A Medical Examiner’s Revenge

I had just received the “Outstanding Intern of the Year” award at City General Hospital when a former classmate of mine, Chloe, burst into the room accompanied by a swarm of police officers. They surrounded me instantly. Tears streamed down her face as she pointed a trembling finger at me: “When I was in the OR last week, he took naked photos of me while I was unconscious under anesthesia, and he leaked them online!” The room fell dead silent. Everyone stared at me with pure, unadulterated disgust. I tried to open my mouth to explain that I was a forensic pathology intern, working down in the morgue—I didn’t even operate on living patients. But the lead officer held up a stack of printed, highly explicit photographs. “We’ve run the facial recognition. These photos are undeniably of Chloe.” The moment I saw the photos, everything clicked into place. … 1 Inside the interrogation room at the precinct. I sat across the metal table, watching Chloe sob hysterically. I kept my voice perfectly calm. “Since you’re so absolutely certain it was me, do you mind pulling up your surgical records from that day?” Chloe’s dramatic sobbing hitched for a second. Then, she shrieked: “Are you insane?! That is my private medical history!” “Officer, don’t listen to him! He’s a sick pervert! He posted my nudes because he thought it was a thrill, and now he’s trying to dox my medical history!” I stared at her face, twisted in a mask of aggressive, manufactured panic. “You’re the one who filed the police report. If you don’t provide your surgical records to prove you were actually in an OR, how do we have ‘undeniable evidence’?” Detective Miller, the lead investigator, frowned deeply at my relaxed, composed demeanor. But he nodded to a younger officer to pull up the hospital’s database anyway. A few minutes later, the records pinged on the officer’s tablet. Detective Miller narrowed his eyes, reading the screen, before looking up in sheer disbelief. “The hospital logs show that last Wednesday, Chloe underwent a D&C procedure for a terminated pregnancy…” “The logs do show that an intern was present for the entire procedure, but… the name isn’t Ryan Miller.” Hearing that, the color drained from Chloe’s face. She stared at the tablet, violently shaking her head. Then, as if struck by a sudden realization, she grabbed the detective’s arm desperately. “His family practically owns that hospital! His dad is a major shareholder! He definitely hacked the system and deleted his name from the logs!” “If you don’t believe me, check his timecards! I swear to God, he was working at the hospital last Wednesday!” Before I could even respond, the younger officer spun the tablet around. “Detective, Ryan Miller was clocked in at the hospital last Wednesday. His timecard shows he was scheduled for a surgical procedure at the exact same time.” Detective Miller’s face hardened as he glared at me. “Who else was in the operating room with you that day?” I shook my head. “Just me.” I wasn’t lying. The pathology department was severely understaffed. It was completely normal for an intern to handle a case solo. Chloe jumped out of her chair, pointing accusingly. “What kind of hospital lets an intern perform a surgery completely alone?! He’s lying through his teeth! He’s just making up excuses for sneaking into my OR!” “There are only six operating rooms on the third floor! If you check them one by one, you’ll prove he was there!” Detective Miller leaned across the table, his eyes locked onto mine. “Ryan, you do realize that giving false statements to the police and tampering with medical records are felonies, right?” I let out a heavy sigh and told them to pull the security footage from the third-floor surgical hallway for that entire day. When the footage played on the monitor, the entire room held its breath. From 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, the cameras captured every single doctor, nurse, and orderly moving in and out of the surgical suites in crystal-clear HD. I was nowhere on the tape. Before Detective Miller could even speak, Chloe was already screaming, her eyes burning with vicious malice: “What about camera blind spots?! What about the stairwells?! He probably snuck into my OR through a side door!” “If he didn’t do it, then explain where these photos came from!” With that, she violently slapped the stack of printed, explicit photos onto the metal table. When everyone in the room finally got a clear look at the images, a collective, horrifying gasp echoed through the room. Because the photos weren’t just nudes. They were incredibly graphic, clinical, close-up shots of naked human body parts. “Ryan, you sick freak! You didn’t just take these, you saved them to a hidden album on your phone! Are you absolutely disgusting?!” “Every single one of these photos can be traced back to your device! Are you really going to sit there and deny it?!” My breath hitched in my throat. Because those photos… I had personally taken every single one of them. 2 Just then, a cybercrimes officer practically kicked the interrogation room door open. “Detective! The data extraction report is back. The photos were absolutely downloaded from Ryan’s phone!” “And… we managed to recover a deleted social media post using forensic software.” He tossed a few printouts onto the table. It was a photo of me standing next to an operating table. The table was draped in a stark white sheet, and you could clearly see a pair of bare legs protruding from beneath it. The caption read: “Observing and learning. Unlocking new experiences!” Detective Miller’s face turned lethal. He glared at me with absolute, murderous disgust. “Look at this. You took this, didn’t you?” “Do you have any concept of patient privacy?! Are you even fit to wear a doctor’s coat?!” I stayed silent for a few agonizing seconds, then nodded slowly. “I took it.” Detective Miller ground his teeth together, practically spitting his next question: “Who is the person in this photo?” “I don’t know.” I wasn’t lying. By the time they arrived at my department, most of them were John or Jane Does. “Are Chloe’s photos on your phone?” I shook my head firmly. “I never took a single photo of her!” “Then why the hell are you taking secret, naked photos of women?!” Detective Miller demanded, slamming his fist on the table. “It’s a strict requirement for my job.” The second the words left my mouth, Chloe lunged across the table and delivered a ringing, vicious slap across my face. “Shut up! Ryan, you are a monster! You took naked photos of me, and you have the audacity to sit here and claim it was for ‘work’?! What kind of sick ‘doctor’ needs to take filthy pictures like this?!” “You probably cataloged them so you could sell them on the dark web!” The slap caught me completely off guard. My ear was ringing. The officers snapped back to reality and quickly pulled Chloe away, but the looks they shot me were filled with undisguised revulsion. I struggled against the handcuffs, raising my voice. “I’m not lying! The people in those photos are—” Before I could finish, a massive commotion erupted out in the precinct hallway. The heavy door was violently shoved open, and a middle-aged couple stormed into the room. “It’s him! You animal! You took naked pictures of my daughter and posted them online! Now the whole world has seen her naked!” “How the hell is she supposed to find a decent husband now?! What kind of man is going to want her?!” “If you don’t go to prison today and pay us half a million dollars in emotional damages, we will literally destroy you!” Chloe’s mother jabbed her finger aggressively in my face, screaming at the top of her lungs, before lunging forward trying to claw at my clothes. Her father’s eyes were bloodshot, looking like he wanted to rip my throat out with his bare hands. “My daughter was going to marry into a rich family! You ruined her entire future! I’m going to kill you, you sick bastard!” If the officers hadn’t physically restrained them and pinned them against the wall, they would have ripped me to shreds. Chloe stood in the center of the room, crying hysterically, playing the perfect, tragic victim as she watched the cops shield me. “You’re protecting him?! Look at how many nudes are on his phone! How many innocent women has he victimized?! You need to investigate him!” “If he doesn’t go to prison today, I’m going to jump off the roof of this building to prove my innocence!” The hallway outside the interrogation room was packed with people they had dragged along to create a spectacle. Every single person glaring at me looked like they wanted me dead. Phone cameras were shoved aggressively toward my face. “That’s him! The pervert doctor! Does he have zero professional ethics?!” “The cops have literal undeniable proof and they still aren’t locking him up?! Did his rich daddy bribe the police department?!” “Scum like him deserve to die! Throw him in a cell and lose the key!” Seeing the situation rapidly spiraling into a full-blown riot, Detective Miller had no choice but to pull out his handcuffs to appease the mob. “Ryan Miller. You are under arrest on suspicion of invading a citizen’s privacy and distributing explicit materials. You are being detained.” Staring at the cold steel cuffs snapping shut around my wrists, I finally couldn’t hold it in and shouted: “I am not guilty!” “The people in those photos aren’t even alive!” 3 The moment those words echoed through the room, the interrogation room fell into an eerie, absolute silence. When Detective Miller finally processed what I had said, his face turned terrifyingly dark. “Ryan, this is a police precinct, not a joke. You’re not playing a game here.” “If you’re claiming the person on your operating table wasn’t a living patient, then what exactly were they?” Chloe’s mother snapped out of her shock and immediately started screaming again. “You have the nerve to say it wasn’t a person?! What, was there a ghost lying on the operating table?! You’re just spewing insane garbage to try and avoid prison!” “Officers, lock him up right now! He’s a pathological liar!” I took a deep breath, looked directly at Chloe, whose face was flushed and streaked with tears, and spoke calmly: “Chloe. Can you please show everyone the specific nude photo of you that you claim I leaked online?” A shocked murmur rippled through the crowd in the hallway. Chloe froze, then instantly shrieked in panic: “Why the hell should I show it to you again?! Looking at it makes me physically sick! I am not reliving that trauma for your amusement!” Her mother immediately backed her up: “Did you hear him, Detective?! He wants to force my traumatized daughter to look at those vile photos again! This is secondary trauma! What kind of sick game is he playing?!” I ignored them and looked steadily at Detective Miller. “The definitive proof is in the photos themselves. If you don’t believe me, pull them up on the monitor and compare them side-by-side.” Detective Miller hesitated for a few agonizing seconds, but finally gave the nod. The cyber tech quickly projected two photos onto the massive screen on the wall. On the left was the photo Chloe claimed was floating around the internet. On the right was a photo downloaded directly from the hidden album on my phone. I asked the tech to zoom in, inch by inch. Chloe’s voice cracked into a hysterical screech: “What are you doing, you freak?! Stop zooming in! I can’t take this, delete it right now!” The screen stopped zooming when it reached the very bottom edge of the photo. On the photo recovered from my phone, clearly visible on the skin, was a very distinct, stamped serial number. On Chloe’s photo, in the exact same spot, the skin was completely blank. I had the tech pull up dozens of other photos from my camera roll. Every single one of them had a unique serial number stamped in the exact same location. “What is this?” Detective Miller asked, utterly bewildered. “That is a unique identification code I physically stamp onto every single subject I photograph,” I explained smoothly. “Chloe’s photo doesn’t have it. Which means her photo was absolutely not taken by me.” “Furthermore, the demographic I photograph is extremely specific. She wouldn’t even qualify to be on my table.” Chloe froze, her mind racing, before she started screaming again: “You just slapped some fake numbers on those pictures yourself! You can type whatever you want on a photo, who’s going to stop you?! You expect a judge to accept that as evidence?!” Her mother chimed in, shouting: “Who the hell do you think you are?! You took dirty pictures, you own up to it! Now you’re trying to act like you’re some kind of ‘specialized professional’?” “If you’re photographing a ‘special demographic’, then spit it out! What kind of ‘special demographic’ was lying naked on your operating table?!” The mob outside the door joined in the aggressive chorus: “What a sick bastard! Trying to categorize his victims into ‘demographics’? Does he think he’s an artist or something?” “He’s just stalling because he ran out of lies! Serial numbers? Special demographics? It’s all absolute bullshit!” “ENOUGH! QUIET!” Detective Miller roared, silencing the chaotic room. He turned his piercing gaze back to me. “Ryan. You claim every photo has a serial number.” “I now have reasonable suspicion that you aren’t just a solo creep. You are part of an organized syndicate trafficking illegal, explicit imagery, likely tied to a massive underground pornographic network.” “You are going to take us to your ‘shooting location’ right now to collect evidence.” “If the evidence chain holds up, nobody, not even your rich daddy, is going to save you from federal prison.” 4 I nodded, my expression completely blank. In front of the entire outraged crowd, I was escorted out in handcuffs and shoved into the back of a squad car. The convoy of police cruisers pulled up to the main entrance of City General Hospital with sirens blaring, causing a massive scene. Several ER nurses poked their heads out the doors to see what was going on. One of them recognized me immediately and gasped: “Dr. Miller? Oh my god, what is happening?!” Chloe, trailing closely behind the detectives, shot me a look of pure, concentrated venom and muttered loud enough for everyone to hear: “A scumbag like this doesn’t deserve to be called a doctor.” Detective Miller shot her a warning glare, then turned to me. “Where is your department?” “Basement Level B1.” Detective Miller stopped walking and signaled to his tactical team. “Half of you, stick with me through the main lobby. The other half, secure the loading docks. He says his lab is on B1. There’s only one main exit from that level. Block it. He’s not running anywhere.” “Copy that!” I watched them act like they were breaching a terrorist stronghold and couldn’t help but let out a dry, exhausted chuckle. “It’s after hours. There’s nobody down there. You really don’t need the SWAT tactics.” Detective Miller gave me a freezing look. “Save it. Lead the way.” We rode the service elevator down, watching the floor numbers tick lower and lower. The doors opened to the freezing, dimly lit B1 level. I led them down the sterile hallway and stopped in front of a heavy, solid steel door. I pulled my ID badge out to scan the reader, but an officer immediately slammed his hand over the scanner, stopping me. “Hold on!” He turned to the rest of the squad. “Weapons drawn! If he has accomplices inside, be prepared to neutralize the threat!” Watching them gear up like they were preparing for a shootout, I actually found it incredibly amusing. Whatever they were expecting to find behind this door, they were going to be severely disappointed. The heavy steel door swung open. A blast of freezing, bone-chilling air rushed out into the hallway. The room was completely devoid of life. Laying in the center of the room, under blinding surgical lights, was an operating table. Laying on the table, covered entirely by a white surgical drape, was a naked woman. Her eyes were closed. And positioned perfectly beside the table was a professional 4K video camera on a tripod. “Holy shit! The camera is still recording—” One of the officers swore out loud, entirely breaking protocol. Detective Miller’s face turned lethal. He was the first one through the door, lunging forward and aggressively ripping the camera off the tripod to secure the evidence. The rest of the squad flooded the room, surrounding the woman on the table. Detective Miller approached the table cautiously. He reached out to gently shake the woman’s arm to wake her up. But the exact second his fingers made contact with her skin… He froze completely, paralyzed in sheer horror. “This… this is impossible…”
