time. It was too short. I didn’t even have time to fight three hundred rounds with Rain before it was over. Rain and I lay naked on the bed like two dying fish, gasping for air. As for why I say dying fish, besides the heavy panting, we were both red all over as if we’d been cooked. I guess Rain was embarrassed. Regardless of whether it was because it was short or because it was his first time doing this, his good cool white skin instantly turned into hot pig skin. As for me, I just felt a hundred million points… embarrassed. I knew such a shocking secret about Rain. Would he get angry from embarrassment and kill me again? But before Rain could act, that damn system of mine came online unprecedentedly early. “Host, congratulations on completing the mission.” Surprise was followed by immense joy. So Rain was the heartless sword master who never got close to women. Once his heart was moved and the precept was broken, my conquest mission was complete. If I had known Rain liked the perverted type, I wouldn’t have pretended! Ah, no… I didn’t mean that I was perverted. I was transported back to the real world. Looking at the extra one million in my bank account, I smiled happily. I remitted money to my best friend’s bank account. Hearing that I had been killed seven times, my best friend felt very sorry for me. “Baby, it must have hurt a lot, right? This system is too stingy. You died so many times for only one million!” I sighed helplessly. “There’s no helping it. Now there are too many raiders, and it’s too competitive. The price of raid orders is falling. One million is already a sky-high price.” My best friend said indignantly, “For a raid mission of Rain’s level and difficulty, let alone one million, two more zeros are what you deserve!” That’s right! I started refreshing new raid missions, but because I hadn’t been able to grab a suitable mission order, the system couldn’t be summoned. Near midnight, I couldn’t stay up any longer. I set the alarm for the next morning and fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. I rarely dreamed. Perhaps it was because I had finally won this one-million raid mission, my brain was still in a very excited state. So, I dreamed of Rain. In the dream, Rain and I made love from moonset until dawn. When it was over, I leaned against the headboard and smoked a cigarette, not forgetting to pull Rain, who had shrunk under the covers, out and tease him. “Why wasn’t it short this time?” Rain’s face was cold, his lips trembled, and the tips of his ears were about to bleed. “Ring!” I suddenly opened my eyes and met Rain’s murderous black eyes. I was fucking shocked! I said how could this voice be so real? Did Rain hear me talking in my sleep?! Ah, no! Rain was fucking in front of me!! 3. I, Ring, have been in the raiding world for so many years, but this was the first time I had seen a target character run out of the novel world! It was really ridiculous. His mother opened the door for ridiculous, ridiculous home! Rain slowly straightened up, curled his lips slightly, and wrote the blackening on his face. “How have you been, Ring?” Done. I’m going to be avenged! I called the system to no avail, so I instinctively made a decision. I threw myself into Rain’s arms and coquettishly whispered in his ear. “Lord Sword Master, I missed you so much!” Didn’t everyone think I was going to continue to be Rain’s lapdog? I expressionlessly inserted the knife from Rain’s back straight to his heart. The transformation before and after was only an instant. Rain didn’t seem to expect me to kill him. The evil spirit around him suddenly collapsed, like a withered log. He fell straight onto my bed, unable to even say a word. “I meant I wanted you dead, Lord Sword Master.” I calmly pulled the knife out from Rain’s back and began to think about how to dispose of Rain’s body. Although he was a paper man, this was still a society governed by law. No one would believe I killed a paper man. I would only be arrested as a murderer and shot. Not worth it. Fortunately, Rain’s body slowly turned into bright powder and dissipated. Could it be because he was a paper man? I called the system again, wanting to ask clearly about this matter. But this dog thing, the system, not only pretended to be dead when doing tasks, but was even more thoroughly dead when not doing tasks. I gave up, intending to ask when I received the next mission. That night, I dreamed again. I still dreamed of Rain. He was dressed in loose clothes, his skin snow-white, lying lazily on the chaise longue, his posture seductive, but he looked at me with a pair of resentful eyes. “Ring, you ruthless woman…” I was subconsciously worried that he would appear in front of me again, and tried hard to break free from the dream. After waking up, I immediately inspected the whole house, and finally felt relieved. Fortunately, Rain didn’t appear again… Ding, morning news push. I habitually opened my phone and scanned the news while feeding toast into my mouth. Slap— The toast dropped onto the table without warning. I stared at the picture in the news with wide eyes. Morning News: This morning, a man in ancient costume and three drunken men had a conflict for unknown reasons. The man in ancient costume was stabbed seven times and died on the spot. The three drunken men have been arrested. The identity of the man is yet to be verified… That man in ancient costume who was hacked to death in the street… was fucking Rain?! 4. My best friend pointed at the news and let out a long “Ah,” extremely shocked. “You mean your one-million raid target ran to the real world, was killed by you yesterday, and was hacked seven times by someone and died again today?!” I rubbed my temples. “I don’t know what’s going on. Could it be that he also installed the system?” My best friend: “No way? He also became a raider? Who is he going to raid? It won’t be you, my treasure, will it?” My mouth twitched. “So crazy… It would be more like he came to kill me.” My best friend pondered. “Maybe, just maybe, he came to prove himself?” Me: “Prove what?” My best friend: “It’s not that short!” Me: “…” My best friend and I explored to no avail. All the reasons could only be known after the system came online.
