If You Don’t Love, I Won’t Stay

In order to send chocolate cake to my wife’s old classmate who was suffering from depression, her cousin, Lucas Perry, and his family had a car accident on the highway and needed urgent surgery. My wife, Emily Perry, the attending physician, posted photos of her and her old classmate, Riley Lewis, traveling around on Instagram. When I called her that her own younger brother was still waiting for her help, she said, “Riley is dying of depression. Can’t I be with him to realize his last wish? Don’t always lie to me with such a lame excuse!” After she hung up the phone, I completely lost contact with her. Finally, Lucas and his family eventually died due to delayed rescue. I packed up all my things and left home, determined to end all ties with this cold-blooded woman. ***** I waited outside the emergency room for three hours. When the lights finally went out, the doctor came out and said in a heavy tone, “We have tried our best, but all three patients have rare diseases, and their conditions are very complicated. You have to find a doctor to perform surgery on them as soon as possible; otherwise, they will not make it tonight.” The anxiety almost made me fall to the ground. “My wife Emily Perry is their attending physician. Isn’t she here?” I asked. “We can’t contact Dr. Perry right now. She was supposed to be on duty tonight, but we can’t find her.” After hearing this, I quickly took out my cell phone and called her. Because my fingers were trembling so hard, I almost entered the wrong number. But after calling more than a dozen times, the only answer I got was a cold mechanical sound. I opened WhatsApp and sent a message to her but found she posted some pictures on Instagram ten minutes ago by chance. In that photo, she looked radiant with a bright smile and hugged the depressed Riley. They seemed to be a perfect match. She posted the photos with a sentence: [I really wanted you to know the precious life and beautiful world.] Riley liked the post on her Instagram and commented with hug and heart emojis. I held the phone until my fingers turned pale and punched the wall angrily. At such a critical moment, the reason I lost touch with her was because she was having a good time with Riley. Then, I found Riley’s number from the address book and called him directly. This time, the call quickly got through, and Riley said, “Hello, who’s speaking?” I said bluntly, “Who else could I be? I’m Emily’s husband. My wife is with you, right? Give her the phone now.” Riley paused for a second and said, “She is taking a shower now. If you have anything to say, I’ll tell her.” An unknown anger surged in my heart. Just as I was about to say something, I suddenly heard someone approaching the caller with the sound of water. I heard Emily softly asking, “Who’s calling so late at night?” I took the chance to shout to her over the phone, “Emily, Lucas was in a car accident! The three of his family are all in the hospital. You’re the one who knows their conditions the best, so go back to the hospital instead of staying with that man!” She immediately took Riley’s phone and questioned me with a cold tone when my teeth were chattering because of rage, “How did you get his phone number? What do you want to do? I’m warning you, Riley’s depression is already very serious. If you make his condition worse, I will never forgive you!” “Did you hear me? Lucas is dying. Are you going to come back to save him or not?” I said. Roy sneered disapprovingly, not taking my words seriously at all. She said, “Victor Moore, that’s enough! I know you have a problem with my relationship with Riley, but you don’t have to use such a bad excuse to force me to go back. You know I hate liars.” “Riley may die because of depression. I want to be with him to realize his last wish. I don’t have time to waste time with you here! Don’t call me again!” she added. After Emily finished shouting, she hung up the phone and blacklisted me, and I could no longer get through her number.

Suddenly, the ECG monitor in the emergency room began beeping. The doctor ran over and checked their conditions. Then, he turned to me with a serious face and the diagnosis that they wouldn’t very likely make it tonight. Meanwhile, Lucas suddenly became momentarily conscious and desperately asked for my help, holding my hand. “Victor, find Emily. She can save all of us.” Suppressing my tears, I nodded. “Okay, I’ll go right now. Just hang in there, okay?” Emily and I grew up together, and Lucas was almost my own brother. I couldn’t watch him die. Recalling the two plane tickets Emily posted on Instagram, I immediately drove to the airport after realizing they were about to leave the city an hour later. When I managed to arrive at the airport lobby, I anxiously looked for my wife among the crowd. Suddenly, I turned around and saw Riley and Emily waiting in line for their tickets. I ran to them, only to find Emily bought an orange for Riley and said softly, “Here. Eat something to fill your stomach.” As Riley shook his head, she peeled it for him and handed it to Riley patiently. “Can you eat it now?” Clenching my hands, I felt the inexplicable sadness surge in my heart. In the past, I took great care of Emily. Considering that she was a doctor who needed to perform delicate surgeries on patients, I always peeled the hard-to-peel food in order to give the best care of her hands. But when I accidentally asked her to take out the trash, she refuted me impatiently, “I can’t touch those dirty things with my hands.” I originally thought that she was just a lukewarm person. It turned out she just showed all her tenderness and patience to someone else. Thinking of Lucas, who was still in the hospital waiting for my sister to save him, I temporarily suppressed the complex emotions in my heart. Walking straight to my wife, I pulled her arm. “Emily, come back to the hospital with me immediately to perform surgery on your brother!” After seeing it was me, she shook her hand off with disgust. “That’s enough! I’m just traveling with Riley. Do you have to stalk us? Riley and I are clean!” The people around us were attracted by her voice and looked over. Although I was angry at her misunderstanding of my intentions, I had to explain everything to her. I said, “Lucas really got into an accident. His organs were ruptured, and he is still losing blood because of the crush. He is dying.” “The doctors in the hospital don’t dare to perform surgery on him. You are the only one who understands his conditions. Do you want to watch your brother die? If you don’t believe me, call the hospital, and you’ll know I am not lying,” I added. However, Emily still didn’t believe what I said and took their ticket like I didn’t exist. “You’re such a terrible liar. I know you will get along with my colleagues. You must have conspired to lie to me,” she said. “Do you think I will joke about something like this? He’s your brother, and also my brother. We grew up together with him. And now you’ve left him in the hospital because of an old classmate. You’ll regret your current choice!” After hearing what I said, Emily seemed to waver but still didn’t trust me. “Don’t be ridiculous. How could Lucas get into a car accident in the middle of the night? They know they have some disease that will prevent them from going outdoors, especially at midnight.” I said, “It’s because you asked him to buy that goddamn chocolate cake! You said you wanted a freshly made one; that was why he rushed on the road.” Hearing this, Emily sneered. “What are you talking about? I didn’t ask him to buy that kind of stuff. You’re definitely lying. Are you kidding me?” I looked at her in confusion. “What? Lucas sent me a message before, saying he would send you a chocolate cake. Half an hour later, he had a car accident!” Just then, Riley interrupted our argument. He said, “I sent him that message to buy the chocolate cake with your phone, Emily. I really miss that taste. “But I didn’t receive Lucas’ reply. It was in the middle of the night at that time; he would probably send it to us this morning. “Emily, if you’re worried, just go back with Victor. I can go there alone. I will find the most beautiful place and stay there forever.” The gate issued a reminder to board, and Riley walked away with his luggage without even looking at Emily again. But she was frightened by his last words. Fearing that he would commit suicide once he landed, she quickly ran over and hugged him. “How can you leave me alone? I’ll go with you!” She wiped her tears and said, “I don’t care about anyone else but you. Let’s get out of here!” Before leaving, she glared at me fiercely, as if blaming me for still lying to her at this time. They held hands and flew away together without even giving me the last glance. I tried desperately to call Emily back, but the security guard stopped me at the boarding gate since I didn’t have a ticket. Just then, the bad news came along with my phone ringtone. “I’m sorry, Mr. Moore, but Lucas and his parents just passed away…”

I held a funeral for Lucas and his parents. Emily’s parents also attended it and cried so hard that they almost fainted. They tried to contact Emily by calling him countless times with tears. But Emily was completely out of touch and ignored everyone’s attempts to contact her. Her inappropriate behavior almost made her parents have a heart attack. Meanwhile, Emily’s Instagram was still updated. Every day, she posted photos of her and Riley traveling around with sensational words. I felt like throwing up when I saw it and quietly turned off my phone. I thought three years of marriage would be enough to make her less heartless, only to see through her selfish nature. Although she once fell in love with Riley, I assumed our marriage meant the end of their relationship. But their love seemed to have rekindled at an inopportune time. In this case, it seemed I should help the lovebirds. I rented a house outside and planned to move out of home. I would file for divorce with Emily when she came back. On the day I was about to pack some small things, Emily and Riley came back. Their harmonious chat stopped tacitly at the sight of me. They stood so close to each other and looked so natural that they were the owners of this property. Riley wanted to explain, “Victor, I may have to stay at your house for a few days. Sorry about that. I didn’t mean to bother you, but Emily just couldn’t help worrying about me. She insisted on taking care of me until I got better.” I didn’t say anything and walked straight inside. Riley stood there, feeling a little awkward. My reaction irritated Emily, and she slammed the table with a sullen face. “Victor, what do you mean? Is this how you treat Riley’s patient explanation? I’m warning you. You are not allowed to embarrass him while he’s here. Behave yourself, and I won’t mind you lying to me last time.” “By the way, where’s Lucas? Why can’t I contact him?” she asked. I gave her a sarcastic smile. “How dare you ask where he is? You are not qualified to do that. His whole family died because of you.” Emily was stunned, and her face distorted when she pointed at me. “What the hell did you say, Victor? Are you cursing them? You know he and his parents’ disease are already making me so sad. Why did you say something like that?” She was shivering with anger and tears, as if she was really worried about Lucas. I wanted to laugh and took out my phone to show her a picture. “I still have their portrait. Do you want to take a look?” I said. On the phone was a black-and-white family photo, which was taken of Lucas and his family before they came to visit Emily. However, I could only use this lovely family photo as their portrait. Emily snatched the phone and crushed it on the ground. “Victor, you’re such a bastard. You want to divorce?” “You’re just jealous of seeing me and Riley together. That’s why you always try to attract my attention with some tricks. But you know what? It has gone too far this time,” she added. I picked up my phone and said, “I’m not jealous. I’m happy to divorce you. Wish you and Riley happy forever.” Instead of wasting my time with her, I went to my room to quietly pack my luggage. Emily stared at me in disbelief and yelled at me, “Victor Moore! If you dare to go out today, never come back again!” I just smiled and said, “I’ll draft the divorce agreement and send it to you. Remember to sign it.” Just when she rushed to stop me from leaving, Riley began to sob. “I’m sorry, Emily, this is all my fault. I ruined your marriage. I’m leaving now! It’s better for me to go back to my own home!” Hearing this, she retreated to comfort Riley and hugged him in her arms sorrowfully. “Don’t go back. I won’t abandon you no matter what happens!”

Before leaving, I told Emily that Lucas and his family were buried on a mountain, and she could go there and at least visit them when she had time. But neither did she go there nor believe me. Emily was busy looking after Riley in the hospital. The last time he cried and apologized, his mental illness relapsed, making him attempt suicide and live in the hospital. Emily stayed by his bedside for three days without sparing time to have meals and ignored everything else. After learning Lucas and his family’s death, Emily’s parents’ health went downhill. When I took them to the hospital for a body check, we ran into Emily. I saw her holding Riley’s arm. As they walked, Emily looked worried. “I haven’t heard from Lucas for a couple of days. Did he really have some kind of trouble? Even my parents started to ignore my call,” she said. Riley held her hand and said, “If something really happened to him, you’ll know. You care about him most. I have seen all your efforts for him and his family over the years.” “Maybe Victor was mad at me and said something to make them misunderstand you,” he added. Hearing this, Emily said coldly with a sullen face, “That’s right. I’ve known him for too long. My parents even treat him as their son. They believe whatever Victor says.” When they were about to return to Riley’s ward, Emily saw me and felt disgusted after a momentary shock. “What are you doing here? Why do I see you everywhere? Are you not satisfied about making Riley almost kill himself?” she shouted. Instead of arguing back at her, I just handed her a divorce agreement. “I heard that you didn’t sign for the one I mailed to your house. Luckily, I printed two copies. Sign it now,” I said. Emily looked at me with suspicion, and when she found the thing inside the file bag was really the divorce agreement, she almost tore it apart. Slapping the file bag back at me, she said angrily as the papers fell to the ground, “I’ve been so busy taking care of Riley that I can’t even have time to eat. Why do you have to trouble me at this time? I will get a divorce when I have time. You don’t need to rush me!” Emily looked very angry with her chest heaving violently as if I should be blamed for the failure of our marriage. I found it hilarious that she actually thought I failed her. Why didn’t I realize before that she had poor self-awareness? I picked up the divorce agreement, put the papers back into her hands, and insisted. “It’s just a matter of moving your fingers. How much effort does it take? Why not do it today? You don’t have to worry about me bothering you anymore after signing it.” Then, Emily really tore the agreement into pieces. She gritted his teeth and said, “You are so anxious about divorce right now because you cheated on me? Who are you here with today?” I wanted to tell her the truth that her parents didn’t feel well, but finally, I said nothing in case they would have a heart attack after knowing what this jerk had done. But Emily discovered them behind me quickly ran over there surprisingly and happily. She acted like a little girl and said to them, “Dad, Mom, why are you here? I miss you so much.” However, her mother, Olivia Jones, pushed her away directly, and her father, Josh Perry, who had always doted on her, did not even look at Emily. She hugged them again and asked, “Are you mad at me? I didn’t mean to not contact you. I just had something important to do.” “Did Victor say anything about me to you? You have no idea how terrible he was. He actually lied to me that Lucas was dead and even asked me to go back to the hospital to save him. He must have been kidding me. He’s so terrible at lying,” she said. Reminding what Lucas went through, Olivia finally lost her temper and slapped Emily in the face. She said, “How dare you say something like that to Lucas?! Your cousin’s whole family is dead! They died on the night you asked them to bring the chocolate cake in the middle of the night! You were the one who refused to save them!”
