After a cold war with my husband, William Dawson, I was fatally stabbed three times during a robbery. My twin sister, Hannah Palmer, drowning in gambling debts, deliberately took my place after my death to get close to William. She acted like a complete doormat around William. Unlike me, she never got jealous of William’s first love. She’d even bring them condoms when they were fooling around in our marital bed. William finally cracked and asked Hannah what happened to his jealous wife, who used to fight for his attention. I had to laugh at that. I’d been dead all this time. How hadn’t he noticed? ***** The door opened, and my husband, William, walked in from outside. Behind him was Eleanor Bishop, his first love. His smile vanished when he glanced at the dining table, replaced by a stern expression. Instead of looking for me, he called my name commandingly. “Hazel Palmer, didn’t I tell you I was bringing Eleanor over for dinner? Where’s the food?” “I” quickly poked my head out of the kitchen. I had a placating smile on my face. “I’m sorry, Honey. Let me get you some fruit to snack on while I finish up. Dinner will be ready soon.” William frowned at my response, which was unusual for him. I knew precisely why he was frowning. I had changed from how I used to be. In the past, I couldn’t even stand hearing Eleanor’s name, let alone having William bring her home for dinner. But now I was, wearing an appeasing smile, not angry at all, even offering them fruit to tide them over. Eleanor was surprised by “my” behavior, but she quickly composed herself and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll help you.” With that, she walked into the kitchen. She picked up the pot of boiling water from the stove. But she was careless. Her hand slipped as soon as she lifted it, and the pot crashed to the floor, splashing scalding water all over me. “My” skin instantly turned an angry red. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to,” Eleanor apologized to me. William rushed into the kitchen immediately. Still, his first words were to Eleanor instead of checking my injury. “Are you okay?” His question seemed to snap Eleanor out of her daze. Her eyes turned red with tears. “William, I didn’t mean to. I was trying to help…” Probably afraid that “I” would blame Eleanor, William cut in before “I” could speak. “Hazel, Eleanor didn’t do it on purpose. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for being careless!” He then turned to Eleanor, his voice softening as he comforted her. “Don’t worry. She won’t be mad. I know you didn’t mean it. Just ignore her!” I found William’s words laughable. Of course I wouldn’t be mad. The reason “I” wouldn’t be mad was because the person standing in front of him wasn’t me. It was my sister Hannah. Hannah and I were twins. But we had different personalities. I was warm and obedient since childhood. At the same time, Hannah had always been rebellious and cold. Hannah and I were like two parallel lines heading in entirely different directions. While I followed our parents’ wishes, studying and growing up according to plan, Hannah dropped out of high school and even landed in jail for fighting, making our parents so angry they practically disowned her. After Hannah got out of jail, our parents gave her ten thousand dollars and cut ties with her, declaring she was on her own. I hadn’t seen Hannah since then. A few years after I graduated from college and started working, I married William. Hannah wasn’t at my wedding. I had never told William about having a twin sister named Hannah, so he had no idea that the person standing before him now, pretending to be me, was my sister. The next time I saw Hannah was the day I was stabbed to death by a criminal. I was lying there covered in blood, and the attacker had already disappeared. I was at the entrance of an alley, and my phone was dead, so I was about to call passersby for help. At that moment, someone happened to walk by.
I screamed for help at the top of my lungs. She walked toward me, and only when she stood right before me did I recognize her as my sister Hannah, whom I hadn’t seen in years. She clicked her tongue at the sight of my blood-covered body and said, “Well, well, Hazel. Never thought I’d find you in a worse state than me after all these years.” Hannah called for an ambulance, but it was too late. By the time I reached the hospital, I had already lost too much blood. The doctor pronounced me dead. After learning that Hannah was my next of kin, the doctors released my body to her care. Hannah couldn’t care less about my body. She went through my belongings, taking everything valuable, like my phone, wallet, and bank cards. She used facial recognition to unlock my phone easily and transferred money from my bank account. After emptying my accounts, she must have gotten bored because she started scrolling through my chat history. That was when she discovered I had gotten married to a wealthy husband. Hannah touched her face, identical to mine, as a devious plan began to form in her mind. Facing a massive debt of several hundred thousand dollars, she saw an opportunity to solve her problems by extracting money from my husband in my place. So she hastily disposed of my body, kept my death a secret from everyone, and stepped into my life. As for me? After death, I became a wandering spirit, following Hannah and watching everything unfold. ***** Returning to the present, I watched Hannah examine her scalded leg, raising an eyebrow. She played with William’s concern, telling Eleanor, “It’s fine, just a burn. I know you didn’t mean it, but even minor burns need proper medical attention…” William caught Hannah’s drift and pulled out his phone, transferring some money to her. “I’ve sent you ten thousand dollars. Go get that treated at the hospital!” When the bank notification pinged, Hannah smiled. “Sure thing, Honey. I’ll head to the hospital and get it taken care of,” she replied smoothly. William frowned slightly at how quickly she agreed. Hannah turned and walked out of the apartment. Instead of going to the hospital, she went straight to pay off her debts with the ten thousand dollars William had transferred. I had no idea how much money Hannah had borrowed over all these years. But one thing was clear. If this continued, William would end up completely broke. I wasn’t worried about William at all. I looked forward to the day when Hannah would drain him dry. The thought made me laugh at the irony of it all. The old me would have hated to see Hannah drag William down into her mess. But now, I felt nothing but peace about it. ***** When Hannah came to her senses, it was already evening when she finished paying off the debt. She wandered outside longer, not heading home until eight o’clock. But Hannah couldn’t have picked a worse time to return. When she opened the door, she caught Eleanor snuggling up against William, the two looking cozy. William and Eleanor jumped apart the moment they saw Hannah. I let out a bitter laugh. I’d lost count of how often I’d seen William and Eleanor getting intimate. William used to be discreet about it, but now he didn’t even try hiding it anymore. “Oh, sorry, sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt you two. Please, carry on! I’ll get out of your way…” Hannah started to close the door after witnessing the scene. She still needed William’s help with the debt, so she knew better than to make him unhappy. But William moved faster than Hannah could close the door. He grabbed her arm. “Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not what you think with Eleanor and me. She was dizzy, so I steadied her in case she fell…” I could hardly believe my ears. William, who always called me unreasonable and a shrew, was trying to explain his behavior to Eleanor. Hannah maintained her smile, completely unfazed. “It’s totally fine. I understand. I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.” She started to turn around and close the door to leave. William grabbed Hannah’s arm with a sudden burst of unexplained anger. “Hazel, aren’t you jealous at all?” “Why should I be jealous?” Hannah replied with genuine confusion. “If you like Eleanor, I’d be happy for you…” She continued speaking, completely missing William’s darkening expression. Before she could finish, he roughly grabbed her wrist and demanded, “Hazel, shouldn’t you be throwing a fit right now? Or are you playing hard to get with me?!” William’s words hung in the air. Hannah found his reaction completely absurd. I found it just as absurd as she did. He used to hate it when I would make scenes and act like a jealous shrew. Now that Hannah had become his idea of a perfect, understanding wife, he was utterly lost.
“I’m not upset, William. I truly am happy for you,” Hannah spoke calmly. “Whether you like Eleanor or someone else, you can bring either home. I don’t mind.” “Are you being honest with me?” William stared intently at her, his brows furrowed as he searched her face for hidden feelings. “Yes, completely honest.” I’d expected William to be thrilled when Hannah said those words. Instead, his face darkened with an icy, unhappy expression. “I’ll get out of your way then,” Hannah continued, ignoring his cold demeanor. “But William, I’ll need some money for a hotel. Could you transfer some to me?” William’s expression grew even darker. “Money, money, money! That’s all you ask for lately. Do you want money? Fine, here! Take it and get out!” He pulled a credit card from his pocket and threw it at Hannah’s face. Hannah didn’t get angry. She picked up the card and walked away. I couldn’t help but find William’s expression somewhat amusing. Ever since Eleanor had returned from abroad, William had been wholly devoted to her. He had neglected me, his wife of seven years. Whenever I questioned him about his relationship with Eleanor, he accused me of making a fuss over nothing. Now that Hannah was a compliant wife instead of a questioning one, he wasn’t happy either. ***** Hannah lay in her hotel bed that night. She kept staring at the credit card William had given her, turning it repeatedly in her hands. “William’s loaded… I wonder how much I could get in a divorce settlement,” Hannah muttered. The next day, Hannah called lawyers to discuss divorce proceedings. She stayed away from home for several days, busy with preparations. On the seventh day, Hannah received a text message from William. William: [I’m out of condoms. Bring some over.] Not only was William sleeping with her first love, but he was deliberately rubbing it in “my” face. I would have cursed him out if I had been on the other end of that phone before. I would have hung up on him hard. If that weren’t enough to cool my anger, I would have tracked him down for a screaming match and a physical fight. But now, I feel nothing for him. I just had a calm urge to laugh. But Hannah was different from me. In her world, she only knew how to obey to get more money from William. As expected, she agreed to his request. Hannah bought a box of condoms and delivered them to William’s hotel room. She knocked on the door. The door quickly opened, and William froze momentarily when he saw Hannah. “I can’t believe you actually came,” he said in a dull voice, somewhere between addressing her and talking to himself. William stood there, clearly surprised by her presence. “Do you need anything else? If not, I’m leaving,” Hannah said flatly, ignoring his comment. Her words snapped William back to reality. Seeing she was about to leave, he grabbed her arm roughly. “Hazel, what happened to you? Why have you changed so much?” Instead of answering, Hannah asked, “About the money for the condoms…” William frowned deeply. “Money again! Is that all you care about?” “Yeah, that’s right. Don’t worry. As long as you pay me, I won’t get in the way of you and Eleanor. You two can be together without any concerns. “I’ll even divorce you if the price is right.” William finally realized something was seriously wrong with “me” at that moment. His voice was confused as his eyes scanned me up and down. “You were never like this before, Hazel. “Where did the old you go?” I floated in the air as I let out a sneer. Didn’t he know I was already dead? Hannah wanted to leave, probably afraid of exposing her identity. “If nothing else, I’ll be going now.” William tried to grab Hannah but only caught her clothes. Her collar tore at the shoulder, revealing the spot where my birthmark should have been now wholly bare. William noticed this immediately. He stood there speechless, his jaw dropped. “You’re…”
