I’ve been married to Alister Russell for three years now. When we divorced, everyone in New York figured no man would ever dare take me on again. Back then, I’d used every trick in the book to marry him. I drugged him, framed him for sleeping with me, then had my grandfather storm over to his family to force the marriage. I finally got what I wanted. These past years, trying to make him love me, I threw away every shred of dignity I had, bending over backward to please him. When his beloved Carola Morgan woke up from her coma, I threw tantrums and threatened suicide while everyone in our circle waited to watch me make a fool of myself. But after I woke up in the hospital, I went straight for all of Alister’s assets. I destroyed every gift I’d bought him over the years and sold off his patents too. In the end, I forced him to sign the divorce papers and walked away from him for good. When Alister realized he’d actually signed divorce papers instead of some business contract, he lost it completely, screaming at me: “What game are you playing now? How long is this little act going to last?” But I was already done with him. At that moment, I was busy flirting with Alister’s incredibly powerful uncle, batting my eyelashes as I purred: “Mr. Hoffman, this is the fifth time already. Could you maybe give me a break tonight?” Later I heard that when Alister discovered the girl who’d actually saved his life wasn’t Carola but me, he completely lost his mind. ***** “Mr. Russell, Mrs. Russell attempted suicide.” When I came to, I heard our butler Fraser Chavez reporting to Alister over the phone. Alister’s ice-cold voice came through the speaker: “Is she dead?” Fraser seemed taken aback by the question: “Not yet, she didn’t hit any major arteries.” “If she’s not dead, don’t bother me with it.” Alister’s voice was both impatient and frigid: “Caro’s awake. I need to be with her.” With that, he hung up without mercy. My head was still spinning, and my wrists were wrapped in gauze. Fraser turned around to see I was awake, looking somewhat embarrassed as he said: “Mrs. Russell, Mr. Russell, he…” I cut straight to the point: “Carola’s awake?” Fraser seemed startled, as if he hadn’t expected me to overhear. But he quickly recovered, his tone dripping with mockery: “Mrs. Russell, since you heard, there’s nothing left to say. Ms. Carola Morgan’s condition is unstable, and Mr. Russell needs to stay by her side. Your suicide stunts are pointless—stop humiliating yourself. You’re just making more work for us staff.” My heart felt like it had been brutally crushed, followed by endless despair. I’d chased Alister for three years, been married to him for three years, and he’d never once cared about me—only felt disgust. Still clinging to a thread of hope, I asked: “Is he in Carola’s room?” I knew Carola was staying in this same hospital. Ignoring Fraser’s attempts to stop me, I got up to find Alister. Fraser followed behind, impatiently trying to dissuade me: “Mrs. Russell, why put yourself through this? Mr. Russell already said he’d let you keep the title of his wife, but he could never love you. The more you act like this, the more Mr. Russell will despise you. Please don’t go looking for trouble with Ms. Carola Morgan…” I ignored Fraser and pushed open Carola’s hospital room door. The scene inside stopped me cold.
Alister was crouched beside Carola’s bed, gently massaging her legs with the most tender expression. His movements were soft and patient. On Carola’s nightstand sat a bouquet of pink tulips. The man who’d always been so proud and cold toward me was now incredibly gentle. Just then, Carola looked up and spotted me standing in the doorway. “Alister, maybe you should go check on Daphne? After all, she is your wife.” Carola deliberately said this while looking at Alister, putting on an act of looking troubled. Alister had his back to the door and didn’t know I was standing there. His tone suddenly turned cold. “If she wants to make a scene, let her. She always does this on purpose to scare people, trying to get me to come back and keep her company.” Carola covered her mouth and giggled, deliberately glancing in my direction with a provocative look in her eyes. “Alister, aren’t you afraid something might actually happen to her? She always acts up like this—what if something really goes wrong?” Alister paused for a moment, his brow furrowing. Then he said impatiently, “If something happens, so be it. The Morgan family business is all in my hands now. I can get justice for you and your mother for all the grievances you suffered back then, anytime I want.” Hearing Alister’s cold, heartless words, I could hardly believe it. Tears instantly rolled down my cheeks. Only then did I understand—he didn’t just marry me because of Grandpa’s pressure, but also because of the Morgan family business. He married me to get justice for Carola and her mother for their so-called grievances. My heart felt like someone had stabbed it with a knife! Carola’s mother was a mistress. Years ago, to seduce my father, she deliberately got close to my mother and even became my mom’s best friend. Then she drugged my dad and slept with him, which is how Carola came to be. My parents had always been deeply in love, but because of this incident, they had a cold war for years. The Morgan family never accepted the mother and daughter—aside from providing basic living expenses, they were never allowed through the Morgan family’s doors. Yet the mother and daughter went around flaunting their connection to the Morgan family. Carola’s mother claimed to be my father’s wife, and Carola called herself the second young lady of the Morgan family. Because of them, my parents’ relationship grew worse and worse, and I was often mocked by classmates. I certainly didn’t think she had suffered any grievances. Carola looked at Alister with a touched expression. “I knew you cared about me the most.” Alister patiently massaged her legs, his voice gentle. “Of course I should care about you. You got sick trying to save me back then—if it weren’t for that, your health wouldn’t be so fragile.” Hearing this, I was instantly stunned. I thought to myself, “He’s saying Carola saved him? But the person who saved him back then was…” “Alister, I’ve liked you since we were kids. For you, I’d risk my life,” Carola said to Alister. “I’m just afraid of hurting Daphne’s feelings. Even if she won’t acknowledge me, I still consider her my sister! It’s just… I really envy Daphne. She’s had Grandpa’s and Dad’s love since childhood, plus a complete family. Now she has your love and the status of being your wife.” Alister said, “Caro, just wait a little longer. Once my patent application goes through, I’ll divorce her.”
Carola looked at him, her eyes full of anticipation. “Alister, you have to remember what you promised me.” I frowned, thinking, “What exactly did Alister promise Carola?” Alister looked at her dotingly. “Yes, I remember. The day my patent comes through, I’ll take you to the Morgan family, ask her for a divorce, and then marry you. Once I get the patent, no one in the Morgan family will be able to control me anymore. I’ll give you and your mother a proper explanation in front of everyone in the Morgan family.” Alister reached out and stroked Carola’s hair. “I promised you I wouldn’t let you and your mother live without status like before, suffering grievances for a lifetime.” Carola was deeply moved and hugged Alister. “Alister, you’re so good to me…” ***** I quickly completed the discharge procedures. After leaving the hospital, I first went to a law firm and printed out a divorce agreement. Then I returned to the villa where Alister and I lived after our marriage. This was our shared home after we got married.
